Why a Bit of Restraint Can Do You a Lot of Good

The Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor has described our times as the “Age of Authenticity,” meaning an era when people are willing to publicize their secrets and indulge their urges, even if such a drive for personal truth involves transgressing traditional boundaries of self-control. Once, this type of exhibitionism was the preserve of a few celebrities, but now anybody can get in on the act: The quest for authenticity has spawned salacious memoirs, reality-TV shows of escalating disinhibition, and cathartic self-disclosure on social media. Such revelations are supposed to be good for us, because suppressing our thoughts and desires is considered unhealthy and unnatural. In psychology, this way of thinking is sometimes called self-determination theory, according to which we are happiest when we obey our inner drives. I would grant that living inauthentically and being repressed do not sound like a recipe for well-being. But the age of authenticity does not seem to have made us …

‘Outdated and offensive’: police in England and Wales barred from blaming restraint deaths on ‘excited delirium’ | Police

The police watchdog for England and Wales has removed a controversial medical term from its incident forms after claims it plays into racist stereotypes and detracts attention from police brutality. Until now, police forces referring a death or serious incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been given the option to tick “excited delirium” in a list of relevant factors. The term has historically been used to describe people who are agitated or acting bizarrely, usually because of mental illness, drug use or both. Symptoms are said to include insensitivity to pain, aggression, increased strength and elevated heart rate. But it is not a recognised medical condition, is rooted in pseudoscience and has been criticised for playing into racial tropes about superhuman strength, which campaigners say can lead to increased use of police force. In 2021, excited delirium was mentioned in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former US police officer found guilty of the murder of George Floyd. Police officers discussed whether Floyd might have excited delirium as they restrained him. …

Strikes on Iran: Can one demand ‘restraint’ while funding Israel? | Israel War on Gaza

Early on Friday, Iran activated its air defence systems after reports of explosions in Isfahan province. According to Iranian state media, three small drones were shot down over the city of Isfahan. And while no one has officially claimed responsibility for the aerial attack and the Iranian government has not assigned blame, it is not difficult to hazard a guess as to its origins, given Iran’s recent launching of hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel. This, mind you, took place purely in retaliation for the lethal April 1 Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. United States media outlets have reported confirmation from anonymous US officials that Israel was indeed the source of the latest attacks. For his part, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani – chairman of this week’s G7 meeting in Capri, Italy – has asserted that the US informed its Group of Seven partners that it had received a “last minute” warning from Israel re: impending drone action in Iran. The action took place amid ubiquitous global calls for “restraint” …

World leaders urge restraint after suspected Israeli strikes on Iran

World leaders urge restraint after suspected Israeli strikes on Iran

Gaza’s health ministry collects data from the enclave’s hospitals and the Palestinian Red Crescent. The health ministry does not report how Palestinians were killed, whether from Israeli airstrikes and artillery barrages or errant Palestinian rocket fire. It describes all casualties as victims of “Israeli aggression”. The ministry also does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.  Throughout four wars and numerous skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, UN agencies have cited the Hamas-run health ministry’s death tolls in regular reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and Palestinian Red Crescent also use the numbers. In the aftermath of war, the UN humanitarian office has published final death tolls based on its own research into medical records. The UN’s counts have largely been consistent with the Gaza health ministry’s, with small discrepancies.  For more on the Gaza health ministry’s tolls, click here. (FRANCE 24 with AP)  Source link

Israel’s war cabinet is locked between restraint and revenge

Israel’s war cabinet is locked between restraint and revenge

Vowing retribution but urged to show restraint, Israel has yet to agree on its response to an expansive drone and missile strike carried out on its territories by Iran on Saturday. A Monday meeting of Israel’s five-person war cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, concluded without comment on whether the Jewish state will honor its pledge to “exact a price” from Tehran or concede to calls for a measured response from international leaders. The prolonged deliberation came after the Israeli military said that Iran on Saturday fired more than 300 drones and missiles at its soil. It claimed that it and international allies eliminated 99% of these attacks as part of its now-dubbed “Iron Shield” operation. The U.S., U.K., France and Jordan assisted in intercepting these threats. Tehran said its assault was in response to an Israeli strike that killed several top commanders at an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1 — an offensive for which Israel has yet to claim responsibility. Iran said the Saturday hostilities have “concluded” its retaliation — and Israel …

Israel Weighs Response to Iran’s Attack as Allies Push for Restraint

“Together with our partners, we defeated that attack,” Mr. Biden said in his first public appearance since the strikes, speaking from the Oval Office where he was hosting Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani of Iraq. “The United States is committed to Israel’s security,” he added, and was continuing to work toward a deal that would halt the war in Gaza, free the hostages there and prevent “the conflict from spreading beyond what it already has.” Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman, noted on Monday that Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken had spoken to officials in Britain, Egypt, Germany, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in an effort to ease tensions. “We continue to make clear to everyone that we talk to that we want to see de-escalation, that we don’t want to see this conflict further escalated,” Mr. Miller told reporters in Washington. “We don’t want to see a wider regional war.” Still, he added, “Israel is a sovereign country. They have to make their own decisions about how best to defend themselves.” As Israel …

Israeli Forces Vow Response to Iran’s Attack Despite Calls for Restraint

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israelis awaited word on how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would respond to Iran’s first-ever direct attack as international pressure for restraint grew amid fears of an escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Netanyahu on Monday summoned his war cabinet for the second time in less than 24 hours to weigh a response to Iran’s massive weekend missile and drone attack, a government source said. While the attack caused no deaths and little damage, thanks the air defences and countermeasures of Israel and its allies, it has increased concerns that violence rooted in the Gaza war is spreading, and fears of open war between the long-time foes. War in Israel and Gaza Israeli military chief of staff Herzi Halevi said on Monday that “this launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response” but gave no details. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani told state TV on Monday night that Tehran’s response to any Israeli retaliation would come in “a matter of …

Britain’s Leaders Condemn Iran’s Attacks but Urge Israel to Show Restraint

Britain’s Leaders Condemn Iran’s Attacks but Urge Israel to Show Restraint

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain on Monday combined a strong condemnation of Iran’s weekend attack on Israel with a call for restraint from “all sides,” adding that he was working with allies to lower tensions in the region. Speaking to the British Parliament, Mr. Sunak described Iran’s assault as a “reckless and dangerous escalation,” confirmed that British planes had destroyed an undisclosed number of Iranian drones, and said that — faced with such threats — “Israel has our full support.” But in a finely calibrated set of comments to lawmakers, Mr. Sunak also said that “all sides must show restraint.” He said he plans to speak soon by phone with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, and added: “We are working urgently with our allies to de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed. We want to see calmer heads prevail.” British condemnation of Iran was clear. Mr. Sunak said the government in Tehran was “intent on sowing chaos” in the region, and had shown its “true colors.” But in a two-hour question and answer session, …

Sunak to tell Netanyahu to ‘show restraint’ in first direct phone call

Good evening. Rishi Sunak will tell Benjamin Netanyahu to “show restraint” in his first direct phone call with the Israeli prime minister since the Iran attack. Elsewhere, the Duke of Sussex has lost his initial bid to appeal against a High Court ruling dismissing his challenge over a decision to change the level of his personal security when he visits the UK, a judicial spokesman has said. Sunak to tell Netanyahu to ‘show restraint’ in first direct phone call Mr Sunak told Parliament he would call Mr Netanyahu to urge caution as Israel considers its retaliation options. The Israeli prime minister is locked in talks with his war cabinet over how to respond to Iran’s first ever direct attack on Israel.
