Two women who met as teenagers, fell in love, and stayed together for 69 years – spending all but the last decade of their relationship in the closet. A woman who, in her 70s, finally decided to come out to two friendly lesbian strangers she saw together at the grocery store. One woman, born in 1918, who found herself in a lesbian bar one day, not knowing such a thing existed, and finally felt at home. These are all stories pulled from the Old Lesbian Oral Herstory Project (OLOHP), a catalogue of more than 900 interviews with lesbian seniors in the US. Arden Eversmeyer, a retired Houston schoolteacher who devoted her retired years to campaigning for visibility for older lesbians, who she felt were missing from the cultural discussion, began interviewing women in 1998. She grew a team of interviewers – all of them also old lesbians, as they call themselves – to travel around the country speaking to women. Today, it unveiled “Model Spec,” a framework document designed to shape the behavior of AI models used within the OpenAI application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT, and on which it is soliciting feedback from the public using a web form here, open till May 22. The Sun is ready for its close-up. Sunny Side Up The European Space Agency has released an incredible video of the Sun’s roiling surface, taken by its Solar Orbiter last year from a front-row vantage point. The dynamic video shows strands of energized particles leaving the star’s lower atmosphere in the form of “coronal rain,” with small eruptions of plasma dotting a fuzzy, “coronal moss” surface — a hellish perspective that required the daring orbiter to swoop by at an extremely close distance. Over Easy During its September 27 descent, the Solar Orbiter’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) recorded the Sun’s surface from a distance of roughly a third of the distance between the Earth and the Sun (which is just over 100 times the diameter of our planet and therefore appears much larger). The Orbiter used the opportunity to measure the solar winds emanating from the Sun, which would flow past NASA’s Parker Solar Probe shortly after, allowing scientists at the two agencies to compare notes.
