Latest Israel-Hamas war news: Gantz poised to resign amid lack of plan

Opposition leader Benny Gantz appears poised to follow through with his threat to resign from Israel’s war cabinet if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t put forward a comprehensive postwar plan by Saturday. Such a plan was nowhere in sight on Friday evening as Netanyahu continued to distance himself from a cease-fire deal presented by President Biden last week as an Israeli proposal. Gantz is set to give remarks to the media Saturday evening after the end of Shabbat, according to a statement from his office. Israel’s Channel 12 news network reported that a meeting this week between Gantz and Netanyahu seeking to bring the pair to a consensus was unproductive. Gantz — one of three voting members of the war cabinet led by Netanyahu — gave the prime minister the ultimatum last month, urging him to develop a plan to find an alternative government for the Gaza Strip and facilitate the return of the dozens of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas there. “The choice is in your hands,” he said at the time, addressing …

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, Won’t Resign Over Wife’s Corruption Case

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, Won’t Resign Over Wife’s Corruption Case

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain declared on Monday that he would not resign, nearly a week after publicly raising the possibility in response to corruption accusations against his wife that he and other officials denounced as a smear campaign. The decision by Mr. Sánchez, who has repeatedly astonished his supporters and frustrated his conservative critics with his knack for political survival, is a momentous one for him, his country and all of Europe. Mr. Sánchez inspired anxiety, bewilderment and right-wing hopes last week when he responded to the opening of a judicial investigation into his wife by canceling his public schedule and issuing an emotional public letter. He wrote that harassment against his family had become intolerable and that he was considering quitting. But on Monday, he walked back from the precipice after days of apparent reflection out of the public eye. Spain’s public prosecutor’s office had already sought to have the complaint against his wife dismissed for lack of evidence. “I’ve decided to continue with more strength,” Mr. Sánchez said in a defiant …

Spain’s Pedro Sánchez to stay in power after threatening to resign

Spain’s Pedro Sánchez to stay in power after threatening to resign

For the past five days, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, one of the continent’s most influential liberal voices, had his nation gripped by a question: Would he, or wouldn’t he, resign? The bizarre political drama seemed straight out of a telenovela: After the opening of what he called a spurious investigation against his wife, the dashing leader invoked familial honor in an emotive letter that meme-makers quickly set to song on social media, and in which he wondered whether it was “worth it” to continue in his post. As he “reflected,” leaving the country in suspense and blaming his political enemies for mudslinging that had brought him to the brink of resignation, thousands rallied on the streets to show their support. He finally announced his decision after a portent-filled meeting with King Felipe VI. The climax was ultimately anticlimactic: He said he would stay. In a national address, the 52-year old from the center-left Socialist party, used the moment to reflect on a political reality that is today the norm far beyond Spain. Americans in …

Humza Yousaf set to resign today

Humza Yousaf set to resign today

It is worth remembering the perilous situation Humza Yousaf is currently facing at Holyrood.  A motion of no confidence in Mr Yousaf, tabled by the Scottish Tories, is the most immediate threat to his future. The result of that vote currently rests on a knife-edge.  The Tories, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Scottish Greens are all backing the motion, amounting to 64 MSPs in total.  The SNP has 63 MSPs which means Mr Yousaf would need to secure the backing of Ash Regan, the Alba Party’s sole MSP, in order to tie the vote.  The Presiding Office at Holyrood would then have the casting vote and would be duty bound to vote for the status quo, allowing Mr Yousaf to survive. Ms Regan is yet to declare how she will vote.  A vote of no confidence in the whole Scottish Government, tabled by Labour, is harder to predict because the Scottish Greens have not yet said how they would vote.  Source link

Humza Yousaf LIVE: SNP MSP confirms rumours of pending resignation | Politics | News

SNP MSP Michelle Thompson has confirmed they are hearing the rumours of Mr Yousaf’s pending resignation. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Ms Thompson said: “I’m hearing the same rumours and I think we’re all waiting to see what the actual position is”. “I guess the rumours suggest that something is afoot, but I honestly can’t clarify because I’ve had no update nor, as I understand have my MSP group, so I guess we’ll all hear definitively one way or another this morning.” Ms Thompson backed Mr Yousaf’s leadership rival Kate Forbes in last year’s SNP race. Ms Forbes is thought to be a potential successor to Mr Yousaf, after missing out on the top job by just 2,100 votes. SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn is also hyped as a potential successor. Will Spain’s prime minister resign? – POLITICO

