UK media gender pay gap down and women in top roles up

Picture: Pixabay Three-quarters of the UK’s biggest media organisations increased the percentage of women in their top teams in the past year. Of 34 media organisations big enough to be required to report gender pay data to the Government, 26 (or 76%) increased the proportion of women in their top pay quarter between 2022 and 2023. As of the latest snapshot date of 5 April 2023, there were more men than women within the top 25% paid employees at 79% of the companies in our analysis. This is down from 91% a year earlier. Bloomberg (21.7% women), Sun publisher News Group Newspapers (27.5%) and Mirror Group Newspapers (28%) are at the bottom of the table for percentage of women in their top pay band. Two publishers have 50/50 balance in their top teams: Scottish broadcaster STV Television and Newsquest Community Media, the arm of Newsquest that used to be Archant before its 2022 acquisition. Shelley, who has worked at PA Media for 25 years, is the first woman to lead the 155-year-old news business. The publisher described Shelley’s appointment as a “powerful reflection of PA’s record for retaining staff and progressingcareers”. Shelley said: “When I joined PA as a grad trainee in 1999, I knew this was an organisation where I could build my career. Kensington Palace photo of Kate and her children issued on 10 March 2024 Five international news agencies have removed a photo issued by Kensington Palace of Kate, Princess of Wales, and her children over accusations it had been “manipulated”. Kate has since apologised, saying in a statement: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.” The handout image, which was also shared by Kensington Palace on social media, has been widely used by news media. PA Media forced to negotiate with NUJ by arbitration body

The Central Arbitration Committee (CAC), an independent body with statutory powers, said management at PA should sit down with the National Union of Journalists chapel to work out the scope of a potential collective bargaining unit. It decided that “on the balance of probabilities” a majority of those in the proposed bargaining unit would be likely to support recognition of the NUJ, which has had a chapel at PA since 2021, to negotiate on their behalf. The NUJ described the ruling as a “significant step forward” in their work towards staff having a “real say” on fairer pay and conditions.
