Mark and Sean Harmon are ready to peel back and reveal everything there is to know about Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The father-son duo are serving as executive producers of NCIS: Origins, the prequel to the iconic NCIS franchise set to come to the CBS fall lineup later this year. And while speaking to ET’s Kevin Frazier on Thursday at the CBS Schedule Reveal Celebration at the Paramount Studios Lot in Los Angeles, California, the Harmons made it clear that they are laser-focused on how exactly they want to travel down memory lane. “It’s all going to be a time that we haven’t traveled before. It’s 1990, so it’s something we’re all looking forward to,” said Mark, who portrayed Special Agent Gibbs during his incredible 19-season run on NCIS. “It will be different.” NCIS: Origins is the brainchild of Sean, who concocted the idea while playing the younger version of Special Agent Gibbs during flashback episodes. “This is an idea we worked on for a long time and just really happy to finally be at this point in the …

The Origins of Anime: Watch Early Japanese Animations (1917 to 1931)

The Origins of Anime: Watch Early Japanese Animations (1917 to 1931)

Japanese animation, AKA anime, might be filled with large-eyed maidens, way cool robots, and large-eyed, way cool maiden/robot hybrids, but it often shows a level of daring, complexity and creativity not typically found in American mainstream animation. And the form has spawned some clear masterpieces from Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira to Mamoru Oishii’s Ghost in the Shell to pretty much everything that Hayao Miyazaki has ever done. Anime has a far longer history than you might think; in fact, it was at the vanguard of Japan’s furious attempts to modernize in the early 20th century. The oldest surviving example of Japanese animation, Namakura Gatana (Blunt Sword), dates back to 1917, though much of the earliest animated movies were lost following a massive earthquake in Tokyo in 1923. As with much of Japan’s cultural output in the first decades of the 20th Century, animation from this time shows artists trying to incorporate traditional stories and motifs in a new modern form. Above is Oira no Yaku (Our Baseball Game) from 1931, which shows rabbits squaring off against tanukis …

‘The Hopeful,’ film about Adventist origins, debuts in theaters

(RNS) — A lifelong Seventh-day Adventist, Emmy Award-winning director/producer Kyle Portbury wasn’t always vocal about his faith tradition. Growing up, he recalls hesitating to talk about going to church on Saturday or observing a 24-hour Sabbath, fearing friends would find his faith “weird.” But after years of directing and co-producing “The Hopeful,” a film about the birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he’s discovered that people are more open to learning about his tradition than he thought. “I think what it’s allowed me to do is feel confident that, actually, the origins of my faith are credible, and they are appealing to other people, and I’m going to be comfortable talking about that,” Portbury told Religion News Service. “It has hugely changed the way that I relate to my faith.” Distributed by Fathom Events, the film is premiering in over 900 theaters across the U.S. for a limited release on April 17 and 18. And it isn’t just for Adventists — according to Portbury, the film tells a universal story about hope amid despair for …

Scientists, spearheaded by researchers from the University at Buffalo (UB), have unveiled a groundbreaking study published in Nature Genetics, offering profound insights into the genetic history of Arabica coffee, the beloved species responsible for approximately 60% of the world’s coffee production. Through cutting-edge genomic analysis, researchers have reconstructed the evolutionary path of Arabica coffee, shedding light on its origins and how it has adapted over millennia. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first Paschal full moon following the March equinox (usually occurring around March 21), in accordance with the Gregorian calendar.  Roman Catholics and Protestants typically determine Easter through the Gregorian calendar, while the Eastern Orthodox church determines Easter through the Julian calendar.   When Christians Began Celebrating Easter L’Ascension, by Gustave Dore, 1879.
