At least 42 Palestinians killed as Israel ramps up bombing in central Gaza | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu says conditions for reaching a ceasefire in Gaza have improved. At least 42 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip, medical sources told Al Jazeera Arabic, as Israeli forces stepped up their bombardment of central areas and tanks pushed deeper into the enclave’s north and south. Six people were killed in two air strikes on a house and near Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip while four others were killed when an Israeli strike hit a motorcycle in Khan Younis in the south, the Reuters news agency reported on Thursday, quoting medics. Later, an Israeli air strike near a tent camp housing displaced families in eastern Khan Younis killed at least five people and wounded others. In Nuseirat refugee camp, Israeli warplanes carried out several air attacks, destroying a multistorey building and hitting roads outside mosques. At least 11 people were killed in the strikes, according to health officials at al-Awda Hospital in the camp. They said in a statement that dozens …

Israelis and Palestinians React to Assassination of Hamas Leader

new video loaded: Israelis and Palestinians React to Assassination of Hamas Leader transcript Back transcript Israelis and Palestinians React to Assassination of Hamas Leader While some Israelis expressed hope that the war might end soon, many Palestinians were doubtful that the death of Yahya Sinwar would lead to a cease-fire. “We are kind of, let’s say, happy to see some kind of justice, to see that Sinwar is dead now. But as I said, what’s most important is that we want to see all the hostages coming back.” “The leader is gone now. But this does not solve the problem. The problem now is that all the hostages that Hamas have in Gaza, and it depends now on the Israeli government.” “I hope it’s going to bring peace as soon as possible. And quiet, and not a war. The war should stop, and I hope it’s going to be positive stage for the State of Israel.” Recent episodes in Middle East Crisis Show more videos from Middle East Crisis Source link

Palestinian allies make last-ditch push for speaker on the DNC stage

Palestinian allies make last-ditch push for speaker on the DNC stage

(RNS) — Arab Americans, Muslim Americans and their interfaith allies spent much of Thursday (Aug. 22) pushing Democratic officials to allow a Palestinian American to speak from the party convention’s main stage, to convey a message of solidarity despite the party’s so-far consistent support for Israel in its prosecution of the war in Gaza. The push was accompanied by an all-night sit-in outside Chicago’s United Center at which members of the “uncommitted” movement also made speeches pressing the Democratic National Convention to feature a Palestinian speaker. The uncommitted — so-called because members of the movement wrote in “uncommitted” on their ballots rather than vote for President Joe Biden in this year’s Democratic primaries — want the DNC to recognize the suffering of Palestinians, 40,000 of whom have been killed by Israel’s massive Gaza assault of the past 10 months, an assault backed by U.S. bombs and munitions that has flattened the Gaza Strip and left tens of thousands homeless.  In an emotional speech from the stage of the convention on Wednesday, Israeli Americans Rachel Goldberg-Polin …

‘Like the horrors of judgment day’: the cost to Palestinians of Israel’s hostage rescue | Israel-Gaza war

‘Like the horrors of judgment day’: the cost to Palestinians of Israel’s hostage rescue | Israel-Gaza war

The market in Nuseirat was busy on Saturday morning. Among the crowds were Asia El-Nemer, looking for a pharmacy that still had stock of her sister’s medication, and Ansam Haroun, hoping to find new clothes to lift her daughters’ spirits on the forthcoming Eid al-Adha holiday. This part of central Gaza had emptied at the start of the year when Israeli troops first moved through, destroying Haroun’s house in an airstrike, but filled up again from May as more than a million people fled north to escape another operation in Rafah. “The Nuseirat market is always crowded, but now more than usual because of the many displaced people,” said Haroun, 29, who is now staying with an uncle. She was looking at outfits for the girls when the first Israeli airstrikes hit, and almost without thinking raced out of the door to go to them. Outside, she found a scene “like the horrors of judgment day”, as panicked crowds tried to escape the coming onslaught. Helicopters and quadcopter drones would soon join the assault that …

Hamas signals post-war ambition in talks with Palestinian rival Fatah

Hamas signals post-war ambition in talks with Palestinian rival Fatah

RAMALLAH: Deep divisions will limit progress at reconciliation talks between Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah this month, conversations with five sources in the groups indicate, but the meetings highlight that the militant group is likely to retain influence after Israel’s war in Gaza. The talks between Hamas and the Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will be held in China in mid-June, according to officials from both sides. They follow two recent rounds of reconciliation talks, one in China and one in Russia. China’s foreign ministry declined to comment. The next meeting will be held amid attempts by international mediators to reach a ceasefire deal for Gaza, with one of the key sticking points being the “day-after” plan – how the enclave will be governed. Considered a terrorist organisation by many Western nations, Hamas was shunned long before its Oct 7 attacks killed 1,200 people in Israel, with more than 250 hostages taken, triggering the war in Gaza. But even as it is pummelled militarily, the meetings of Hamas politicians with officials from the Fatah …

Singapore votes in favour of UN resolution supporting full Palestinian membership

Singapore votes in favour of UN resolution supporting full Palestinian membership

The vote also represented Singapore’s “heartfelt desire to see both parties resume direct face-to-face negotiations in good faith”, he said. Reflecting on the “heinous” Oct 7 attacks by Hamas and Israel’s military response, which he reiterated had “gone too far”, Dr Balakrishnan said that the request to consider Palestinian membership had come at a “particularly difficult moment”. However, he said that the status quo was no longer enough, and that a “restart of diplomatic efforts” was needed. “Ideally, Palestine’s UN membership should have been considered when hostilities were ceased, when all civilian hostages were released, and when Israelis and Palestinians were back at the negotiating table,” he said. “But frankly, we are now so far from those conditions that Singapore and many other countries had to consider how our vote today would help lay the groundwork for an end to hostilities that would hopefully lead to an enduring peace. Or at the very least a return to the negotiating table to talk about how to get there. “The only viable solution – difficult as it …

UN agency closes East Jerusalem compound after fire it says was arson

JERUSALEM —  The main United Nations aid agency for Palestinians closed its headquarters in East Jerusalem after local Israeli residents set fire to areas at the edge of the sprawling compound, the agency said. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNWRA, said in a post on the social media platform X that he had decided to close the compound until proper security was restored. He said Thursday’s incident was the second in less than a week. “This is an outrageous development. Once again, the lives of U.N. staff were at a serious risk,” he said. “It is the responsibility of the State of Israel as an occupying power to ensure that United Nations personnel and facilities are protected at all times,” he said. UNRWA, set up to deal with the Palestinian refugees who fled or were forced from their homes during the 1948 war around the time of Israel’s creation, has long been a target of Israeli hostility. Israeli police said they had opened an investigation into a brush fire adjacent to the UNRWA compound. “Preliminary …
