Alaska Native leaders call to preserve Denali name for Mount McKinley

Alaska Native leaders call to preserve Denali name for Mount McKinley

(RNS) — In his second inauguration address on Monday (Jan. 20), President Donald Trump repeated his customary campaign speech promises to improve the United States’ credibility around the world, but after one such vow the president surprised some by announcing America’s resurgence would entail new names for some familiar geographical features. “A short time from now we are going to be changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said, “and we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs.” A few hours later he signed an executive order doing just that. Alaska Native leaders, as well as state politicians, object that the order undoes years of work with the federal government to establish Denali as the rightful name. “Located on the traditional homelands of the Dene peoples, it reflects a profound spiritual and cultural relationship with the land,” said Emily Edenshaw, president and CEO of the Alaska Native Heritage Center. “Keeping this name honors that connection and recognizes …

Historians seek to preserve Gaza’s cultural heritage in Geneva

It’s been more than 400 days since Israel launched its offensive on Gaza. The ongoing war has been denounced as a “genocide” of Palestinians last week by Amnesty International, which urges the global community to act. On top of the bombings of buildings and crucial infrastructure, the Strip’s rich cultural heritage is also being destroyed. As of November 29th, UNESCO has identified 75 historic, cultural and archaeological sites that had been damaged, including cemeteries and museums. FRANCE 24 met with the people striving to preserve what’s left of Gaza’s cultural heritage. Elena Volochine and Guliver Cragg report.      Source link

California acts to preserve records detailing underground puppy market

California acts to preserve records detailing underground puppy market

California has stopped destroying records that contain key details about the state’s underground puppy market after a Times investigation found that some unscrupulous resellers import hundreds of dogs from the Midwest with little oversight. Karen Ross, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, confirmed that the records the agency receives are now being preserved, but offered few other details about how the state will use them. “We have no staff that’s dedicated to this, so we’re a little bit hamstrung right now, but it’s not because we don’t want to be a part of the solution,” she said in a brief interview this week. In California, all dogs brought into the state for resale require a certificate issued by a federally accredited veterinarian listing the animal’s origin, destination and verification they are healthy to travel. The agriculture agency has long received those health certificates from other states by mistake — the records are supposed to go to county public health departments — and, in recent years, made it a practice to immediately scrap …

Buckingham Palace accused of ‘shading’ Meghan Markle with ‘strawberry preserve’ ad

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more As the Duchess of Sussex gears up to launch her forthcoming lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, a slew of her celebrity friends have already gushed over her strawberry jam. However, it seems that Buckingham Palace is now being accused of “shading” Meghan Markle after sharing a video of its very own strawberry preserve. “Our Strawberry Preserve is made using only the finest berries and is delicious served in a variety of ways,” the official Instagram account for Buckingham Palace Shop captioned a post on 24 April – the same day that model Chrissy Teigen posted a rave review of American Riviera Orchard’s jam. In the video, the royal gift shop showed four ways to use its strawberry preserve: on a scone as part of a cream tea, on a crumpet, with a croissant, or spread on toast. “How do you enjoy …

Chipotle Tells Workers To “Preserve” Chicken Supply As Demand Soars

Chipotle Tells Workers To “Preserve” Chicken Supply As Demand Soars

A surge in restaurant traffic boosted Chipotle Mexican Grill’s first-quarter earnings and revenue, topping the average estimate of Wall Street analysts tracked by Bloomberg on Wednesday. Shares are higher by more than 5% in the cash session on Thursday. However, this note will not expand on earnings. Instead, we will focus on a letter from the company to employees stating: Stop eating chicken during lunch and dinner meals because soaring demand has collided with dwindling poultry supply—and the need to preserve supply urgently.  Bloomberg obtained the letter Chief Restaurant Officer Scott Boatwright sent employees last week. He told them: “Due to its sustained strong sales we need your help to keep up with our guests’ demand for this popular protein option.”  Boatwright told store managers and hot-side and cold-side kitchen employees not to order chicken or chicken al pastor with their free or discounted employee meals. Even white-collar Chipotle workers were told not to order chicken.  The message read, “Let’s Conserve Our Fan-Favorite Chicken.” Execs did not give a timeline for boosting the chicken supply. The letter aimed to “preserve our …

‘People would never forget these shoes’: the fight to preserve soles of Stutthof Nazi camp | Nazism