Sánchez has spent the past five days secluded, meditating on his future. Supporters and opponents alike now await a decision that has the potential to radically alter Spain’s political landscape and significantly impact the distribution of the EU’s top jobs after June’s European Parliament election. ¡Quédate, Pedro! Sánchez’s announcement last Wednesday was motivated by news that a Madrid judge had launched a preliminary corruption and influence-peddling investigation focused on Begoña Gómez, the prime minister’s wife. The probe was initiated in response to a lawsuit filed by Manos Limpias — or “Clean Hands” — a group with links to the far right that regularly uses the courts to target people or groups linked to progressive causes. The suit appears to be baseless: Prosecutors last week recommended the criminal complaint be dismissed, and even Manos Limpias admits its suit may be based on “fake news.” But the judiciary’s decision to launch the preliminary investigation into Gómez despite the flimsiness of the evidence against her appears to have been too much for Sánchez. Sánchez’s exit would also likely have …

IDF chief set to resign in bombshell move as Gaza war drags on | World | News

The IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi will resign “in the coming period,” according to Israeli broadcaster Channel 12. The bombshell resignation is part of a purge of all officers seen as responsible for failing to stop the October 7 attacks last year. Earlier this week, the country’s head of military intelligence Major General Aharon Haliva announced his shock resignation. He was the first senior figure to step down over the attack, which was the deadliest in Israel’s history Israeli military and intelligence officials missed or ignored multiple warnings before hundreds of Hamas gunmen breached the Gaza border fence and attacked nearby Israeli communities, military bases and a music festival. Maj. Gen. Haliva is the first in a series of military commanders who “will be forced to retire in the near future”. Several other officers, including the Head of the Shin Bet domestic security agency Ronen Bar, are also expected to leave. Even Maj. Gen. Haliva’s expected successors – Major General Yaron Finkelman and Major General Eliezer Toledano – “are now perceived as part of …

Humza Yousaf Wont Resign As Scottish First Minister

Humza Yousaf Wont Resign As Scottish First Minister

Humza Yousaf has insisted he won’t resign as Scotland’s first minister despite facing two votes of confidence next week. The SNP leader said he was “getting on with the day job” as his political career teeters on the brink. His leadership was plunged into crisis yesterday after he ended the SNP’s tie-up with the Green Party at the Scottish Parliament. The Greens said they would support a motion of no confidence in Yousaf tabled by Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar also announced today that he will table a separate motion of no confidence in Yousaf’s government – a move that could trigger a snap election. That has left the first minister relying on the backing of Ash Regan – who defected from the SNP to the Alba Party last year – to save his job. Asked by Sky News if he was going to resign, Yousaf said: “No, I intend absolutely to fight that vote of no confidence and I’m getting on with the day job.” Yousaf also rejected the …

Humza Yousaf ‘considering whether to resign’ ahead of knife-edge confidence vote | Politics | News

Humza Yousaf is considering whether to resign before losing next week’s crunch confidence vote, it has been reported. Mr Yousaf’s future as First Minister of Scotland now hangs in the balance, with 64 MSPs from the Tories, Labour, Greens and LibDems pledging to vote against him continuing in office. With just 63 SNP MSPs, the future of Nicola Sturgeon’s successor now rests on the vote on Alba MSP Ash Reagan, whom Mr Yousaf insulted as “no great loss” when she defected from the SNP last October. With the vote set to be a knife-edge result, it’s now been claimed that Mr Yousaf is considering whether to jump before he’s pushed from the top job in Scottish politics. A former ally and supporter of Mr Yousaf has told The Times: “He’s done. Whether it’s today, tomorrow or later than that, he’s done”. Meanwhile STV has also reported that the SNP chief is “considering his position” A spokesperson for Mr Yousaf has ruled out that he could resign as soon as today, with the First Minister still …
