A prison workshop instructor has pleaded guilty to engaging in an “inappropriate relationship” with Zara Aleena’s murderer. Hayley Jones, 33, appeared at Woolwich Crown Court, where she admitted misconduct in a public office between 6 March and 7 April 2023 while she was working at Belmarsh prison. The charge states her “inappropriate relationship” with Jordan McSweeney “amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust”. McSweeney, 31, is serving a life sentence for the murder of 35-year-old law graduate Ms Aleena, who was killed as she walked home from a night out in Ilford, east London. Boston Globe paywall strategy: Chief commercial officer interview

Boston Globe office. Picture: Craig F Walke Like so many regional media brands, the Boston Globe nearly went out of business in 2009 after the financial crash. Today it stands out as an exemplar of how journalism can not just survive but thrive in the digital age. In the latest Press Gazette Future of Media Explained podcast, the title’s chief commercial officer Kayvan Salmanpour explained how the multi-Pulitzer Prize-winning title carried off an evolution many other regional publishers have struggled to replicate. The episode, which was sponsored by digital publishing platform Quintype, also featured insight from that company’s vice president of international partnerships Chad Hussain. Privately-owned Boston Globe Media does not publish financial results but today has close to 1,000 employees, with 261,000 digital subscriptions and 75,000 in print. London’s main news publisher, the Standard, is believed to have somewhere between 100-150 staff left after moving to free weekly publication last month and it has made seven straight years of losses. The reported GDP of the greater Boston area (at around $500bn) is only slightly …

Sharon Beshenivsky: Piran Ditta Khan jailed for life for murdering police officer | UK News

The mastermind of an armed robbery in which PC Sharon Beshenivsky was shot dead in 2005 has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 40 years. Piran Ditta Khan, 75, was last month found guilty of murdering the West Yorkshire Police officer, who was shot at point-blank range at Universal Express travel agent in Morley Street, Bradford. Prosecutors said that although Khan was not one of the three smartly dressed men who carried out the raid, he had played a “pivotal” role and was guilty of murder “as surely as if he pulled the trigger on that pistol himself”. PC Beshenivsky, 38 – who had only been a police officer for nine months – and colleague PC Teresa Milburn, then 37, were both unarmed when they responded to an alarm call and were shot in the chest on 18 November 2005. Former Corrections Officer Sentenced to 4 Years for Using Excessive Force

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A former Tennessee Department of Corrections officer has been sentenced to four years in prison for using excessive force on an inmate and trying to cover it up, the Justice Department said. Javian Griffin, 38, received the sentence Monday, the agency said in a statement. The former tactical officer at Northwest Correctional Complex pleaded guilty in October to punching the inmate in the head without justification and breaking his jaw. The inmate did not resist or pose a threat and Griffin wrote a false report about it, court documents said. “No correctional officer is above the law,” U.S. Attorney Kevin G. Ritz said. “This office’s National Security and Civil Rights Unit will continue to prioritize the prosecution of public employees who violate the civil rights of others.” A co-defendant was sentenced in February to 15 months in prison for assisting with the cover-up by writing a false report, the agency said. Atlanta to Pay $3.8 Million to Family of Church Deacon Who Died in Struggle With Officer

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta City Council has agreed to pay $3.8 million to settle a lawsuit by the family of a church deacon who died in a struggle with a city police officer following a minor car crash. Deacon Johnny Hollman’s family sued the the city, Officer Kiran Kimbrough and Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum in January, alleging Kimbrough used excessive force after the 62-year-old refused to sign a citation finding him at fault for the crash. An attorney for Kimbrough has said Hollman resisted arrest and Kimbrough acted lawfully when he deployed his stun gun and used force. The city council, without comment, unanimously approved the settlement at its regular meeting on Monday. An attorney for Hollman’s family, Mawuli Davis, issued a statement saying the settlement allows the family to “focus on healing from the devastating and senseless loss of their beloved father.” Hollman’s daughter, Arnitra, expressed gratitude to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the city council. My brother, Officer Brian Sicknick, died after January 6. Politics continued to pull my family apart

My brother, Officer Brian Sicknick, died after January 6. Politics continued to pull my family apart

My brother, United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, collapsed after defending the Capitol Building and everyone in it from pro-Trump insurrectionists on January 6, 2021, and died in the hospital the following day. He suffered two strokes, we learned. In the aftermath of his death, I thought my family would be united in our grief. I didn’t see until later that politics — some of the same on display at the Capitol the day Brian reported for what would be his last shift — were already dividing us. After the Medical Examiner finally released his remains for burial, my family returned to Washington, D.C., to pay our final respects to my kid brother. Brian was one of the few American citizens to lay in honor at the United States Capitol Rotunda, the same building he gave his life to protect. After the public services, we met President Biden, who expressed heartfelt condolences for our loss. The President and his wife came without the press in tow, without photographers. Several other high-ranking officials also quietly …

The department announced Friday on social media that Lt. James Waller, a 22-year veteran of the Conroe Police Department, died at a hospital where he was taken after the tornado struck his home in Trinity. “After multiple surgeries, physicians determined that his injuries were too great to sustain life,” the post stated. “His family members were able to spend time with him prior to his passing.” The department said Waller and his wife were at home when the tornado struck Sunday. His wife was also injured, but survived, according to the police department. The National Weather Service rated the tornado as an EF1 with wind speeds of about 100 mph (161 kph) and said it was on the ground for just more than 0.25 miles (0.40 kilometers) for one to two minutes. Police officer pleads guilty to two terror offences over pro-Hamas WhatsApp messages | UK News

A West Yorkshire police officer has pleaded guilty to two terror offences over messages he shared on WhatsApp. PC Mohammed Adil, who is based in Calderdale and is on suspension, admitted two counts of publishing an image in support of banned organisation Hamas at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. The 26-year-old shared the messages on his WhatsApp stories in October and November last year – weeks after the Hamas attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw another 250 being taken hostage. They showed a Hamas fighter wearing a Hamas headband, prosecutor Bridget Fitzpatrick told the court. The image posted on 31 October had writing on it saying: “Today is the time for the Palestinian people to rise, set their paths straight and establish an independent Palestinian state.” It was said to be a quote from the leader of Hamas’s military wing, Mohammed Deif. The image posted on 4 November had another message on it, saying: “We will hold accountable all those who occupied our lands and Allah will hold accountable all those who …
