Southern Baptists’ call for the US Supreme Court to overturn its same-sex marriage decision is part of a long history of opposing women’s and LGBTQ+ people’s rights

Southern Baptists’ call for the US Supreme Court to overturn its same-sex marriage decision is part of a long history of opposing women’s and LGBTQ+ people’s rights

(The Conversation) — The Southern Baptist Convention has lost 3.6 million members over the past two decades and faces an ongoing sexual abuse crisis. At its June 2025 annual meeting, however, neither of those issues took up as much time as controversial social issues, including the denomination’s stance on same-sex marriage. The group called for the overturning of Obergefell v. Hodges – the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage – and the creation of laws that “affirm marriage between one man and one woman.” Messengers – Southern Baptists’ word for delegates from local churches – also asked for laws that would “reflect the moral order revealed in Scripture and nature.” They also decried declining fertility rates, commercial surrogacy, Planned Parenthood, “willful childlessness,” the normalization of “transgender ideology,” and gender-affirming medical care. This detailed list targeting women’s and LGBTQ+ rights was justified by an appeal to a God-ordained created order, as defined by Southern Baptists’ interpretation of the Bible. In this created order, sex and gender are synonymous and are irrevocably defined by biology. The …

How to Advocate for Trans Rights in Your Community

How to Advocate for Trans Rights in Your Community

Transgender and gender-nonconforming people continue to fight for equal rights, despite persistent attacks from conservative lawmakers in the United States and abroad. While many members of the LGBTQ+ community might not feel safe at all, given recent events, trans women of color remain the most vulnerable to discrimination and violence. To help you better understand how to support members of your community, WIRED spoke with three advocacy groups that work to protect and empower trans people. Recognize the Humanity of Others If you’re a cisgender person (no, it’s not a slur), where can you start? It’s quite simple. “The most humane thing to do is to recognize our humanity. Some people are truly of the belief that we don’t deserve a place in the world,” says Tiommi Luckett, a senior national organizer for Positively Trans at the Transgender Law Center. “I think they need to see our humanity and recognize that we’re not asking for special rights.” Don’t assume you understand the nuances of a trans person’s lived experience based on preconceived ideas or someone …

Tanzanian lawmaker’s church shut down after he accuses government of human rights abuses

Tanzanian lawmaker’s church shut down after he accuses government of human rights abuses

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Tanzanian authorities deregistered a church owned by a ruling party lawmaker after he accused the government of human rights violations ahead of October elections. Parliament member Josephat Gwajima’s Glory of Christ church in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, was cordoned off by police Tuesday after hundreds of congregants turned up to protest the closure announcement. Tanzania’s registrar of societies wrote a letter deregistering Gwajima’s church, saying his sermons contravened acceptable conduct of religious organizations. Gwajima last Sunday called out the government for what he called detentions and enforced disappearances, warning his congregants to be wary. His message came days after a Kenyan activist and his Ugandan counterpart accused the Tanzanian police of torturing them after arresting them ahead of opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s treason case court proceedings. Tanzanians are set to elect a president and members of Parliament in October. The ruling party, the CCM, has been in power since Tanzania’s independence in 1961. The main opposition party, Chadema, has been calling for electoral reforms ahead of the elections. Gwajima …

How the Farm Industry Spied on Animal Rights Activists and Pushed the FBI to Treat Them as Bioterrorists

How the Farm Industry Spied on Animal Rights Activists and Pushed the FBI to Treat Them as Bioterrorists

Hundreds of emails and internal documents reviewed by WIRED reveal top lobbyists and representatives of America’s agricultural industry led a persistent and often covert campaign to surveil, discredit, and suppress animal rights organizations for nearly a decade, while relying on corporate spies to infiltrate meetings and functionally serve as an informant for the FBI. The documents, mostly obtained through public records requests by the nonprofit Property of the People, detail a secretive and long-running collaboration between the FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate (WMDD)—whose scope today includes Palestinian rights activists and the recent wave of arson targeting Teslas—and the Animal Agriculture Alliance (AAA), a nonprofit trade group representing the interests of US farmers, ranchers, veterinarians, and others across America’s food supply chain. Since at least 2018, documents show, the AAA has been supplying federal agents with intelligence on the activities of animal rights groups such as Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), with records of emails and meetings reflecting the industry’s broader mission to convince authorities that activists are the preeminent “bioterrorism” threat to the United States. …

