Apple Watch AFib History Feature Qualified by FDA to Evaluate Medical Devices

Apple’s atrial fibrillation (AFib) history feature on Apple Watch has been qualified by the FDA under its Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program, the first digital health technology feature of its kind to do so. Since 2022, Apple Watch has supported AFib History, which allows users diagnosed with atrial fibrillation to view an estimate of how frequently their heart is in this type of irregular rhythm. The feature analyzes pulse rate data collected by a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor to identify episodes consistent with AFib and provides the user with a retrospective estimate of AFib burden (a measure of the amount of time spent in AFib during past Apple Watch wear). Apple says the feature is intended for individuals aged 22 years or older who have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The AFib History feature received FDA clearance in the United States just prior to its announcement by Apple, after being validated in a clinical study. The MDDT program under which the feature was approved today is the FDA’s method of qualifying tools that medical device …

RFK Jr. says he’s qualified for California presidential ballot

RFK Jr. says he’s qualified for California presidential ballot

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday that he has qualified for California’s presidential election ballot, giving his candidacy a long-shot chance at collecting 54 electoral votes this fall. If his spot on the ballot is certified by the California secretary of state, which could happen in August, Kennedy would represent the American Independent Party. The secretary of state’s office confirmed to The Times that Kennedy’s candidacy had been submitted by the party. The party has a controversial history dating to 1968, when it nominated Alabama Gov. George Wallace as its candidate for president. He ran opposing desegregation and other federal civil rights laws in championing states’ rights. Kennedy’s father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, a Democrat from New York, was assassinated in Los Angeles the night he won that year’s California presidential primary. Kennedy says he has qualified for the ballot in California, Hawaii, Michigan and Utah. He has been investing heavily and, though running as an independent, is seeking alternative paths to the ballot since he opted out of running in the Democratic primary late …

Church leaders in Kenya give qualified support for plan to close orphanages

NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS) — Amid a growing push among child welfare organizations to reunite families rather than keep children in institutional homes, Kenyan authorities are set to adopt a new national program that will phase out traditional orphanages over the next decade. Church leaders in the country, whose denominations run hundreds of orphanages, have expressed support for the plan, saying children’s homes have exposed children to abuse. Other faith leaders back private institutional operators in opposing the change. Roman Catholic Bishop Willybard Kitogho Lagho of Malindi said the Catholic Church supports the government plan because many of the institutions are no longer safe for children.  “There have been a lot of abuses in these homes,” said the bishop. “Children have been sexually, physical and emotionally abused. There have also been cases of child trafficking.” Some orphanages, he alleged, were founded by “unscrupulous people who want to gain from donor funding.” The treatment of orphans in Africa has come under fire in recent years as recent studies have shown that as many as half of children …

From tears to joy: How Singapore rower Saiyidah Aisyah qualified for the Paris Olympics at 36

From tears to joy: How Singapore rower Saiyidah Aisyah qualified for the Paris Olympics at 36

Eight years ago in Chungju, Aisyah missed out on making the A final at the qualifier, but went on to win the B final and qualify for Rio. “In 2016, that was one of the best races I’ve ever done, and this was totally at the other extreme end,” she said. What the Singaporean did not realise was that current qualification rules bumped her Japanese competitor who finished second in the event, out of qualification contention. This was because Japan had also won the men’s and women’s double sculls events at the continental qualifier, automatically taking up the country’s Olympic spots. “I know the Japanese girl and it’s hard for me to accept it as an athlete. I totally feel her,” said Aisyah. “But I also think I need to learn to embrace the fact that I chose to do this. I got to the A final and this is how the game is being played.” “IT’S OKAY BEING 36” Aisyah has a number of SEA Games medals to her name, and made headlines in 2013, …

National World still ‘best qualified’ to own The Telegraph, David Montgomery claims

National World still ‘best qualified’ to own The Telegraph, David Montgomery claims

David Montgomery, director of National World. Picture: Reuters National World chairman David Montgomery has claimed the publisher remains the “best qualified” candidate to buy Telegraph Media Group. Montgomery revealed in a statement accompanying the publisher’s full-year results on Thursday that National World remains in the running as the UAE-linked Redbird IMI acquisition led by former CNN boss Jeff Zucker looks to be in doubt. The Government is introducing legislation to ban foreign states from owning UK newspapers and current affairs magazines. Meanwhile, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has said she is “minded to” refer Redbird IMI’s takeover to an in-depth investigation after Ofcom found the deal may “operate against the public interest” as majority investor International Media Investments (IMI), owned by UAE vice president Sheikh Mansour, “may have the incentive to influence TMG in a way that could potentially act against the public interest in the UK by influencing the accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion in the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph newspapers”. Montgomery and National World wanted to take part …

AI Hiring Tools Are Ignoring Qualified Candidates, Expert Says

AI Hiring Tools Are Ignoring Qualified Candidates, Expert Says

Turns out bots are actually bad hiring managers. Bad Tech Companies are increasingly employing artificial intelligence tools to screen potential employees with the aim of streamlining the process and to eliminate any biases. But as the BBC reports, the tools may well be making the hiring process worse by screening out highly-qualified people. In one instance that exemplifies the problem, a job applicant to a tutoring company called Fullmind, resubmitted a resume after getting rejected, but tweaked their birthday to appear younger, the BBC reports. This small change led to an interview, because the AI software the company used automatically rejected older applicants. The company had to settle with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on age discrimination charges as a result. In another incident, an AI tool gave a poor evaluation to a makeup artist based on her body language even though she was scored as highly skilled in her craft, according to the BBC. These kind of recruiting resources faceplants are likely to multiply as more businesses adopt these tools for the hiring process. …
