The popular dancing competition celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, having run since 2004. It featured its first same-sex couple in 202, when former boxer Nicola Adams was paired with dancer Katya Jones. A number of same-sex pairings have been featured on the competition since, including last year’s runners-up, Celebrity Big Brother finalist Nikita Kuzmin and musical theatre star Layton Williams. But the 59-year-old, who is the only judge to have sat on the panel since its first series, thinks the development was introduced too late. “I think we did it one year too late,” he told the Radio Times. “I wish we’d been braver sooner, but we’re there now.” He commented on the prospect of backlash, adding: “Viewers are more open-minded than we give them credit for. Some people will …

We revel in the remoteness: wild camping and hiking in the Scottish Highlands | Highlands holidays

It’s a relief to lay my rucksack down, plunge hot feet into the cool stream and pause to revel in the fairytale surrounds. Foxgloves stand tall against a cornflower-blue sky, ferns look almost luminous, the water glints in the early summer sunshine. A patch of moss-covered ancient forest provides shade, a cuckoo calls in the distance, mountains layer on the horizon. Knoydart I’m in Knoydart in the Highlands of western Scotland, one of the last great wildernesses in the UK, on a hiking and wild camping adventure. No roads cross the 22,000-hectare (55,000-acres) peninsula, a rugged place where a trio of Munros soar skyward, sandwiched between sea lochs Nevis and Hourn (poetically translated as heaven and hell). Over five days our group of eight will explore this land on foot, carrying our sustenance and shelter on our backs, led by two guides from The Living Project, Josh and Emily. We give people the chance to challenge themselves, but focus on the journey and moving slowly through the landscape The rest of the world feels very …

Tokyo crowds revel as cherry blossoms reach full bloom

Tokyo crowds revel as cherry blossoms reach full bloom

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) declared on Thursday that the country’s most common and popular “somei yoshino” variety of cherry tree was in full bloom, four days later than average for the city. While the agency attributes this year’s tardy blooms to cold weather, it has raised the alarm that climate change is making the delicate petals appear sooner in the long term. Last year’s sakura began to flower on Mar 14 – the joint earliest date on record along with 2020 and 2021 – and hit full bloom on Mar 22. “Since 1953, the average start date for cherry blossoms to bloom in Japan has been becoming earlier at the rate of approximately 1.2 days per 10 years,” the JMA says. “The long-term increase in temperature is thought to be a factor” as well as other reasons such as the urban heat island effect, according to the agency. Tourism to Japan has been booming since pandemic-era border restrictions were lifted, and an international crowd was also out enjoying the scenery on Thursday. Kamilla Kielbowska, …

Uber and Revel partner up to offer EV drivers charging discounts

Uber and Revel partner up to offer EV drivers charging discounts

Uber Technologies and charging provider Revel have announced a new strategic partnership in which the rideshare network will financially support the latter in expanding its charging infrastructure in exchange for exclusive charging discounts for its drivers. The perks will start in New York City with plans to expand Revel chargers and discounts to other major cities across the US. Everyone already knows Uber, so we will start with a quick refresher course on Revel. The Brooklyn-based EV charging startup was founded in 2018 and is focused on all-electric taxi fleets and the charging infrastructure necessary to support them. The company is easily recognizable by its sky blue Tesla Model Ys and Kia Niro EVs driving around the Big Apple. In November 2022, Revel shared intentions to expand its network of fast chargers outside of New York City into other major metropolitan areas in the US. Today, the startup has announced a unique partnership with the biggest name in rideshares, Uber, to help expedite that process in exchange for charging support for its drivers. Source: Revel …

Mbappé leads PSG to nine-goal French Cup rout at sixth-tier amateurs Revel

Kylian Mbappé helped record 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain avoid an embarrassing slip-up with a 9-0 rout at sixth-tier amateurs Revel in the French Cup on Sunday. Issued on: 07/01/2024 – 22:57Modified: 07/01/2024 – 23:16 1 min Revel’s young supporters had implored Mbappé to make the trip to the game played at Castres – Revel’s humble stadium only has capacity for 2,000 fans in the Haute-Garonne south-western region – in a video posted on social media. And they got their wish with the 25-year-old star included in manager Luis Enrique’s strong travelling party to the leaders of Regional 1, five rungs below the capital giants in the French league ladder. Mbappé evidently enjoyed his night out in the town near Toulouse, scoring a hat-trick. Revel defender Maxence N’Guesson did get on the scoresheet but sadly for an own goal as the first half drew to a close.  US REVEL, an amateur team from the 6th tier, are 10 minutes away from taking on a PSG side including Kylian Mbappe. ???? Here’s how Revel players reacted to …

The United Autoworkers officially clinched tentative agreements with GM and Stellantis, officially ending a six-week strike that affected the Big Three U.S. automakers and sent nearly 50,000 workers to the picket lines. UAW reached a tentative deal with Ford on October 25. Days later, the UAW reached a tentative agreement with Stellantis, the automaker that owns Jeep, Ram and Chrysler. GM followed October 30. The result for the UAW can only be described as a triumph. Workers will see record pay raises, the return of cost-of-living adjustments and the end to a tiered wage system — to name just a few of the bigger concessions that automakers made. On top of that, UAW successfully pushed the automakers to make more …

Revel ends moped sharing, focuses on EV charging and ride-hail

Electric mobility startup Revel is officially shutting down its shared moped business in New York City and San Francisco, according to a company-wide email that CEO and co-founder Frank Reig sent Friday. TechCrunch has viewed the email. San Francisco and New York were Revel’s last two moped sharing markets. The company will now focus solely on its electric ride-hail and EV charging businesses. Earlier this week, Revel launched its third so-called “Superhub” in Queens after unveiling a second one in Brooklyn in April. A Revel spokesperson told TechCrunch the company also expects to break ground on a Bay Area charging station soon. Shuttering mopeds represents the end of an era for Revel — the Brooklyn-based company got its start as a small Bushwick storefront with 68 electric mopeds in 2018. By 2021, Revel had more than 3,000 e-mopeds in New York City and another 3,000 across Washington, D.C., Miami and San Francisco. That same year, Revel launched its first Superhub in Brooklyn, started an all-Tesla, all-employee ride-hailing service, and opened (and quietly shut down) an …

Revel, the car subscription startup from Spain, raises 3M to take its business up a gear

Revel, the car subscription startup from Spain, raises $123M to take its business up a gear

The market for car sales has been on rocky ground in the last several years as consumers, facing tougher economic conditions, get presented with an ever-larger range of alternatives, from ride-hailing apps and multimodal alternatives through to new propositions for private car use. Today, a startup out of Spain called Revel is announcing €115 million ($123 million) in funding to expand its business based around one of these models: a digital car “subscription” service, essentially a flexible lease agreement that includes insurance and maintenance, aimed at consumers willing typically to commit for at least a year. The funding is a combination of debt and equity: €100 million is structured financing earmarked to build out the car network, and €15 million is equity invested in the business itself. Investors include KKR, Santander Consumer Finance and others that are not being named. Enrique de Mateo, the CEO who co-founded the company with Daniel Marcos, declined to provide the company’s valuation. There have been plenty of startups that have tried to bring a technology spin to the leasing …
