Martyn Oliver on Ofsted reform: 8 things we learned

More from this theme Recent articles Ofsted chief inspector Sir Martyn Oliver said new report cards will provide “high information” but have “more proportionate stakes” for school leaders. Appearing in front of the education committee today, he also talked about what the report cards will cover, proposed new safeguarding checks and his concerns over the special educational needs system. Here’s your Schools Week round-up of the best bits … 1. Report cards: ‘high information, more proportionate stakes’ A consultation on introducing school report cards in September will launch this month. Oliver said that one-word Ofsted judgements are “low information and high stakes”. “I think we can move to high information and more proportionate stakes, and still raise accountability and still tell parents very clearly the performance of schools,” he told MPs. He said schools will retain their one-word judgements until they have been reinspected under the new report card system. On the consultation, he said it will “present a proposed model…it will ask questions about those proposals, if people think the way of reporting is …

Ofsted chief Oliver faces new year committee grilling

Sir Martyn Oliver to face MPs over progress in addressing coroner’s concerns following death of Ruth Perry Sir Martyn Oliver to face MPs over progress in addressing coroner’s concerns following death of Ruth Perry More from this theme Recent articles MPs will question Ofsted chief inspector Sir Martyn Oliver next week on the watchdog’s progress in addressing concerns raised by a coroner following the death of headteacher Ruth Perry. Oliver, who has just marked one year in the role, will appear in front of the Parliamentary education committee on Tuesday, alongside national education director Lee Owston and national regulation and social care director Yvette Stanley. Just weeks before Oliver took the helm, a coroner ruled that an inspection at Caversham Primary School, Reading, had contributed to the death of Perry in 2022. At the time, coroner Heidi Connor warned there was a “risk of future deaths if there is only lip service paid to learning from tragedies like this”. The committee said it would “scrutinise Sir Martyn’s progress in addressing the coroner’s concerns, implementing the …

The Guardian newspaper reported Saturday (9 November) that the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation had condemned Billy And The Epic Escape, which was published earlier this year. The group criticised one of the subplots of the book, which tells the story of a First Nations girl living in foster care, for contributing to the “erasure, trivialisation, and stereotyping of First Nations peoples and experiences”. In a statement, Oliver, 49, said he was “devastated” to have caused offence and apologised “wholeheartedly”. “It was never my intention to misinterpret this deeply painful issue,” he said. “Together with my publishers we have decided to withdraw the book from sale.” First Nation campaigners were particularly …

‘People like it because it’s the messy truth’: Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver on their hit podcast Miss Me? | Lily Allen

In a photographer’s studio in north London, sitting at a wooden table with mugs of tea, two friends are having a chat. They’ve discussed food and clothes, but now they’re on to their actual friendship: the reason why we’re here. “I think before this podcast,” says Miquita Oliver, “a lot of people who were aware that Lily and me have a friendship would be basing it on pictures of us leaving the Groucho pissed when we were 23…” She looks at Lily Allen, who is laughing quite hard. “When we used to leave the Groucho,” says Allen, “there would be these paparazzi outside… And Miquita would always grab a copy of the Evening Standard, to try to make herself look more studious!” Oliver (also laughing): “Just so you know, I’ve been reading the paper, while they all got fucked up!” Allen and Oliver backstage at V festival, 2006. Ofsted grades keep getting better after Oliver takes helm

Ofsted grades keep getting better after Oliver takes helm

More from this theme Recent articles Sir Martyn Oliver has overseen big changes in how Ofsted conducts inspections since taking the job in January. Have grades changed too? Schools Week investigates … Far fewer Ofsted grades lower than ‘good’ have been dished out so far during his tenure, new analysis shows. But Ofsted said this was a continued “upward trend in inspection outcomes over the last few years”, and is not a new pattern. However critics have said grading standards should be “consistent” across the same frameworks – so it is not unfair on schools inspected early on. Schools Week analysed inspection data across the first three months of this year, the latest available, and compared it to the same period in previous years. Oliver joined the inspectorate in January. ‘Difficult to draw firm conclusion’ Of the 373 schools that were inspected and had a report published between January 1 and March 31 this year,11 per cent were rated less than ‘good’. Just three ‘inadequates’ (less than 1 per cent) were issued. Compared to the …

“Doesn’t feel like a coincidence”: John Oliver alarmed over right-wing efforts to censor libraries

