Episcopal Divinity School launches public online course equipping Christians to shift public theological narrative around reproductive justice

[January 21, 2025 – Online] — With the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the resulting elimination of legal access to abortion in 25 states and counting, Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) is offering a public, non-credit, six-week online course to equip people of faith with the education and practical tools needed to shift the theological narrative around this pressing issue. The course, The Sacred Work of Reproductive Justice, will be taught by the Rev. Dr. Rebecca Todd Peters, a renowned feminist social ethicist and advocate for reproductive justice, and will run from February 4 to March 11, 2025. As Christians lead the current rush to criminalize abortion, this course will reframe the issue as one of reproductive justice—a framework developed by Black women activists in 1994—and explore the church’s responsibility in changing the public narrative about abortion in the country. Why Take This Course? Most liberal Protestant denominations—including Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Unitarian Universalist, and Episcopalian—have official positions in support of reproductive rights. Yet, these perspectives are often unheard, considered taboo, or held privately—leaving the theological …

The Download: AI vs quantum, and the future of reproductive rights in the US

The Download: AI vs quantum, and the future of reproductive rights in the US

Tech companies have been funneling billions of dollars into quantum computers for years. The hope is that they’ll be a game changer for fields as diverse as finance, drug discovery, and logistics. But while the field struggles with the realities of tricky quantum hardware, another challenger is making headway in some of these most promising use cases. AI is now being applied to fundamental physics, chemistry, and materials science in a way that suggests quantum computing’s purported home turf might not be so safe after all. Read the full story. —Edd Gent What’s next for reproductive rights in the US This week, it wasn’t just the future president of the US that was on the ballot. Ten states also voted on abortion rights. Two years ago, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a legal decision that protected the right to abortion. Since then, abortion bans have been enacted in multiple states, and millions of people in the US have lost access to local clinics. Now, some states are voting to extend and protect …

What’s next for reproductive rights in the US

Two years ago, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a legal decision that protected the right to abortion. Since then, abortion bans have been enacted in multiple states, and millions of people in the US have lost access to local clinics. Now, some states are voting to extend and protect access to abortion. This week, seven states voted in support of such measures. And voters in Missouri, a state that has long restricted access, have voted to overturn its ban. It’s not all good news for proponents of reproductive rights—some states voted against abortion access. And questions remain over the impact of a second term under former president Donald Trump, who is set to return to the post in January. Roe v. Wade, the legal decision that enshrined a constitutional right to abortion in the US in 1973, guaranteed the right to an abortion up to the point of fetal viability, which is generally considered to be around 24 weeks of pregnancy. It was overturned by the US Supreme Court in the summer …

Project 2025 Upends Reproductive Freedoms

Project 2025 Upends Reproductive Freedoms

By now, you’ve heard a lot from the American Humanist Association (and others!) about Project 2025 and many of the dangerous plans that the Christian Nationalist right have published to upend democracy. From calling for fascist immigration policies that would rip our neighbors from their homes, to dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, to greenlighting the further decimation of the environment, the plan is unquestionably dangerous and aims to marginalize huge portions of the population. When it comes to reproductive freedom, abortion access, and the concept of family, Project 2025’s goals are inherently racist, fascist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic. Controlling reproduction is about much more than stripping away access to an inherent right such as abortion. It’s fundamentally about controlling the population in service of white supremacist aims. It’s about enforcing cis-hetero-patriarchy by determining what constitutes a family and what does not, who has the right to reproduce and who does not, and ensuring that marriage is between cisgender straight men and women only. It’s a full-scale attempt to roll back our freedoms and force …

Project 2025 Decimates Reproductive Rights

Project 2025 Decimates Reproductive Rights

Project 2025 is predicated on a belief that U.S. laws, government, and policy should be informed by a Christian Nationalist lens and its views of morality. The Christian Nationalist movement behind Project 2025 wants to completely eradicate reproductive and abortion rights in the U.S., going so far as to include measures to create access barriers to abortion, control how we discuss reproductive health, and much more. Project 2025 doesn’t just attempt to end reproductive rights – its aim is to censor and hinder discussion of reproductive rights within our federal government and erase language used to describe reproductive rights. The next conservative President…starts with deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender-sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term…out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists (Page 4-5). Project 2025 lays out a plan to upend the Department of Health and Human Services and re-cast it as the “Department of Life” …

