Edgbaston Cricket Ground set for major hotel and stand redevelopment

Edgbaston Stadium has received a major funding boost from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in its bid to develop an on-site hotel and new spectator stand.  A loan facility of up to £18 million pounds has been approved by WMCA which will cover a substantial part of the Club’s plans to re-develop the Raglan and Priory stands alongside a new 4-star hotel.    It paves the way for Edgbaston to work with other partners to secure remaining funding with a view for construction to begin – subject to planning approval – in September 2025.  Detailed consultation with stakeholders, including residents and Warwickshire Members, will take place over the next six months ahead of a proposed planning application being submitted in the autumn.  If granted, the project is expected to be finished by Spring 2027 with the hotel opening in time for that year’s men’s Ashes Test Match against Australia.  The proposed hotel will include a rooftop terrace, pitch-view rooms with balconies, and other rooms that can be converted into hospitality boxes with small external terraces …

Plans Lodged for Cheltenham Town Centre redevelopment site

Plans Lodged for Cheltenham Town Centre redevelopment site

Wavensmere Homes and BBS Capital have submitted a full planning application to Cheltenham Borough Council for the redevelopment of the North Place surface car park, located within the town’s Central Conservation Area. 153 houses and apartments are proposed for Arkle Court, which will sensitively enhance the street scene alongside the Grade II* listed St Margaret’s Terrace. Designed by architects Glancy Nicholls, Arkle Court reflects the significant opportunity for exemplary placemaking. The proposals are for the 75 three-bedroom three-storey townhouses, and the four-storey building containing 78 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Extending to over 3-acres, the plans to redevelop the site include multiple areas of landscaped open space. Ben Clarke, Technical Director of Wavensmere Homes, said: “Following consultation with local people, stakeholders and the planning department, we are very pleased to have now lodged this significant planning application, which would transform an unattractive blot on Cheltenham’s townscape. Arkle Court is designed to complement the range of quality restaurants and shops at The Brewery Quarter and will continue the renaissance of the St Paul’s area, which features a …

Singapore waiting for Malaysia’s reply on proposal to buy land for Woodlands Checkpoint redevelopment

Singapore waiting for Malaysia’s reply on proposal to buy land for Woodlands Checkpoint redevelopment

SINGAPORE: Singapore is awaiting Malaysia’s response regarding the purchase of two plots of land that would help facilitate the redevelopment of Woodlands Checkpoint. In a response to CNA’s queries, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Thursday (Feb 22) that the Federal Lands Commissioner of Malaysia owns two “small plots” of land near Woodlands Checkpoint. “These plots, currently unused, sit in the middle of the area which will constitute the to-be redeveloped Woodlands Checkpoint,” said ICA. “Without them, we would not be able to optimise the Checkpoint’s redevelopment, which we are undertaking in order to enhance the immigration clearance experience for Singapore and Malaysia travellers using the Causeway.” ICA said that Singapore had written to Malaysia in May 2022 and more recently in November 2023 to propose the purchase of the land. The matter was also raised at a meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia in July 2023 and the 10th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat in October 2023, during which both sides had committed to improving the traffic situation at the Causeway crossing, said ICA. “We are …

218-year-old library above Manchester pub prepares for £7m redevelopment | Libraries

218-year-old library above Manchester pub prepares for £7m redevelopment | Libraries

It is arguably one of the most overlooked, least-known establishments in Manchester: an atmospheric 218-year-old library on top of a city centre pub in a building that resembles an ancient Greek temple. To find the Portico library people have to know where they are going. The entrance is not the building’s main one and visitors have to trudge up several flights of stairs, but once they get there, what a sight: it is a book-lined step back in history where you can almost hear the echoes of 19th-century Manchester radicals debating Corn Laws. Big things are being planned for the “hidden gem”. “We hate the side entrance, we hate the buzzer, we hate the stairs, we want to change all that,” said librarian Thom Keep. Portico library has secured £453,964 in national lottery money to develop a £7m plan that will transform the library. The ambitious plan includes creating dining and exhibition areas, opening a “northern bookshop”, expanding educational activities, creating a new collections care lab and creating event and meeting spaces. Librarian Thom Keep …

Tie-break looms for Wimbledon plans with councils split on redevelopment | Wimbledon

“To use a tennis analogy, we’re at one set all but we’ve got a long way to go,” says Christopher Coombe, a member of Save Wimbledon Park, as he reflects on the latest plot twist in the fight between local residents and the world’s biggest tennis tournament. “This is a five-set match with no tie-break.” Coombe is speaking the morning after Wandsworth council unanimously rejected the All England Club’s plans to build 39 grass courts, including an 8,000-seat stadium, on the Grade II-listed Wimbledon golf club site. But last month Merton council, which has an equal say in the decision, approved the same controversial plans by 6-4. Hence the impasse – and the sense of battle lines being redrawn on the streets of Wimbledon and Southfields. We won’t have long to wait for the next development. On Wednesday the London mayor’s office confirmed it will decide in the next fortnight whether to kill the plans entirely or call them in for review. That decision now rests with the deputy mayor for planning, Jules Pipe, after …
