‘Evasive’ Boris Johnson broke lobbying rules in meeting with Venezuela’s Maduro – POLITICO

“Given the evasive nature of your replies, your failure to answer specific questions put to you, or provide the context of your relationship with Merlyn Advisors, the committee has formed the view that there has been a breach of the government’s business appointment rules,” Acoba Chair Eric Pickles wrote in a letter to Johnson published Friday. Johnson previously sought advice from the watchdog over work with Merlyn Advisors as an independent contractor back in September 2023. But that application was withdrawn after Johnson said he would not take up the work. The Sunday Times reported that Johnson’s February trip saw him speak to Maduro about the war in Ukraine and discuss conditions for normalizing relations with the U.K., which does not accept the legitimacy of Maduro’s administration. In his letter to Johnson, Acoba Chair Eric Pickles said there was a “reasonable concern that you were acting for Merlyn Advisors in a capacity that would be considered advisory — which Acoba would expect an application for.” Acoba rules say former ministers must not announce or take …

Oliver Dowden set to blame electoral roll cyber-attacks on China | Politics | News

The UK government is set to blame China for cyber-attacks on the country’s Electoral Commission. The attacks happened in August 2021, but details only emerged last year. It reportedly saw the personal details of millions of voters accessed. Several MPs and peers who have been critical of Beijing are believed to have also been targeted. Deputy PM Oliver Dowden will speak to Parliament later on Monday about the threat posed by China. According to the BBC, other Western nations will express similar concerns. The Electoral Commission acknowledged “hostile actors” have accessed copies of the electroal registers and hacked into both its emails and “control systems”. The Electoral Commission said the attack had not affected any elections or anyone’s registration status. It is now thought that Mr Dowden will suggest those behind the attack had links to Beijing. Dowden is also expected to outline how the UK intends to respond to the threat. The government wants to emphasise that it has already turned down or reduced Chinese investment in infrastructure in recent years due to national …

Labour selects 26-year-old Gogglebox star to take on Deputy PM Oliver Dowden | Politics | News

Labour has selected yet another celebrity candidate to take on the Tories at the General Election, turning to a familiar face from Channel 4’s hit show Gogglebox. Josh Tapper, who regularly appeared on the television reaction show from the age of 15, was last night selected to fight deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden in his Hertfordshire seat of Hertsmere. Reacting to his selection, Mr Tapper said he is “thrilled and honoured” to have won the selection and pledged to not let down local Labour members. He optimistically said: “The work to unseat the Deputy Prime Minister starts now!” Mr Downden has a huge 21,313 majority, winning 62.5% of the vote in 2019, so it is unlikely Mr Tapper will deliver on his goal of toppling the top Tory. However despite his television stardom, he is no political novice. After starring on Gogglebox for four years alongside his mother, father and sister, he left the show in 2017 to pursue a career in the civil service. Mr Tapper joined Downing Street, leaving in 2019. In 2022 …

The Garrick Club has been under pressure to change its rules to allow female members. After years of debate, and accusations that it is an elite and misogynistic institution, change may finally happen later this year when its current members are likely to be asked to vote again on the issue. A Guardian investigation into those who will help decide on this issue reveals a host of people in public life who are members of the club – from the head of the civil service to the chief of MI6, and the deputy prime minister to high court judges. A list of some of the most prominent members of the men-only Garrick reveals the club’s central position as a bulwark of the British establishment, featuring scores of leading lawyers, heads of publicly funded arts institutions and King Charles. We approached all of those pictured for comment. Most declined to do so, but we have included responses from those who did Source link

Rishi Sunak And Oliver Dowden ‘Enabling Anti-Muslim Hatred’, Says Sadiq Khan

Rishi Sunak And Oliver Dowden ‘Enabling Anti-Muslim Hatred’, Says Sadiq Khan

Sadiq Khan has accused Rishi Sunak and Oliver Dowden of “enabling anti-Muslim hatred” after they failed to condemn Lee Anderson over his comments about the London mayor. The prime minister failed to even mention the former Tory deputy chairman in a statement issued the day after he was suspended by the party. It came after Anderson refused to apologise for claiming “Islamists” had “got control of Khan and they’ve got control of London”. Meanwhile, deputy PM Dowden defended Anderson this morning by insisting he was not “intending to be Islamophobic” when he made his comments. Responding on X (formerly Twitter), Khan said: “Rishi Sunak’s statement on hatred in politics fails to mention anti-Muslim hatred at all. “His deputy today refused to condemn Lee Anderson’s racist and Islamophobic remarks. These are just the two most recent examples of enabling anti-Muslim hatred in the Conservative party. “In recent months we’ve seen a terrifying spike in hate towards Jewish and Muslim communities. “Racism is racism. There should be no hierarchy. Now, more than ever, we should be seeking …

Trevor Phillips Clashes With Oliver Dowden Over Tory ‘Extremism’

Trevor Phillips clashed with Oliver Dowden after telling him voters no longer know what the Tory Party stands for. The Sky News presenter asked the deputy prime minister “who are you” following fresh controversy over comments by high-profile Conservatives. Former prime minister Liz Truss was criticised for appearing alongside Steve Bannon at a right-wing conference in America, while Suella Braverman was condemned for claiming that “Islamists” now run the country. And Lee Anderson, the former Tory deputy chairman, was stripped of the Tory whip after he refused to apologise for comments about Sadiq Khan. The controversies come against a backdrop of last Wednesday night’s chaotic vote on Gaza in the Commons, when Speaker Lindsay Hoyle controversially allowed a Labour amendment amid fears of a backlash against MPs by pro-Palestine campaigners. On Sky News this morning, Phillips told Dowden: “Right now we don’t quite know what Tory Party we’re being asked to vote for. “Is it the old school, genteel ‘one nation’ Conservative Party that I think most people associate with Oliver Dowden? “Or is it …

Lee Anderson Did Not Intend To Be Islamophobic, Says Oliver Dowden

Lee Anderson was not “intending” to be Islamophobic when he claimed that “Islamists” have “got control of” Sadiq Khan, according to Oliver Dowden. The deputy prime minister also revealed that Anderson would not have been stripped of the Tory whip if he had apologised. Anderson, former Tory deputy chairman was suspended from the Conservative Party yesterday after he failed to say sorry for his comments. Anderson also said the Labour mayor of London had “given our capital city away to his mates” in an interview on GB News. His comments – a reference to the pro-Palestine marches which have taken place in London in recent months – provoked a furious backlash, including from senior Tories. Appearing on the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday programme, Dowden said Rishi Sunak had been right to remove the Tory whip after Anderson failed to say sorry. But the deputy prime minister then appeared to defend the Ashfield MP by suggesting he had simply mis-spoken. He said: “Words matter, he didn’t choose his words correctly, and having failed to apologise …
