JPMorgan says majority of ATMs operating normally amid outages

JPMorgan Chase said it is working to restore service to automated teller machines (ATMs) affected by a global digital outage while a majority of its ATMs are operating normally, according to an emailed statement on Friday. The largest U.S. bank declined to comment on how many of its ATMs were offline. It has 16,000 ATMs across the U.S. and 4,800 branches. Financial firms were among many snarled by a global digital outage on Friday that caused hourslong disruptions to computer systems at hundreds of companies. Bank teller stations were not working at at least two JPMorgan branches in New York, according to employees at different locations who declined to be identified discussing the outage. Both employees said they were unsure when their computers would be restored. Branches have remained open, and at the sites affected by the outages, customers were able to access banking services by making manual transactions with tellers or using ATMs, a source familiar with the situation said. Major 911 outages in 4 states leave millions without a way to contact local authorities

Major 911 outages in 4 states leave millions without a way to contact local authorities

Law enforcement agencies across four states were left scrambling following reports of major 911 outages that saw millions unable to contact authorities late Wednesday. Many of the outages — reported in Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota and Texas — were restored by the late evening. While officials haven’t said precisely what caused the outages, they come on the heels of a Department of Homeland Security warning of heightened cyberattack risks on 911 services as they moved to internet-based systems. So far, there’s no indication that the 911 outages overnight were caused by a cyberattack or other malicious act, law enforcement officials told NBC News on Thursday.  “We are aware of reports of 911-related outages and we are currently investigating,” the Federal Communications Commission wrote on X on Thursday morning. It was less than two months ago that a widespread AT&T outage left thousands without service across multiple states, and impacted some calls to 911 for hours, which the carrier said was likely caused by a process error — not a cyberattack. Local law enforcement agencies on Wednesday reported …

How Vietnamese are using e-scooters to save businesses from power outages

How Vietnamese are using e-scooters to save businesses from power outages

Vietnam has millions of e-scooters and an unstable power supply. One might think that these two things signal trouble when put together, but here’s how some Vietnamese are using their e-scooters to improve stability of the electrical grid and help small businesses avoid blackouts. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s most populous city, power outages are quite common. They’re often scheduled or announced ahead of time, but power outages do occur on a weekly basis, in various parts of the city. As a result, larger businesses will have a generator of some sort on hand to keep things running when the power goes out, but many Vietnamese have small, single-person proprietorships (think small shops, food carts and so on) that may not have the resources for something like that. But there’s an active and enterprising community of e-scooter users who are trying to offer a mobile solution to this problem – with the big batteries they carry around in their bikes. The initiative, called Re:Charge has been taken on as a grassroots effort by owners …

The attack came a day after Russia launched 31 missiles in a single attack on the capital. It was the largest assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this year and one of the largest since the outbreak of the war, according to Ukrainian authorities. “Even last winter, attacks on our energy system were not as large as they were this night,” said the head of energy utility Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi. The attacks caused a fire at the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station, which supplies electricity to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power installation. The main external power line to the plant was cut …

Several United States cities have experienced cellular outages with thousands of users reporting disruptions to the country’s primary telecommunications services, including AT&T, Verizon and TMobile. AT&T, the largest US mobile phone company, was the worst affected on Thursday, with other companies denying issues, with other companies stating that any connection issues were not related to their own networks. More than 50,000 incidents were reported about 7am East Coast time (12:00 GMT), according to data from the outage tracking website Downdetector.com. The website showed that the impacted cities included San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Boston.
