Natalie Robyn, FIA’s first female chief executive, leaves post after 18 months | Formula One

Natalie Robyn is leaving Formula One’s governing body after serving just 18 months as its first chief executive, the FIA said on Wednesday. Robyn was one of the most senior female executives in motorsport and her arrival from the auto industry was hailed by the sport’s governing body, the FIA, as a “transformative moment” for an organisation led by Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, from the United Arab Emirates, highlighted Robyn’s appointment as proof of his commitment to equality and diversity after a controversy over remarks he had once made about women “who think they are smarter than men”. The governing body said Robyn had decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere and was leaving by mutual agreement at the end of May. “Performing in the role of CEO at the FIA has been an enormous privilege and I am grateful to have directed a programme of restructuring and reform,” she was quoted as saying. “Now is the time to step away in the knowledge that the organisation is better placed for the challenges which lie ahead.” …

If you don’t believe that how you stand and carry yourself is a critical component of your overall appeal, think again. While most potential dates won’t consciously evaluate your body language, how you communicate via your body is crucial. Perhaps nowhere is this more important than in their unconscious assessment of whether or not you have good posture. It’s not a detail they’re likely to comment on or discuss, but it colors how they and others perceive you. Are you a potential partner or “just a friend”? RELATED: 4 Big Mistakes …

A Permanent Elegy | Robyn Creswell

A Permanent Elegy | Robyn Creswell

In our February 22 issue, Robyn Creswell writes about one of the most fabled episodes in Arab history in his review of Eric Calderwood’s On Earth or in Poems: The Many Lives of al-Andalus. Al-Andalus and its period of convivencia (coexistence) have been cast by great Arab writers, intellectuals, and political actors in seemingly infinite ways since the eighth century, when the Umayyad ruler Abd al-Rahman conquered the Iberian Peninsula after narrowly escaping death in Damascus at the hands of the ascendant Abbasids. In constructing his new emirate, Creswell writes, Abd al-Rahman was so keen on duplicating the design of his lost home in the Levant that he built a south- rather than east-facing prayer niche in the great mosque at Córdoba, an epicenter of the Muslim world for centuries to come. “O people of al-Andalus,” the Valencian poet Ibn Khafaja wrote in the eleventh century, “How God showered you/with water, shade, rivers, and trees!/The Garden of Paradise is nowhere if not in your land.” Creswell teaches comparative literature at Yale, with a particular interest …

Reimagining al-Andalus | Robyn Creswell

Reimagining al-Andalus | Robyn Creswell

Jorge Luis Borges’s short story “Averroës’ Search” begins one afternoon in twelfth-century Andalusia, in the shady Cordovan home of Ibn Rushd, later known in Europe as Averroës. The philosopher is at an impasse in his commentary on Aristotle’s Poetics: two words, “tragedy” and “comedy,” are everywhere in the Greek but opaque to the Arab, who has no notion of dramaturgy. At a dinner party that evening, the subject of poetry comes up again: a guest argues that the Bedouin verse of pre-Islamic times, the foundation of Arabic literature, is obsolete for poets living in sophisticated cities like Córdoba. When the sixth-century poet Zuhayr compared destiny to a blind camel, the metaphor was arresting; now it seems absurd. The philosopher disagrees. He argues, in perfectly Aristotelian fashion, that poetry deals in universals: its purpose isn’t to amaze but to invent figures understandable by everyone. (Borges’s sly implication seems to be that the powerful yet clumsy camel, against whom all human struggle is doomed, points toward an Arabic translation of “tragedy,” even if Ibn Rushd doesn’t realize …