John Oliver during Sunday evening’s edition of  “Last Week Tonight” highlighted that libraries are “in trouble because they’ve become another front in the ongoing culture war.” “We’ve talked before about how conservatives have targeted school libraries, but those debates have now emphatically migrated over to public libraries as well,” he said. Oliver cited the growing number of community members and parents across the country who fear harmful and sexual books are available for their children to read at public libraries. “The American Library Association documented efforts to censor over 4,200 unique book titles last year in schools and libraries, the highest level they’ve ever recorded, with the number of titles targeted for censorship at public libraries, in particular, rising by 92% from the previous year,” he said. Even librarians themselves have been at the receiving end of “nasty abuse,” facing bomb threats on their workplace and accusations of pedophilia and grooming children. The show highlighted a librarian who stated: “I can say unequivocally we’re not pedophiles or groomers, and I can say that on behalf of our staff. That– …

John Oliver Mocks Fox News Reporter for ‘Dumbest Question Ever’ on TV

John Oliver used his opening segment on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight to talk about the “hard crackdown” on college students in the U.S. protesting the Israel-Hamas war. He showed clips from a live Fox News report at Columbia University in New York. “Police swarmed campuses in numbers so extreme; this student summed it up pretty well,” he said. The clip started out with a reporter asking a student protestor, “What do you think about the NYPD moving in?” Replied the student: “It’s insane. We have a right to protest. We have a right. Look at that. That’s fucking crazy.” The reporter then asked: “What are you gonna do if you get arrested?” The student replied: “I can’t really do much.” The reporter pressed on: “Will you go with the police if they make an arrest?” Shrugged the student: “I guess so.” Cut back to Oliver: “Did that reporter just ask, ‘Are you going to go with the police if they arrest you?’ Kudos to that student for giving the calmest possible answer to what might …

‘Unethical’ junk food packaging manipulates children into craving sweets, report claims | Jamie Oliver

‘Unethical’ junk food packaging manipulates children into craving sweets, report claims | Jamie Oliver

Food companies are using bright colours and cartoon characters in an “unethical” effort to manipulate children into wanting the sweets and crisps they make, a report has claimed. Bite Back, a campaign group that is part of the chef Jamie Oliver’s empire, asked nutrition experts to analyse 262 sweet food products sold in the UK with packaging likely to appeal to children made by the 10 biggest food companies. Oliver has accused food manufacturers of deliberately using packaging that is designed to “capture young minds” in order to sell more junk food. The research, by Action on Salt, a group of food experts based at Queen Mary University of London, found that: 78% of products were deemed unhealthy because of their fat, salt or sugar content. 67% of those featuring a character were unhealthy. 80% of products used bright colours as well as fun patterns and lettering to attract children’s attention. Bite Back said: “Some businesses are using child-appealing packaging to push unhealthy products to children. Offenders include Kinder Surprise, M&Ms, Randoms and Monster Munch …

Michael Oliver will have been ‘really disappointed’ with Tottenham vs Arsenal error, says Howard Webb

Michael Oliver will have been ‘really disappointed’ with Tottenham vs Arsenal error, says Howard Webb

“For example, we don’t want a goal scored at the other end and then having to take that away as well. Stop the game as soon as possible. Michael went to the screen, looked at it, quickly saw the error and gave a penalty. And as you say, without VAR this would have stayed as a non-awarded penalty. It would have been hugely controversial. So a really good use of the VAR facility here.” Source link

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver Past Seasons to Be Free on YouTube

Last Week Tonight fans hankering for their John Oliver fix this week won’t have a new episode to satiate them, but the show is making up for that by offering the first season for free on YouTube. The show’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted the news on Friday. “There’s no new episode this week!” the X post read. “But we still have current events. From 10 years ago. This Sunday we’ll be dropping all of season 1 for free on YouTube!” The post added that subsequent seasons will drop on YouTube the next time there isn’t a new episode of Last Week Tonight. “Seasons 2-8 to come, whenever we don’t have a new episode. Trust us, some of this is still completely relevant. Some,” continued the post, which was accompanied by a video of highlights from the show’s first season, which focused on topics including Gaza, immigration, the Supreme Court, climate change and the death penalty. Of course, he’s revisited those topics numerous times on the show, which is now in its 11th season. …
