DfE eases T-level work placement rules to boost take-up

More from this theme Recent articles Government rules for T-level industry placements have been further relaxed in a bid to boost the number of students taking the flagship qualifications. Learners on nearly all courses will now be allowed to complete 20 per cent of their 315-hour total placement remotely instead of in a physical workplace – with this allowance increased to 50 per cent for students on digital T-levels. Officials will also allow placements to be carried out as “simulated activity” on the school or college’s own site, but only if this is overseen by their industry placement employer.  And placements will “no longer be restricted to the specific T-level subject being studied by students”. Baroness Smith Guidance detailing the changes will be published in January 2025 and will come into effect immediately. The reforms come amid lower-than-expected enrolments, high dropout rates, and long-held concern that there are not enough employers willing to offer enough work placements when T-levels are fully rolled out. Apple reverses decision to change ‘end call’ button’s placement in iOS 17

Apple’s iOS 17 update, announced at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, didn’t usher in many controversial changes. That is, apart from relocating the end-call button to the bottom right-hand side of the call screen gird. However, the Cupertino company has now reversed that decision, shifting the end call button back to the center-bottom — similar to where it was in iOS 16. People probably didn’t like the change in the position of the end call button because they might be used to tap that part of the screen to end a call without looking. Apple previously placed the end call button below the icon grid on the call screen on iOS 16. With the iOS 17 beta version, the company initially updated the call screen UI to accommodate the Contact Posters features. The changes placed the icon grid almost at the bottom of the screen, but moved the end-call button to the bottom right. University is expensive – how a mid-course work placement can help with costs and careers

Students are struggling financially. A 2022 survey from the Office for National Statistics found that half of students in England felt they were were facing financial difficulties, and that one-quarter of students had borrowed more to cope with the cost of living crisis. In England, tuition fees for bachelor’s programmes are the highest among OECD countries. In addition to the financial burden of a degree, students have to deal with stress about getting a job in the competitive labour market and the prospects for their future career. A report on the graduate job market found that in 2022, there were an average of 39 applications for each graduate-level vacancy. A 2021 survey of young people found that over one-third felt uncertain about their career plans. University students found a lack of work experience to be a key obstacle in applying for jobs and close to one in two university students didn’t feel prepared for getting a job. Working during a university degree is one way of both gaining work experience and some much-needed cash. But …
