Brazil v Argentina: 2026 World Cup qualifying – live | Football

Key events Show key events only Please turn on JavaScript to use this feature Preamble Welcome to a crucial World Cup qualifier between first-place Argentina and fifth-place Brazil, where … … wait … do the standings matter? CONMEBOL, the South American federation, has the simplest and fairest qualification system. No comparisons of runners-up across disparate groups. No draw that creates a “Group of Death.” No “playoff to get into the group stage that determines who goes to the playoff.” Ten teams. Double round-robin. That’s it. It’s a fair format. It’s also quite forgiving. So Brazil are currently in fifth place, looking up not only at eternal rival Argentina and historically accomplished countries such as Uruguay and Colombia but also at Venezuela. If not for a three-point penalty to Ecuador, Brazil would be trailing them, too. And they would still be on course to qualify for the next World Cup, which will include a mind-boggling 48 teams. Even if things were truly horrific, Brazil would have nearly two years to fix the problem(s). The last games …

Euro 2024: Hungary book place with late leveller, Sweden humbled by Azerbaijan | Euro 2024 qualifying

Hungary qualified for the Euro 2024 finals with a game to spare after a last-minute Alex Petkov own goal earned them a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria in Sofia. In a game played behind closed doors due to a late venue change, Hungary took the lead through Martin Adam’s header following a free-kick from Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, after 10 minutes. Bulgaria, bottom of Group G and without a victory in qualifying, levelled when Spas Delev fired into the top right corner in the 24th minute. Valentin Antov and Ilia Gruev were sent off for the hosts before half-time, but VAR intervened to overturn Gruev’s red card as the half ended level. It was a Hungary player who saw red early in the second half when Milos Kerkez was sent off to cancel out the visitors’ numerical advantage. Marco Rossi’s side then suffered a major setback in the 78th minute as Kiril Despodov scored a penalty to put Bulgaria 2-1 ahead after Attila Szalai’s foul. As Hungary’s first defeat in a year loomed Petkov headed into his …
