Films with long sex scenes and nudity may no longer be rated 12 | UK News

Films with long sex scenes and nudity may no longer be rated 12 | UK News

Stricter guidelines for the classification of 12A or 12 rated films are to be introduced, amid concerns about the levels of sex or nudity in some movies. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) also said a higher rating may be required for bad language with sexual or misogynistic connotations. However, the organisation said it would take a “less restrictive” approach to depictions of cannabis use in the future – while maintaining its current standards on other drugs. It comes after research carried out by the BBFC found people were concerned by the “level of sexual detail, nudity and the duration of the sex scenes” in films rated 12A/12 by its previous 2019 guidelines. The organisation – responsible for classifying cinema releases, hard-copy versions of films and TV programmes, as well as shows on Netflix in the UK – said it would now take a more “cautious” approach in the future. “Similar content is now more likely to be rated 15,” the BBFC said. “However, the research also indicates that audiences are happy for classification …

I take several meanings from this quote. It highlights the human tendency to focus on solving “important,” big-picture problems while neglecting the small, repetitive, day-to-day tasks that still need to get done in the meantime. (See also: Katrine Marçal’s book, Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner?, about how Smith indulged in economic navel-gazing while letting his mommy cook his meals and ignoring the vital role of unpaid female labor in propping up men’s fortunes.) It also acknowledges the human …

More than half of hospitals in England rated substandard by health regulator | Hospitals

More than half of all hospitals in England and over two-thirds of those in London offer substandard care, an Observer investigation has found. In one hospital emergency department, inspectors reported patients being treated in corridors and deadly diseases such as sepsis and cancer not being diagnosed. The Observer analysed the ratings by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors of 254 general hospitals – excluding those that provide single services or specialised care. Seven were rated as “inadequate” and 122 as “requires improvement” – 51% of the total. The situation was significantly worse in London. Of 37 hospitals in the capital, 25 (68%) were rated as substandard. One of those was Hillingdon hospital. CQC inspectors found that the hospital “did not always have enough staff to care for patients and keep them safe”, left “telephone calls unanswered” and demonstrated “no evidence of learning lessons from incidents among frontline staffoutside the ward from where the incident occurred”. A spokesperson for the hospital’s NHS trust said it had taken immediate action to address the areas for improvement identified in …

‘A little bit of the hay barn on the nose’: British ciders tasted and rated | Cider

Silly Moo, Sussex, Unfiltered 4.2%, £2.50 (330ml), trenchmore.co.uk The nose is orange juicy. It’s admirably medium dry; nice bit of tannic structure. Would be really nice with cheese. This is a cleverly made cider. A good start.★★★★ Sandford Orchards, Devon, Devon Red 4.5%, £2.50 (500ml), sandfordorchards.co.uk Crystal clear, a beautiful brightness. We’ve got a little bit of the hay barn on the nose. Light fruitiness, softer than the nose suggests. Light and lean.★★★ Kentish Pip, Kent, Craftsman 4.8%, £24 (12 x 330ml), kentishpip.co.uk It’s fresh, citrussy, almost stone-fruity. Really inviting. It smells like it’s going to have some acidity, which it does – zing, zing, zing! Really light, really poised and nicely balanced. A real thirst quencher.★★★★ Ascension Cider, Kent, Pilot 4.8%, £3 (330ml), ascensioncider.co.uk A considerable haze. A little elderflower and lychee on the nose. Quite juicy, like juice has been added back to it; quite fleshy and textural. Clean, fresh. I’d love the acidity to be a tad higher to balance the sweetness and luscious body.★★★ Aipple, Fife, Medium Dry 5.4%, £4.50 (440ml), …

Sex Rated review – Rylan’s erotic chatshow could be retitled This Is Your (Sex) Life | Television & radio

Sex on television is no longer confined to late nights or the higher numbers of your on-screen TV guide. Recently, Amanda Holden has offered up “A Bonkers History” of sex; Sex Education returns to Netflix for one final rub of the sex-genie’s lamp; and on Channel 4, you may have been watching a group of liberated types getting together en masse in a lovely country mansion in The Great Sex Experiment. Shoving its way into this crowded bed is Sex Rated, in which people rate their own sexual abilities, before their exes come along to agree or disagree. It’s hosted by Rylan, very much not in his Radio 2 show mode, and “Shagony Aunt” Ruby Rare, a sex educator who adds a touch of common sense to proceedings. A contestant, or participant, fills in a lengthy sex survey, then sits on the sofa with Rylan to discuss their own likes, preferences and skills. Next, two or three of their exes drop by, and reveal how they have rated that person in the same departments. You …

Crisis in NHS maternity units revealed as 21 rated ‘substandard’ | Care Quality Commission (CQC)

Nearly half of all NHS hospital maternity services covered so far by a national inspection programme have been rated as substandard, the Observer can reveal. The Care Quality Commission (CQC), which regulates health and care providers in England, began its maternity inspection programme last August after the Ockenden review into the Shropshire maternity scandal, which saw 300 babies left dead or brain damaged by inadequate NHS care. An Observer analysis of the CQC inspection shows that 45 maternity services have so far been given a rating under the new inspection programme, with six declared inadequate and another 15 rated as “requires improvement”. Twenty-three have been rated as good and just one as outstanding, with four improving. Of the services inspected under the programme, which focuses on safety and leadership, about two-thirds have been found to have insufficient staffing, including some services that were rated as good overall. Eleven services saw their rating fall from their previous inspection. Dr Suzanne Tyler of the Royal College of Midwives said: “Report after report has made a direct connection …
