Paris mayor faces pushback over plans for car-free Eiffel Tower zone

Removing cars from an expanse around the Eiffel Tower to create a green pathway sounds pretty good on paper, but the mayor of Paris is struggling to win over residents and above all the police force to revamp one of the city’s most celebrated views. Issued on: 10/02/2024 – 08:26 3 min Thousands of tourists jostle every day to snap the Eiffel Tower from across the River Seine on the hill at Trocadero, with its magnificent gardens and a modernist palace housing museums. Walking to Trocadero is less romantic, however, requiring the crossing of two major intersections and the often traffic-clogged Pont d’Iena bridge. Mayor Anne Hidalgo said to general surprise this week that she wants to push ahead with a project to kick out the cars and create a continuous garden between the Eiffel Tower and the Trocadero esplanade. Anne Hidalgo Promises That ‘Cars Will Not Return To the Eiffel Tower’ After The Olympics “The Trocadéro will be greened and the Pont d’Iéna pedestrianized, up to the Champ de Mars, which will be reforested. …

Unions plan pushback on proposed driverless taxi expansion in L.A.

Unions plan pushback on proposed driverless taxi expansion in L.A.

Some labor unions, including the Teamsters, plan to push back against a plan by the self-driving car company Waymo to expand its autonomous car service in California.  The Teamsters and three other labor organizations are planning a rally Friday on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall to call for stricter regulation of driverless cars, which they say threaten the jobs of people who drive for a living. The Teamsters say they want autonomous car services to have backup human drivers, and they’re supporting a bill in the California Legislature that would grant cities and counties the authority to regulate or block services such as Waymo’s.  Waymo, which operates fleets of autonomous cars for hire in San Francisco and Phoenix, announced plans last month to expand to two additional swaths of California: parts of greater Los Angeles and suburban towns south of San Francisco. The company, which spun off from Google in 2016, said it has more than 50,000 people on its Los Angeles waitlist for free test rides.  The service is similar to the …

WTA facing pushback on mulled Finals move to Saudi

WTA facing pushback on mulled Finals move to Saudi

MELBOURNE : Little more than two years after the WTA was lauded by human rights advocates for suspending its tournaments in China, the women’s tour risks angering those same activists as it mulls moving its season-ending Finals to Saudi Arabia. Speculation about the event heading to the Gulf country has intensified and there has already been significant pushback from within the game, most notably from tennis greats Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in sports like soccer, Formula One and golf over the last few years even as critics accuse the kingdom of using its Public Investment Fund to “sportswash” its human rights record. “The human rights risks in Saudi Arabia to players, fans, and journalists are very serious,” Minky Worden of Human Rights Watch told Reuters from New York. “Sports such as tennis have only been allowed in the kingdom since 2018 for women and girls. Until that time, women and girls were not welcome in the stadium even to watch sports.” Saudi Arabia denies accusations of human rights abuses …

‘Bait and switch’: Why Kenya’s no-visa policy is drawing pushback | Tourism

‘Bait and switch’: Why Kenya’s no-visa policy is drawing pushback | Tourism

Nairobi, Kenya – In September, Thomas Danso entered Kenya to attend the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi by using only his Ghanaian passport and a yellow fever certificate. He did not need a visa. But by January when the 34-year-old, who works as a project manager for an international nonprofit in Accra, returned for a three-day workshop, that had changed. Ghanaian citizens, one of 51 nationalities that previously needed no visa to get into Kenya, now have to pay $34, submit flight and lodging bookings, then wait for 72 hours to get Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Only members of the East African Community (EAC) are exempt from the new visa regime, introduced this year. “We all seek a borderless Africa, but … [this] is an inconvenience for those who want to travel on emergency,” Danso told Al Jazeera. In December, Kenyan President William Ruto announced a new visa regime in which no one from across the world would require a visa to enter the country. His argument for scrapping visas to Kenya, a hub for …

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the 43-year-old supermodel shared insights into the challenges and learning curves of raising her two children, son Benjamin, 14, and daughter Vivian, 11, during this transitional period. Gisele highlighted that her children’s upbringing is quite different from her own, and she’s determined to equip them with essential life skills.  “The way you make your room, the way you organize and make your bed is the way you’re going to do your life,” she told her kids, emphasizing the importance of discipline and organization.  Gisele and Tom sit with Jack, Benjamin and Vivian Brady However, she admits, “Sometimes I get pushback, especially because now they’re in two different homes and there are two different ways. But I feel like I owe it to my kids, because of what my mom taught me.” The supermodel’s approach reflects her efforts to instill …

