Armenian protesters vow to oust prime minister – POLITICO

“Pashinyan needs to go,” one middle-aged demonstrator told POLITICO, saying he preferred not to give his name as he feared reprisals. Asked who should take his place as prime minister, or how another leader would avoid conflict with Azerbaijan while still keeping the four villages, the demonstrator said: “Someone else will have a better plan.” Pashinyan has hailed the surrender of the four villages as a major step toward normalizing relations with Azerbaijan — the two countries have fought regularly since the fall of the USSR in 1991 — and respecting its international legal obligations. “We are reproducing the [legal] borders … at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union,” he said last week. Earlier the same day, officials in Yerevan and Moscow confirmed that Russian border guards — stationed along Armenia’s frontiers with Azerbaijan since the 1990s — had been asked to leave their posts and begin withdrawing. In recent years, Armenia has frozen its membership in the Russian-led CSTO military alliance, which refused its calls for support when Azerbaijan launched an …

MTG’s bid to oust “MAGA Mike” Johnson badly fails as Democrats derail “GOP chaos caucus”

MTG’s bid to oust “MAGA Mike” Johnson badly fails as Democrats derail “GOP chaos caucus”

The majority of Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday saved far-right Speaker Mike Johnson from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to oust him after less than seven months in the leadership position. Johnson’s (R-La.) election to the role in October—following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who then left Congress early—was seen as a signal of the MAGA flank’s hold on the Republican Party. However, since then he has faced criticism from Greene (R-Ga.) and others for, among other things, not shutting down the government. Greene delivered on her threatened motion to vacate—provoking boos from fellow lawmakers—after meeting with Johnson for hours on Monday and Tuesday. The final vote to table her resolution was 359-43, with 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats backing the far-right speaker. Seven Democrats voted present and 21 lawmakers did not vote. Ten Republicans joined Greene in trying to give Johnson the boot: Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Eric Burlison (Mo.), Eli Crane (Ariz.), Warren Davidson (Ohio), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Thomas Massie (Ky.), Alex Mooney (W.Va.), Barry Moore (Ala.), Chip Roy (Texas), …

House votes overwhelmingly to save Speaker Johnson from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s push to oust him

House votes overwhelmingly to save Speaker Johnson from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s push to oust him

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and his allies beat back a dramatic effort by far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to oust him from power on Wednesday, ending — for now — months of threats against his speakership. The lopsided vote to “table” or kill Greene’s motion to vacate the speaker’s chair was 359-43. Just 10 Republicans voted with Greene, seven Democrats voted present. There were 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats who voted to kill Greene’s motion; along with the 11 Republicans, 32 Democrats voted to move forward with her motion to oust Johnson. The vote came after weeks of threats from Greene to force the issue and after dragging her feet as it became clear she didn’t have enough support to remove the speaker. Unlike last year’s successful vote to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., many Democrats had made clear they would vote to save the speaker, especially after Johnson helped stave off a government shutdown, pushed through the renewal of a critical FISA spy tool and passed billions of dollars in foreign aid for Ukraine after months …

Marjorie Taylor Greene to call a vote to remove Mike Johnson as speaker of the House. The vote was 359-43 with seven members voting present. 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voted to table the motion. “Hopefully, this is the end of the personality politics and the frivolous character assassination that has defined the 118th Congress,” Johnson told reporters after the vote. “It’s regrettable. It’s not who we are as Americans and we’re better than this — we need to get beyond it.” Only 10 Republicans voted alongside Greene. As promised, House Democrats largely supported Johnson in setting aside the call for …

US House Quickly Defeats Greene’s Effort to Oust Speaker Johnson

US House Quickly Defeats Greene’s Effort to Oust Speaker Johnson

By David Morgan and Makini Brice WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday swiftly and overwhelmingly defeated an effort by firebrand Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene to remove Speaker Mike Johnson, a fellow Republican, from his leadership role. Democrats joined Republicans in a 359-43 vote to protect Johnson’s speakership, in a bid to avoid a replay of the chaos that occurred in October when Republicans ousted his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy. Greene’s move represented a rare Republican defiance of presidential candidate Donald Trump, who in a social media post following the House vote on Wednesday, said it was “not the time” for Republicans to try to push out their own speaker. Greene’s measure, known as a motion to vacate, showcased the disorder that has marked Republicans’ slim 217-213 House majority, particularly since it had been clear that the effort would fail given Democrats’ opposition. “I appreciate the show of confidence from my colleagues to defeat this misguided effort,” Johnson, 52, said following the vote. “Hopefully this is the end of the character assassination that has …

