The 30-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers star took to Instagram on Saturday (December 28) to share a sweet post about expanding his family. His picture included a snap of a pink onesie, next to a pair of white baby sneakers and an ultrasound, which had the emoji of a baby face covering it. Ohtani and his wife’s dog, Decoy, also posed for the picture. “Can’t wait for the little rookie to join our family soon!” the MLB star wrote in the caption. The soon-to-be newborn will be Ohtani and Tanaka’s first child. While the couple have opted to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, Ohtani did reveal in February that …

With more gambling cases likely, Ohtani debacle is a lesson to MLB

With more gambling cases likely, Ohtani debacle is a lesson to MLB

Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter has pleaded guilty to stealing millions from him to feed a sports gambling habit. The man who took Ippei Mizuhara’s bets entered a guilty plea to running an illegal bookmaking operation. Major League Baseball has closed its investigation into the matter. And the Dodgers are delighted that Ohtani is putting up Hall of Fame numbers at the plate. But the federal criminal probe that targeted Mizuhara and Mathew Bowyer, his Orange County-based bookmaker — and cleared Ohtani of any wrongdoing — is ongoing, even as MLB has been forced to deal with more forbidden gambling. In Bowyer’s plea agreement, prosecutors allege that two current or former ballplayers placed bets with him. In the meantime, MLB banned another player for life and suspended four others after finding they bet on baseball, an offense that has been considered a mortal threat to the game since the Black Sox scandal of 1919. Shohei Ohtani has sweeping Dodgers dreaming of a different October

Shohei Ohtani has sweeping Dodgers dreaming of a different October

This wasn’t October. This can’t be confused with October. This has nothing to do with October. Yet make no mistake, the Dodgers’ weekend sweep of the Atlanta Braves at a rollicking Dodger Stadium was a fair predictor of an entirely different sort of October. An October with Shohei Ohtani. Goodness, the imagination soars, like a 464-foot blast into the lunging grasps of the pavilion partiers. My, the possibilities seem endless, like a 412-foot rocket that disappears over the center-field fence. Ohtani authored both moments during Sunday’s 5-1 sweeping victory, once again leaving witnesses searching for adjectives. “He just keeps doing things that we haven’t seen before,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Leading this team to its first full-season title in 36 years would qualify as something else few have seen before, wouldn’t it? Heavens, the potential is enormous. Ohtani, who was elsewhere while the Dodgers were failing in 10 of their previous 11 postseasons, filled his first playoff atmosphere here with ohhs and ahhs and oh yeahs. Ohh, he wrecked the pitching staff of the …

Shohei Ohtani hits two homers as Dodgers sweep the Braves

Shohei Ohtani hits two homers as Dodgers sweep the Braves

Dave Roberts seemed a little conflicted before Sunday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves in Dodger Stadium. The manager didn’t want to put too much emphasis on an early-May series against a potential playoff opponent, saying, “I just want to win as many games as we can,” but as he sized up a “great” trip in which the Dodgers won seven of nine games and a homestand that began with two wins over the Braves, he changed his tune. “It’s time to get greedy,” Roberts said, “so, yeah, we’re trying to sweep them.” The gluttonous Dodgers did just that, riding a strong start by left-hander James Paxton, a pair of bookend home runs by Shohei Ohtani and a two-run shot by Teoscar Hernández to a 5-1 victory that completed a three-game sweep of the Braves before a crowd of 52,733. “It was Cinco de Mayo, it was sold out, the fans were great … it was good to see our guys play to the level and energy that the fans had this whole series,” Roberts …

Inside the day Shohei Ohtani did not fly to Toronto

Inside the day Shohei Ohtani did not fly to Toronto

TORONTO —  It all started with a tweet. Two of them, actually. On Dec. 8 last year, during a Friday afternoon in the thick of MLB’s offseason, Toronto-based freelance photographer — and proud Blue Jays fan — Carlos Osorio was scrolling through X (formerly Twitter) when he saw a flurry of social media speculation centered on Shohei Ohtani. It began with one post tracking a private jet flying from Orange County to Toronto; one that online sleuths deduced must have been taking Ohtani to meet — or sign — with the Blue Jays, a known finalist in the sweepstakes for the free-agent star. Then came apparent confirmation from an MLB Network reporter, who asserted that “Shohei Ohtani is en route to Toronto today,” citing multiple unspecified sources. Sources: Shohei Ohtani is en route to Toronto today. A representative of his agency, CAA, would not comment when asked about Ohtani’s travel plans. At this hour, Ohtani does not have a signed agreement with any @MLB team. @MLBNetwork — Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) December 8, 2023 With his curiosity …

He achieved his first feats with the Californian Los Angeles Dodgers franchise on Wednesday, March 20, against the San Diego Padres at Seoul’s Gocheok Skydome, where the American professional baseball league, known as the MLB, kicked off its season. How the saga of Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter unfolded — and why it’s not over

How the saga of Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter unfolded — and why it’s not over

The tip arrived two weeks ago, and it threatened to engulf Major League Baseball’s biggest star, Shohei Ohtani, in scandal. The name of the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger and pitcher had surfaced in a federal investigation of illegal sports gambling — millions of dollars in payments were allegedly made from his bank account to an illicit bookmaker. As The Times investigated the tip and began to assemble a story, Ohtani’s representatives scrambled behind the scenes to head it off. The result was a series of shifting accounts of how Ohtani’s name was raised as part of the investigation, with each version presenting him as not being involved in any wrongdoing. And that effort continued after The Times broke the story of the probe. It culminated Monday in a news conference by Ohtani at Dodger Stadium, and what the ballplayer, the Dodgers and Major League Baseball had hoped would put the matter to rest. It didn’t. That’s because Ohtani’s claims — that his interpreter stole millions of dollars from him to pay a bookmaker and that …

Ohtani scandal looms over baseball ahead of opening day

Ohtani scandal looms over baseball ahead of opening day

LOS ANGELES: Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers take centre stage on Thursday (Mar 28) as Major League Baseball’s new season gets underway on US soil against the backdrop of a gambling scandal that has engulfed its brightest star. When the Dodgers won the race to sign Japanese superstar Ohtani last December on a lavish US$700 million deal — the richest contract in the history of North American sport — the move was widely hailed as a blockbuster coup. A two-time American League Most Valuable Player, Ohtani’s once-in-a-generation combination of elite pitching and hitting has seen him compared to the legendary Babe Ruth since his arrival in the major leagues in 2018. The skyrocketing euphoria amongst Dodgers fans was given another jolt when the team acquired pitchers Tyler Glasnow and Ohtani’s highly rated Japan team-mate Yoshinobu Yamamoto, further proof that the franchise is determined to make a serious run at the World Series. But fast-forward three months and some of the breathless giddiness that greeted the Dodgers’ December shopping spree has dissipated as they …