No Man Is an Island: a British society and its historic push for gay rights | Pride

This creative documentary immerses us in a little-known chapter of gay history. In 1992, the Isle of Man was one of the last places in western Europe to decriminalise homosexual acts. Through verbatim reconstruction and newly discovered archives, we understand the impact of discriminatory parliamentary debates, controversial media coverage and overreaching police surveillance. In a short period of time, this corner of the British Isles went on to create some of the most progressive legislation in the world. Do people change, or do laws change people?  If you have been affected by the issues raised in this film, help and support is available. Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups tried to influence EU: Report – POLITICO

Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups tried to influence EU: Report – POLITICO

France has in recent days gone to great lengths to protect its secular nature. Earlier this week, France’s Europe Minister Benjamin Haddad called for tighter checks on the way the EU allocates grants following allegations that Brussels funded campaigns that did not respect the country’s secular values, and purportedly entities linked to Islamist movements. Early version leaked An early version of the report was leaked to the conservative daily Le Figaro and right-wing magazine Valeurs Actuelles, an act that one high-ranking member of government, who was granted anonymity to speak freely, attributed to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. Retailleau, who had access to the full report due to his role, told reporters earlier this week that the document would demonstrate how “Islamist infiltration is a …

How Macron is playing hardball as Starmer strives for EU reset – POLITICO

“We are working hand-in-hand with our European allies to build a safer, more secure, and more prosperous Europe,” Lammy said. But a lot can still go wrong, not least because Starmer is under increased pressure following big wins by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in local elections last week. Farage was one of the most vocal supporters of Brexit and is railing against any government attempt to push the U.K. back into the European fold. With uncertainty hovering over the future of the NATO alliance under Trump, and Washington threatening to walk away from difficult ceasefire negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, European officials want to land a security deal with the U.K., an allied nuclear power that has a seat on the United Nations Security Council.  The most recent of these was Wednesday’s gathering of EU foreign ministers in Poland attended by Foreign Secretary David Lammy. | Marcin Obara/EPA In Paris, however, the urgency to lock arms with the British is tempered by a desire to use the moment to address the bad blood left …

Trump team clashes with Berlin over AfD designation as right-wing extremist – POLITICO

“The West tore down the Berlin Wall together. And it has been rebuilt — not by the Soviets or the Russians, but by the German establishment,” Vance said in his post. The heavy criticism from top members of the U.S. administration comes days before a new coalition government, consisting of the center-right conservatives and the center-left Social Democratic Party, is set to take power in Berlin. One of the main challenges of incoming conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz will be to negotiate solutions to various challenges with U.S. President Donald Trump, including tariffs on the European Union — which threaten to hit the export-oriented German economy particularly hard — and the weakening of the transatlantic alliance on which Germany and Europe have long relied for their defense. But the latest rift seems to highlight a growing estrangement between the two governments. “You should reverse your course by hollowing out AND exploiting the rules based international order for the disadvantage of Ukraine and NATO,” Roderich Kiesewetter, a prominent lawmaker of Merz’s conservatives, wrote in a reaction to …

Introducing APA mini series: Professional Rights and Academic Freedom

Introducing APA mini series: Professional Rights and Academic Freedom

Welcome to the APA Mini-Series Blog organized by the APA Committee on Professional Rights and Academic Freedom, formerly, the Committee on the Professional Rights of Philosophers. We changed our name last year in order to highlight the centrality of Academic Freedom to our charge. Given recent events, it was not a moment too soon. In order to promote discussion of issues relating to professional rights and academic freedom, we have created this mini-series blog to provide a forum for philosophers to present their ideas on these topics. We welcome all contributions that provide insights and practical advice regarding the professional rights of philosophers and academic freedom in general. The following three inaugural posts to this mini-series were originally papers presented at the Eastern Division Meeting of the APA for a panel on “Issues in Faculty Speech: What Can Philosophy Contribute?” Our committee thought it would be useful to ask a group of panelists what, given our philosophical expertise, we can contribute to our understanding of questions about faculty speech, and, also how can the discipline of philosophy …