The Rebel Plot To Oust Rishi Sunak Fizzles Out Despite Ominous Local Election Results

The Rebel Plot To Oust Rishi Sunak Fizzles Out Despite Ominous Local Election Results

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak looks all but guaranteed to lead the Tories into the next election (Alamy) 4 min read2 hr Rishi Sunak is expected to avoid a Tory rebel bid to oust him as party leader and Prime Minister despite an ominous picture emerging from Thursday’s local elections. Plotters who for weeks have hoped and briefed that a dire set of results on 2 May would be enough to turn the parliamentary party against Sunak appear to have admitted defeat. It means he is all but guaranteed to lead the Tories into the next general election. With more results to be announced this weekend, the Conservatives look set to lose over 500 council seats across the country, which is nearly half of the seats the party is contesting. At the Blackpool South by-election, an enormous 26-point swing to Labour — the third biggest swing from the Conservatives to Labour in history — further crystallised the size of the hole which Sunak’s beleaguered party finds itself in as the next general election approaches.  The scale of the losses …

Republicans, Democrats, and Donald Trump Agree on One Thing: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Move to Oust Mike Johnson Is a Dumb Idea

Republicans, Democrats, and Donald Trump Agree on One Thing: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Move to Oust Mike Johnson Is a Dumb Idea

Last month, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s GOP colleagues responded to her calls to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson by saying things like, “Don’t bother us,” and stop “airing your grievances,” and “Nobody cares what Marjorie Taylor Greene says or thinks.” Unfortunately for Greene (or maybe unfortunately for her coworkers), she did not appear to get the message, and rather than moving on, decided on Wednesday to dig in. Speaking to reporters in Washington, the far-right congresswoman announced that she will officially raise a “motion to vacate” Johnson next week, i.e. try to boot him from his leadership position. Claiming Johnson “is not capable” of doing his job, Greene said she was giving Republicans the weekend to “prepare,” adding, “I care about my conference.” It also seems likely she‘s hoping people will change their minds over the next several days, because currently she appears to have little support—on either side of the aisle. As The Washington Post reports, representatives Thomas Massie and Paul Gosar are the only Republicans who’ve publicly backed Greene’s effort to remove Johnson, while …

MTG has little support to oust Mike Johnson — but he may already be doomed anyway

MTG has little support to oust Mike Johnson — but he may already be doomed anyway

Marjorie Taylor Greene isn’t winning many converts to her cause of replacing House Speaker Mike Johnson, who offended the pro-Russia Republican by allowing a vote on aid for Ukraine. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t making life difficult for the GOP caucus and its tenuous grip on power. At a press conference Wednesday, the Georgia Republican said she plans to force a vote next week on Johnson’s leadership, accusing him of trying to “Make Ukraine Great Again” by not depriving it of American ammunition. She was joined by just one other colleague, Rep. Thomas Massie, a far-right lawmaker from Kentucky; another supporter of the leadership challenge, Rep. Paul Gosar, a far-right lawmaker from Arizona, did not attend. Johnson has claimed support from former President Donald Trump, publicly dismissing Greene, an ally of deposed Speaker Kevin McCarthy, as fundamentally unserious. But as CBS News noted, three votes from disgruntled Republicans would be enough to throw the House of Representatives into turmoil, forcing Johnson to rely on support from Democrats to remain in power (“They will doom …

Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will move next week to try to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson from the job over his reliance on votes from Democrats to pass key legislation, including aid for Ukraine. Greene did not give any further specifics on when she plans to bring up the resolution known as a motion to vacate. Greene started the process for trying to oust Johnson weeks ago and has repeatedly threatened to follow through without actually calling up the measure and forcing a vote. “What are we giving Republican voters to vote for?” Greene asked at a press conference outside of the Capitol on …

Marjorie Taylor Greene speaks on effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson: Watch live

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is slated to deliver remarks Wednesday morning on her effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). Greene vowed yesterday to push ahead with her resolution against Johnson, even after Democratic leaders said they would shield him from a conservative coup — at least until the end of the term. She announced her plan in a post on the social platform X, shortly after the top three Democrats announced they would move to table her motion to vacate if she forced a vote on the floor. The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT. Watch the live video above. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media Inc. All rights reserved.