Vatican says no heresy in allowing blessings for same-sex couples after pushback by some bishops

Vatican says no heresy in allowing blessings for same-sex couples after pushback by some bishops

ROME (AP) — After pushback by some bishops in Africa, Poland and elsewhere, the Vatican on Thursday defended the recent move by Pope Francis to allow blessings for same-sex couples, insisting there is nothing “heretical” involved. In a five-page statement, the Holy See’s office to safeguard doctrinal orthodoxy expressed understanding that some bishops’ conferences need more time for “pastoral reflection” on the pontiff’s formal approval for such blessings. But “there is no room to distance ourselves doctrinally” from the Declaration about the blessings “or to consider it heretical, contrary to the Tradition of the Church or blasphemous,” said the statement by the office, formally called the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The new rule of blessings came last month in the form of a declaration, an important Catholic church document. Some bishops immediately said they wouldn’t implement the new policy. “Prudence and attention to the ecclesial context and to the local culture could allow for different methods of application” of the new blessings rule, “but not a total or definitive denial of this …

Russia-Ukraine war live: Ukrainian ‘pushback’ along 3-8km front at occupied Kherson | Ukraine

Key events Show key events only Please turn on JavaScript to use this feature Summary Hello and welcome to the Guardian’s live coverage of the Russian war against Ukraine. First things first, here in brief are some of the main developments: Ukraine’s military has described as “fairly fluid” the situation on the Russian-held side of the Dnipro River at Kherson. It comes after Russia admitted for the first time that Ukrainian troops have been able to cross over to the left (eastern) bank and establish themselves. Natalia Humeniuk from the Ukrainian southern command said: “The pushback from our side is taking place on a line from three to eight kilometres along the entire bank from the water’s edge. For now, we will ask for informational silence … which would allow us to report later on great successes.” Ukrainian military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko told media outlet RBK Ukraine that the growing area of contested control on the eastern bank “significantly reduces the mobility and capability of the Russian occupiers”. A report in the Wall Street Journal …

Robotaxi pushback grows in Los Angeles as Cruise loses permits

Robotaxi pushback grows in Los Angeles as Cruise loses permits

Less than a month after Waymo’s Los Angeles County expansion, labor organizers and an LA lawmaker are calling for new autonomous-vehicle regulations. On Tuesday, the office of LA Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez said he will introduce a motion “urging officials in the state to address public safety concerns around autonomous vehicles and reign in the expansion of robotaxis in Los Angeles.” The office cited both Waymo and Cruise in the statement, which went out shortly after California’s DMV yanked Cruise’s robotaxi permits. The motion would have LA City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto join San Francisco’s existing robotaxi lawsuit against the California Public Utilities Commission. The CPUC is just one of the regulatory bodies overseeing the rollout of autonomous vehicles in California. Councilmember Soto-Martínez represents LA’s 13th district, which includes Silverlake, Atwater Village, Little Armenia and Little Bangladesh. The lawmaker’s office said he will introduce the motion at Wednesday’s city council meeting, following a press conference with Teamsters leader Chris Griswold. Last week, LA Councilmember Traci Park introduced a motion calling for reports on the city’s ability to …

India pushes ahead with data privacy bill despite pushback from critics

India pushes ahead with data privacy bill despite pushback from critics

India’s lower house of parliament greenlit the revised data privacy legislation presented the previous week, even as the bill has received criticism, with many believing that it grants significant discretionary authority to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, which was reintroduced in the lower house last week (nearly a year after abrupt withdrawal of a previous proposal last), makes companies collecting user data mandatory to obtain explicit user consent before processing it. However, it includes “certain legitimate uses” as an exemption for data collection without user consent. It lets platforms process personal user data without the consent of their users when it is provided voluntarily in certain situations, such as sharing payment receipts with users or offering public services. The bill allows the Indian government to waive compliance requirements for certain data fiduciaries, such as startups, if necessary. The bill also empowers the government to establish a data protection board and appoint all its members, including the chairperson. Additionally, the data privacy bill protects the Indian government and its established data …