Crucial topics are missing from teens’ education on sex and reproductive health in England

Crucial topics are missing from teens’ education on sex and reproductive health in England

Comprehensive sex and reproductive health education aims to promote positive attitudes toward sex and reproductive health, and empower young people to make informed decisions. But decent sex and reproductive health education is still lacking in many parts of the world. This leaves significant gaps in young peoples’ knowledge and understanding. We have carried out research to figure out what young people in England are missing in their sex education lessons. We reviewed the relationships and sex education (RSE) curricula across the UK. We found that, in England, much of the focus of sex and reproductive health education is on pregnancy prevention. Much less emphasis is given to reproductive health topics such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, fertility and the menopause. We also carried out a survey of 931 students aged 16-18 across England. We found students were missing key aspects of reproductive health knowledge. Students are not being adequately informed about fertility, despite the RSE curriculum guidelines stating that students must be taught “the facts about reproductive health, including fertility, and the potential impact …

Adam Scott Joins Kamala Harris Reproductive Freedom Bus Tour in Michigan

Adam Scott Joins Kamala Harris Reproductive Freedom Bus Tour in Michigan

Adam Scott has a busy Monday planned in a battleground state. The Severance star has booked back-to-back events in Michigan in support the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, the campaign confirmed. Per intel, he will appear in Ann Arbor as part of the Fighting for Reproductive Freedom Bus Tour during an event with the state’s Lieutenant Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II to address supporters and volunteers on the University of Michigan campus. Scott will then segue to headlining a student organizing event off-campus. The bus tour, which kicked off in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 3, has been cruising through key states like Michigan, where stops include Madison Heights, Flint, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Marquette. According to the Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign, each stop will “emphasize the stark contrast between Vice President Harris and Gov.Walz, who will restore the protections of Roe v. Wade when Congress passes a bill to do so, and Donald Trump and JD Vance, who will enact their dangerous Project 2025 agenda to ban abortion nationwide, restrict …

Frozen in Time: the motherhood dilemma for single women in China | Reproductive rights

Fertility tourism is booming for single Chinese women with hopes of future motherhood. China’s birthrate is at a record low, yet unmarried women are not legally allowed to freeze their eggs there. We meet Lei and Abu, as they travel to the US for the procedure, battling self-doubt and scepticism along the way. What does this mean for womanhood and parenting in modern China? Source link

The climate crisis is a sexual health and reproductive rights emergency

The climate crisis is a sexual health and reproductive rights emergency

In the wake of Earth Day, West Africa is facing a historic and deadly heatwave, last month was the tenth hottest month in a row in the U.S., and Americans and people across the globe are already bracing for what scientists are predicting will be yet another record-breaking summer with more extreme heat and weather events in store. Those of us paying attention know it to be true: the climate crisis is here. Climate change is perhaps the defining crisis of our time and our rapidly changing climate will undoubtedly affect every aspect of human life – including people’s sexual and reproductive health. Women and girls disproportionately bear the brunt of climate-related events and environmental stress – women comprise 20 million of the 26 million people estimated to have been displaced already by climate change. As the climate crisis ravages our world, many have ignored the detrimental impact it has on women’s lives, their access to health care and their agency to create the families and futures of their choosing. But we can no longer …

Reproductive Rights on Trial with Skye Perryman

Reproductive Rights on Trial with Skye Perryman

In the coming days, the United States Supreme Court will hear a case on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) – a federal law that guarantees all people treatment for emergency medical conditions. However, anti-abortion extremists are trying to exclude pregnant people from EMTALA’s long-standing protections. This has the potential to not only drastically impact access to life-saving reproductive care, but also religious freedom. The same goes for the recent SCOTUS oral arguments on access to mifepristone, the leading medical pregnancy termination drug. And of course, we’re fast approaching the 2nd anniversary of the Dobbs decision, reversing Roe v. Wade. Infringing on people’s rights to make personal decisions based on their own moral beliefs is one way that religious extremists are seeking to chip away at our democracy and impose their Christian nationalist agenda. One way to push back is to stand together for the values most Americans actually hold. This week on The State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush speaks with Skye Perryman of …
