Eye Movement Therapies, Purple Hats, and the Sagan Standard

Eye Movement Therapies, Purple Hats, and the Sagan Standard

Editor’s note: Gerald Rosen and Gerald Davison coined the term purple hat therapy as a metaphor for treatment packages such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) that combine essential elements (cognitive and behavioral techniques) and nonessential elements (eye movements). Wikipedia now has a page dedicated to this concept. In the 1980s, several novel psychotherapeutic techniques were proposed for the rapid cure of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). At the forefront of these “power therapies” was Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a method developed by Francine Shapiro (1948–2019) and still commonly used today. Shapiro reported a 100 percent success rate treating trauma memories with multi-saccadic eye movements, and she assured clinicians who read her report that they could use eye movements to “achieve complete desensitization of 75–80% of any individually treated trauma-related memory in a single 50-minute session” (Shapiro 1989, 221). Shapiro then offered workshops that introduced her treatment to thousands of clinicians. Over time, EMDR came to enjoy the sun of scientific endorsement. We offer a less than sanguine view of EMDR, believing that …

Madonna’s Son David Poses at Prince’s Paisley Park Studio in an Epic Purple Suit

David Banda rocked a floral purple suit — complete with ruffled sleeves! — at Prince‘s iconic Paisley Park studio. All that was missing was a little red Corvette. Madonna‘s 18-year-old son had a pinch-me moment when he recently paid a visit to Prince’s iconic Paisley Park studio. David posted a carousal post showing him sitting in front of the recording studio’s control room. He looked contemplative while sitting in front of the control room where the late Prince recorded a number of his iconic albums. In the second photo, David’s carries a white electric guitar while he walks onstage. At one point, David gets down on his knees and raises his guitar in true rock star fashion. In his caption, David wrote, “One of the best experiences on this tour. Having the chance to sit in Prince’s studio and play on his stage. A true dream come true.” Madonna, who shares David with ex husband Guy Ritchie, recently paid tribute to her son with a sweet post in September. “Happy 18th Birthday David Banda! Tribal …

How did a GMO purple tomato get mixed up for an organic variety? : Shots

How did a GMO purple tomato get mixed up for an organic variety? : Shots

The Purple Galaxy Tomato splashed across the cover of this season’s Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds catalog: a closeup of a blackish-purple tomato speckled with tiny pink dots. Next to it, sits a sliced open fruit, revealing deep fuchsia seeds and flesh. “This beauty is believed to be the first — and the purplest — non-GMO purple tomato in the universe!” read the catalog copy. Only problem? The seeds actually may have been a GMO variety, the recently released Purple Tomato, created using genes from a snapdragon flower by Norfolk Healthy Produce. The mix-up has caused consternation for the heirloom seed company that prides itself on offering rare and organic varieties and takes a firm stance against GMO crops. And it’s triggered debate about biodiversity and what can happen with GMO seeds when they begin to spread. When news of a non-GMO purple-fleshed tomato variety first started circulating on social media last fall, some scientists and tomato enthusiasts weren’t so sure. “I had discussions with colleagues about it, and all of us just looked at it …

Alien planets might teem with purple — yes, purple — life

Alien planets might teem with purple — yes, purple — life

NASA has already spotted a diversity of rocky, Earth-like worlds in the cosmos. But unlike our verdant planet, many of these worlds may flourish with purple life — if life exists out there, that is. It’s easy to imagine organisms elsewhere resembling the colors of trees, algae, grasses, and beyond that dominate our Earthly reality. This green life soaks up certain light waves from the sun to fuel energy-creating photosynthesis, and the green-pigmented compound chlorophyll helps drive this profoundly successful process. New research from astrobiologists and microbiologists, however, suggests life elsewhere may likely make energy with different types of light from the sun, and use compounds with purple pigments rather than green. It’s not a far-fetched idea. After all, some microbes on Earth are purple. It’s just that on Earth, in our now oxygen-rich environment, green life (using “oxygenic photosynthesis”) has prevailed in most ecosystems. “But that doesn’t have to be the case on other planets,” Lígia Fonseca Coelho, a microbiologist at Cornell University’s Carl Sagan Institute who led the research, told Mashable. The Duchess of Edinburgh switched up her usual sophisticated style for a playful sartorial ensemble on Easter Sunday, stepping out with the Duke of Edinburgh at the Easter Matins service held at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.  Duchess Sophie, 59, looked divine in a deep purple cropped coat dress adorned with gold buttons. She slipped into towering cream heels and displayed her penchant for marvellous millinery with a cream beret perched atop her blonde waves.  The mother-of-two also carried a deep purple clutch bag rendered from a croc-style material. Google Messages Now Lets You Turn Blue Chat Bubbles Green (or Orange or Purple)

Google Messages Now Lets You Turn Blue Chat Bubbles Green (or Orange or Purple)

Google Messages is getting an update — this time with some pizzazz. Google is testing the addition of color and background customization for the RCS messaging app on Android phones. Still in beta, the options will allow you to set custom backgrounds and chat bubble colors. The default theme follows Android’s Material You color schemes based on your device’s wallpaper, but it appears you’ll be able to change it if you prefer, as reported earlier by Android Police. The color options are rolling out to users who have opted in to beta test the app, a Google spokesperson said in a statement last week. They’ll be available more broadly in the “near future.” Google’s RCS, an iMessage-like standard, allows you to send higher-quality images via messaging and also use encryption. The effort has become so popular that even Apple has said it plans to bring RCS support to the iPhone this year. It’s unclear whether that will calm the green bubble debate, but this latest update means you’ll now be able to turn your iPhone-using friends’ chat bubbles green (or blue) on your …

Nigel Slater’s recipe for purple sprouting broccoli on bruschetta | Food

Nigel Slater’s recipe for purple sprouting broccoli on bruschetta | Food

Toast 4 slices of thick sourdough bread on both sides. Scatter a handful of flaked almonds into a shallow pan then toast lightly over a moderate heat until crisp and pale gold in colour. Bring 750ml of good vegetable or chicken stock to the boil in a deep, medium-sized saucepan. Finely grate the zest from a small lemon and a small blood orange then halve and squeeze both. Remove the toughest of the stems from about 250g of purple sprouting broccoli, leaving the more tender ones in place. Plunge into the hot stock and boil for 3-4 minutes till tender. Put the toast into a couple of shallow bowls. Trickle enough olive oil over the toast to moisten it generously. Lift the purple sprouting broccoli from the hot stock with kitchen tongs or a draining spoon and pile on top of the sourdough toasts. Season the stock with half of the lemon and orange zests and some salt and black pepper. Mix together the orange and lemon juices and add enough to the hot stock to give it a refreshing citrus …
