Tories Criticised For Hypocrisy On Smoking Ban

Tories Criticised For Hypocrisy On Smoking Ban

The Tories have criticised Labour’s plan to ban smoking outside pubs just months after saying they wanted to make it completely illegal. The former prime minister’s decision to call an early election meant he ran out of time to turn the policy into law. Labour have said they will introduce the legislation themselves, and today it emerged that they want to go further by banning smoking in pub gardens, outdoor restaurants and outside sports stadiums and hospitals. The Conservatives posted on X that was “more evidence that Labour hates freedom”. “This isn’t about people’s health. It’s about control,” they added. But embarrassingly for the Tories, a community note was added to the post pointing out the party’s previous support for an outright smoking ban. Other users of the social media platform were also quick to highlight the Conservatives’ apparent hypocrisy. Source link

Rishi Sunak Dodges Questions About Tory Cabinet Election Bets

Rishi Sunak has failed to deny that cabinet members are among the Tories to place bets on the date of the election. Three Tories with close links to the prime minister, as well as one of his close protection officers, are being investigated over the allegations. The Conservatives have confirmed they “have been contacted have been contacted by the Gambling Commission about a small number of individuals”. That has led to speculation that more Tories may be caught up in the scandal. At the launch of the Tories’ Welsh manifesto today, Sunak repeatedly dodged questions about the affair. He was asked by a reporter from LBC: “Are you confident none of your cabinet members have also placed a bet?” The prime minister replied: “The first thing to say is I was incredibly angry when I learned about these allegations – the same anger that many of you will feel and everyone watching. “It’s right that they are investigated thoroughly, these are serious allegations. Right that they are being thoroughly investigated, as they are being. Independently, …

Tories Election Campaign Grows Desperate As July 4 Nears

With a little over two weeks until the general election, one thing is becoming more apparent every day. The opinion polls are not shifting and the level of panic in Tory headquarters is becoming more acute. The first signs of this came last week, when Grant Shapps raised the possibility of Labour winning a “super-majority”. Leaving aside the question of how that is different from a normal majority, the defence secretary appeared to be conceding that Keir Starmer is not on course to win, but to win big. The Tory campaign was no longer about trying to get Rishi Sunak re-elected prime minister, but about trying to limit the size of the seemingly inevitable Labour victory. Although the PM himself said all the right things about fighting for every vote, if anything, the Tory campaign has become even more desperate this week. Responding to yesterday’s launch of Reform UK’s election manifesto, a Conservative spokesperson warned that a vote for Nigel Farage’s party could put Labour in power for a “generation” – widely considered to be …