At the foot of a pine tree, Grzegorz Kwiatkowski bent to touch the black, moist shapes nestling amid the fungi and leaf mulch. “I’ve been monitoring this area now since 2015, and always hope I won’t stumble upon anything any more and that one day the entire area will have been cleared,” he said. This, however, was not that day. The 39-year-old poet, scholar and rock musician was walking in the forest just metres from the perimeter fence of what was once the Stutthof Nazi concentration camp in the German-annexed territory of Poland, and is now a memorial site in Sztutowo, a village 24 miles (38km) east of Gdańsk on the Baltic coast. Grzegorz Kwiatkowski has been dealing with the topic of memory of Holocaust victims for many years, especially the fate of Jews in Gdańsk and Pomerania. Library of Congress to preserve songs by Juan Gabriel and Hector Lavoe

Library of Congress to preserve songs by Juan Gabriel and Hector Lavoe

Juan Gabriel’s “Amor Eterno” and Héctor Lavoe’s “El Cantante” will be safeguarded for posterity, the Library of Congress announced Tuesday. The two tracks are among the 25 “audio treasures” selected for induction into the National Recording Registry based on their “importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.” Established in 2000, the registry is a collection of 650 audio recordings preserved by the Library of Congress that are deemed to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Among these year’s picks are Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Blondie’s “Parallel Lines” and Green Day’s “Dookie.” For “Amor Eterno” and “El Cantante,” their cultural importance to Latinx communities stretches back decades. Gabriel, the iconic Mexican singer-songwriter who died in 2016 at age 66, released “Amor Eterno” in 1990 as a tribute to his late mother. Since then, the mariachi ballad has become a symbol of grief and everlasting love for those who have passed away. In 2019, “Amor Eterno” became widely played at memorials and funerals in El Paso in the wake of a mass shooting that killed 23 …

Mental flexibility can preserve relationship satisfaction amid partner’s sleep issues

Mental flexibility can preserve relationship satisfaction amid partner’s sleep issues

We all know that getting a good night’s sleep is vital for physical and mental health. Yet many people share a bed with a partner who can’t help disturb their sleep. For example through their insomnia, frequently going to the bathroom, snoring, or a tendency to toss and turn in bed. Unsurprisingly, research has shown that poor sleep can lead to increased anger and decreased satisfaction with the relationship. But can we avoid falling in this trap, short of sleeping in separate bedrooms? Yes, if we are naturally good – or learn to be so – at goal disengagement, the mental flexibility to jettison goals once they prove unachievable, suggests a new study in Frontiers in Psychology. “Here we show that someone’s general capacity to let go of unattainable goals seems to prevent worsening satisfaction with their relationship, if their spouse experiences sleep problems,” said lead author Dr Meaghan Barlow, an assistant professor at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. “This ability might allow such people to put more time and effort into their relationship and protect …

Pope withdraws from Good Friday event at last minute ‘to preserve health’ | Pope Francis

Pope withdraws from Good Friday event at last minute ‘to preserve health’ | Pope Francis

Pope Francis cancelled his attendance at the Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum at the last minute, in what the Vatican described as an attempt “to preserve his health” ahead of more Easter week engagements. Francis’ agenda for the next two days consists of an Easter vigil service on Saturday evening, an Easter mass, and the delivery of his twice-annual Urbi et Orbi (to the city and world) message and blessing on Sunday morning. The 87-year-old’s sudden no-show is likely to renew concerns about his declining strength. Francis uses a cane or a wheelchair to move around due to a knee ailment, and suffers from repeated bouts of bronchitis and influenza. The Vatican announced the pope’s absence from the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) procession just as it was about to start, saying in a statement he would follow it remotely from his Vatican residence. Francis, who had looked fitter this week after weeks in which he struggled to speak in public and cancelled some meetings, also missed the procession last year, after recovering …

Alberta to ban renewables on ‘prime’ land and preserve ‘pristine viewscapes’ | Canada

Alberta to ban renewables on ‘prime’ land and preserve ‘pristine viewscapes’ | Canada

Alberta will block renewable energy projects on “prime” agricultural land and limit the placement of wind turbines to preserve “pristine viewscapes”, a decision that increasingly pits the western Canadian province against environmental groups pushing green energy – and the companies investing in it. The decision, announced by the premier, Danielle Smith, and utilities minister, Nathan Neudorf, on Wednesday, follows a controversial six-month ban on new renewable energy projects that is due to expire on 29 February. Alberta’s moratorium, announced in August, left energy companies uncertain about billions in future investment, even as the region, with its clear skies and an abundance of wind, led the country in new renewable projects. Nearly a third of Alberta’s grid is now powered by renewables and the province has shifted away from coal at a far faster rate than expected. But Smith has pushed back against federal rules that aim to reduce the greenhouse-gas emissions of provincial power grids. Last month, amid recording-breaking winter temperatures, Albertans were sent emergency alerts asking them to conserve power as the electrical grid …
