Search for tourist who plunged into 8m-deep sinkhole in Malaysia enters third day

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: The search for an Indian tourist who fell into an 8m-deep sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre entered its third day on Sunday (Aug 25). The 48-year-old woman was walking on a pavement when it suddenly caved in on Friday morning, sparking a search-and-rescue operation. However, the operation was halted on Saturday evening due to a lack of new leads, and resumed on Sunday morning.  Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his sympathy and condolences to the family on Sunday, and instructed the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to meet with them, according to the New Straits Times. “The search-and-rescue mission continues. There are still issues with the soil that we need to address,” he told reporters. Earlier, the authorities had inspected all six manholes from Jalan Masjid India – where the incident happened – to a sewerage pond in Pantai Dalam. However, there were no signs of of the woman, except for a pair of slippers belonging to her. Source link

How ‘The Fall Guy’ Stuntman Troy Lindsay Brown Plunged 150 Feet and Lived to Tell the Tale

How ‘The Fall Guy’ Stuntman Troy Lindsay Brown Plunged 150 Feet and Lived to Tell the Tale

Troy’s father, Bob Brown, was one of Hollywood’s premiere stunt performers of the 1980s and ’90s, a double for Jim Carrey in The Mask and The Cable Guy and for Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Action Hero, to name just a few of the dozens of films in which he endured punches, plunges, and crashes. Bob still does it today, although in recent years he has transitioned more to the role of stunt supervisor. In 2002, when Troy was around 3 years old and his dad was 43, Bob set a high-fall record by jumping through a skyscraper window 20 stories in the air—while engulfed in flames—for the World Stunt Awards ceremony on ABC. “I just grew up with it,” Troy tells Vanity Fair. “It was just like, this is what my dad does. He just does stunts in movies, and I always thought that was the coolest thing ever. I would bring my dad into show-and-tell at school and just have him talk about high falls.” A few years later, when Bob was the …

British parliament plunged into chaos over Gaza cease-fire vote – POLITICO

MPs had been set to vote on a motion from the Scottish National Party calling for an “immediate” cease-fire in Gaza. The SNP used its dedicated “opposition day” in the Commons to push the motion. But Hoyle intervened to allow the opposition Labour Party — which feared a rebellion from its own MPs amid pressure over its response to the conflict — to put forward its own amendment to the motion, which also backed an  “immediate humanitarian cease-fire” but included softer language on Israel’s conduct in the war. Hoyle’s move had little precedent, and was criticized on the record by the chamber’s most senior official, Clerk Tom Goldsmith. The decision denied the SNP — seeking to exploit Labour divisions on Gaza — a chance to vote on their own motion on an SNP opposition day. Hoyle’s intervention sparked outrage too from the ruling Conservatives, who had planned to offer their own Gaza motion but withdrew from the process in protest. A visibly emotional Hoyle eventually apologized — but only once Labour’s motion had passed. “I …

Central London office spend plunged in 2023

Central London office spend plunged in 2023

The West End had the most success in London for back to office occupancy last year, with the area also performing ahead of the UK figure according to latest research. Remit Consulting, which tracks figures provided by building managers, found the average monthly occupancy across the UK in 2023 was 30%. The London figure averaged 30.6% each month, with the West End recording an average of 42%. The company estimates pre-Covid office occupancy levels in London would have averaged between 60-80%. Landells at Remit Consulting said: “Average office occupancy levels in 2023 were the highest recorded since the lifting of lockdown restrictions and show a slow but positive upward trend, despite occasional setbacks due to factors like the train strikes and school holidays.” She added: “In London, the West End’s strong performance indicates a strong preference from staff for in-person meetings and the social aspects of office environments in central locations and with companies and their employees finding a middle ground between remote and in-office work, a new, more adaptable approach to utilising office space …

Armed gangs and prison breaks: how Ecuador was plunged into chaos and bloodshed | Ecuador

Armed gangs and prison breaks: how Ecuador was plunged into chaos and bloodshed | Ecuador

Few Ecuadoreans were prepared for just how swiftly and steeply the security situation in their country could plummet. Murder and violence linked to drug trafficking has soared, as the country has become one of the most dangerous in Latin America. Until just a few years ago, Ecuador was a corner of relative peace sandwiched between the world’s two biggest cocaine producers, Colombia and Peru, which have recently seen their own violent internal conflicts between security forces and nominally leftist rebels linked to the lucrative drugs trade. Facing its own surge in violence, Ecuador’s young president, Daniel Noboa, has declared a state of “internal armed conflict”, designating 20 drug trafficking gangs as terrorist groups and authorising Ecuador’s military to “neutralise” the crime factions “within the bounds of international humanitarian law”. That announcement came as Ecuador was plunged into chaos and bloodshed after the country’s most notorious gang leader and druglord, Adolfo Macías, alias Fito, escaped from prison on Sunday. Noboa’s subsequent declaration of a state of emergency prompted criminals to unleash a wave of attacks inside …

Gaza plunged into darkness after Israel cuts off communications, intensifying siege | Gaza

Palestinians, aid groups, journalists and civil society organisations have said they have lost touch with staff and families in Gaza, after Israel knocked out internet and communications, cutting off the territory’s residents from contact with the outside world. NetBlocks, a watchdog organisation that monitors cybersecurity and the internet, reported a collapse in connectivity in the Gaza Strip late on Friday. The Palestinian telecom provider, Paltel, said the bombardment caused “complete disruption” of internet, cellular and landline services. Shortly after reports of lost service, exceptionally heavy bombardment was heard in the territory and the Israel Defense Forces said their air and ground forces were intensifying their attacks in Gaza. Already in darkness after most electricity was cut off and fuel for generators ran out, Gaza’s 2.3 million people were thrown into isolation from the rest of the world. Explosions from continuous airstrikes lit up the sky over Gaza City for hours, but the communications cutoff meant that the number of casualties from strikes and details of ground incursions could not immediately be known.
