These are not responses to some new governmental gaffe, but damning verdicts on Jamie Oliver’s latest TV show. When the first instalment of Jamie’s Air Fryer Meals aired on Monday night – with sponsorship from Tefal, the company that makes and markets Oliver-branded pans – it was greeted online by a flurry of snarky comments, taking issue with the chef’s attempts to make low-cost, speedy meals. Why did one man faffing around with a table-top convection oven provoke so much ire? Over the years, Oliver has turned laddy relatability into a hugely successful brand. A quarter of a century after his first cookbook was released, the 48-year-old is still the UK’s biggest-selling non-fiction author, with new shows popping up regularly on Channel 4. His campaign work – on issues like school meals and junk food – has permeated the public consciousness in ways that most celeb-driven causes …

John Oliver uses a brutal parody ad to take aim at Medicaid

John Oliver uses a brutal parody ad to take aim at Medicaid

Medicaid, the public health program for low income families, has a number of issues, ranging from people abruptly losing their coverage to organisations costing states millions through fraudulent billing. As John Oliver points out in the Last Week Tonight video above, though, so much of the conversation seems to focus on scare-mongering about the people actually using the program. “So much of the talk around Medicaid seems to centre on the fear that someone, somewhere, might be gaming the system,” says Oliver. “Again and again, the priority seems to be making sure no individual gets a penny more healthcare than they deserve, even as states are weirdly blithe about much bigger amounts of money flowing out the door to large organizations.” To really drill the point home, Oliver enlists comedian Amber Ruffin to help create a nightmarish parody ad featuring talking fruit and vegetables. The Next Mass Extinction? | Oliver Whang

The Next Mass Extinction? | Oliver Whang

In August 2023 dead elephant seals washed ashore on beaches in Argentina. First a handful appeared outside Rio Grande, a coastal city on the eastern side of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The next day there were more. Then the sightings moved up the seaboard, from Rio Gallegos to the Chubut province to Rio Negro to Buenos Aires. Park rangers saw pregnant seals head toward the shore, seize up in the water, spasm, and drown. Later that month, an Argentine veterinarian named Marcela Uhart traveled out to Península Valdés, a flat mushroom-shaped peninsula jutting into the Atlantic that serves as a popular seal breeding ground. Raised on a ranch in the pampas, Uhart has studied fauna in the region for nearly thirty years; she currently works in Patagonia for the University of California, Davis. Arriving at the peninsula, she found over a thousand dead seal pups, their bodies rotting into the sand. “It was surreal,” she told me last month. “The beach [was] filled with carcasses, scattered individuals, sick and dying, pups that were caught …

Oliver Hudson Clarifies Viral Comments About ‘Trauma’ He Experienced With Mom Goldie Hawn

Oliver Hudson is setting the record straight when it comes to his previous comments about his upbringing with his mother, Goldie Hawn, and her longtime partner, Kurt Russell.  During Monday’s episode of his Sibling Rivalry podcast with sister Kate Hudson, the 47-year-old actor argued that his comments on having felt vulnerability and occasional neglect during his childhood have been “taken so far out of context.” “I’m even afraid to talk about it to inflame this even more, because everything is taken so far out of context. If you listen to the whole thing, it’s more about my child feelings in that moment rather than me and how I feel about Mom as a parent,” Oliver explained. “I don’t know who I would be without my mother,” he added about Goldie, 78. “I can’t even fathom it. The love that I have for her and the respect and the reverence that I have for her is beyond anything. So, it was just completely taken out of context.” Kate quipped that she “immediately” knew her brother’s comments would make headlines because he used “such clickbait words.” …

“Begging strangers for money”: John Oliver mocks Trump hawking products to pay for legal troubles

John Oliver has called out Donald Trump for a recent slew of  “cash grabs.”  On Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver observed that Trump has “had a rough run in the courts lately. Between the E. Jean Carroll defamation judgment and New York State’s fraud case, he’s on the hook for over half a billion dollars, but even that doesn’t capture the full extent of the financial damage.” “Apparently since leaving office, he spent more than $100 million on legal bills alone, which averages more than $90,000 a day, none of it paid for with his own money,” Oliver said, citing a New York Times report. “A lot has come from his supporters because he’s repeatedly used his legal troubles as a pretext to ask for donations, including this plea on Tuesday,” he added, showing a clip of the ex-president speaking to MAGA supporters: “We’re fighting. We’re winning. You see what’s going on. So whatever you can do to help financially would be fantastic, because we have to beat it if it’s $5 or $10 or $100, whatever …

Olivia Colman is right that an ‘Oliver Colman’ would be paid more – but to a point

Olivia Colman is right that an ‘Oliver Colman’ would be paid more – but to a point

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Nobody particularly likes movie stars talking about their salaries. It’s all a bit gauche, isn’t it? A bit, as Chandler Bing would say, “my wallet’s too small for my fifties and my diamond shoes are too tight”. For nothing inflames the commentariat faster than a rich celebrity talking about being paid – even if the celebrity in question is Olivia Colman. But she has made a good point about who in Hollywood gets paid what. This weekend, the Oscar winner told CNN that “if I was Oliver Colman, I’d be earning a f*** of a lot more than I am”, adding: “I know of one pay disparity which is a 12,000 per cent difference. Do the maths.” The idea of a better remunerated “Oliver Colman” has understandably earned the most attention when it comes to Colman’s comments, and may very well be accurate – but it’s also the least interesting …

Olivia Colman Calls Out Pay Disparity in Hollywood, Says She’d Earn a Lot More ‘If I Was Oliver Colman’

Olivia Colman Calls Out Pay Disparity in Hollywood, Says She’d Earn a Lot More ‘If I Was Oliver Colman’

Olivia Colman is getting candid about the long-protested gender pay disparity in Hollywood. During a recent appearance on CNN’s The Amanpour Hour where she was discussing her latest film, Wicked Little Letters, the actress and producer opened up about the wage disparity that still effects the industry — even for an Oscar-winner such as herself. “Don’t get me started on the pay disparity, but male actors get paid more because they used to say they drew in the audiences,” The Crown star told host Christiane Amanpour. “And actually, that hasn’t been true for decades, but they still like to use that as a reason to not pay women as much as their male counterparts.” When Amanpour asked if the Emmy winner has experienced pay disparity firsthand despite being an award-winning actress, Colman bluntly declared that her accolades — which include an Oscar, two Emmys, and four BAFTAs — do not make her the exception. “I’m very aware that if I was Oliver Colman, I’d be earning a f**k of a lot more than I am,” she said in response. “I know of one …
