Articles cover the Republican politicians who bent easily to Trump’s will, and the threats that a second Trump term poses, with reporting by Tim Alberta, Anne Applebaum, Mark Leibovich, Helen Lewis, Elaina Plott Calabro, Hanna Rosin, and Sarah Zhang. Stories are publishing this week and next; please reach out with any questions or requests to interview The Atlantic’s writers on their reporting. On the cover: The illustrator Justin Metz borrowed the visual language of old Ray Bradbury and Stephen King paperbacks to portray a circus wagon on its ominous approach to a defiled Capitol. Something Wicked This Way Comes, Bradbury’s 1962 masterpiece, was a particular inspiration. We believe this to be the first cover bearing no headline or typography in The Atlantic’s 167-year history. Report: Apple Intelligence Delayed to iOS 18.1 in October

Report: Apple Intelligence Delayed to iOS 18.1 in October

Apple Intelligence will miss its initial expected launch date to give Apple more time to fix bugs, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports. According to individuals with knowledge about Apple’s plans, the company now plans to start rolling out Apple Intelligence in software updates by October, arriving several weeks after the launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This means that Apple Intelligence will now effectively be split out of the initial launch of the new software updates. The reason for the delay is said to be concern about the stability of Apple Intelligence features and need for developers to have sufficient testing time. Apple Intelligence will still be made available to software developers for the first time as soon as next week with the first betas of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1, which would be extremely unusual as the company does not normally release previews of follow-up software updates until the first version has been released. Gurman notes that the new release strategy for Apple Intelligence means that the iPhone 16 lineup will likely …

Tunisian President Saied says he will seek re-election in October | Elections News

As president runs for new term, critics say credible polls can’t be held unless jailed opposition politicians are freed. Tunisian President Kais Saied has said that he will seek a new five-year term in an election set for October. Saied’s announcement comes as the opposition says fair and credible elections cannot be held unless imprisoned politicians are released and the media is allowed to do its job without pressure from the government. “I officially announce my candidacy for the October 6 presidential election in order to keep up the fight in the battle for national liberation,” Saied, who has ruled by decree since suspending parliament in July 2021, said on Friday in a video released by his office. Speaking from the southern region of Tataouine, the 66-year-old said he was answering the “country’s sacred call” which left him no choice but to run for a second term. In July, Saied called the presidential vote for October 6. Several potential challengers who had announced their candidacy are either in prison or being prosecuted. In his announcement, …

Shohei Ohtani has sweeping Dodgers dreaming of a different October

Shohei Ohtani has sweeping Dodgers dreaming of a different October

This wasn’t October. This can’t be confused with October. This has nothing to do with October. Yet make no mistake, the Dodgers’ weekend sweep of the Atlanta Braves at a rollicking Dodger Stadium was a fair predictor of an entirely different sort of October. An October with Shohei Ohtani. Goodness, the imagination soars, like a 464-foot blast into the lunging grasps of the pavilion partiers. My, the possibilities seem endless, like a 412-foot rocket that disappears over the center-field fence. Ohtani authored both moments during Sunday’s 5-1 sweeping victory, once again leaving witnesses searching for adjectives. “He just keeps doing things that we haven’t seen before,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Leading this team to its first full-season title in 36 years would qualify as something else few have seen before, wouldn’t it? Heavens, the potential is enormous. Ohtani, who was elsewhere while the Dodgers were failing in 10 of their previous 11 postseasons, filled his first playoff atmosphere here with ohhs and ahhs and oh yeahs. Ohh, he wrecked the pitching staff of the …

French police had questioned the 75-year-old screen legend earlier over allegations by two women that he assaulted them – one on a film set in 2021 and the other on another shoot in 2014, a source close to the case said, confirming a report by the BFMTV news channel. The first woman accuses him of having assaulted her when she was a member of the crew on the 2022 feature film Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters). French actor Gerard Depardieu will be tried over sexual assault allegations, the Paris public prosecutor has said. The 75-year-old actor, who previously has denied any wrongdoing, was detained for questioning by police in Paris for several hours earlier on Monday. His lawyer, Christian Saint-Palais, later declined to comment to reporters other than to say that the actor was no longer in custody. The Paris public prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the actor has been “summoned to appear before the criminal court” after the questioning. A trial will start in October “for sexual assaults likely to have been committed in September 2021” against “two victims, on the set of the film ‘The Green Shutters,’ ” the statement said. The head of Israeli military intelligence has resigned over the failures surrounding Hamas’ unprecedented October 7 attack. Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva becomes the first senior figure to step down over his role in the deadliest assault in Israel’s history. His resignation could set the stage for more resignations among Israel’s top security brass over Hamas’ attack, when militants blasted through Israel’s border defenses, rampaged through Israeli communities unchallenged for hours and killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, while taking roughly 250 hostages into Gaza. That attack set off the war against Hamas in Gaza, now in its seventh month. My parents were taken hostage on 7 October. This Passover, we pray for leaders who bring dignity and peace | Sharone Lifschitz

Passover has an intensity I have always cherished. I love the sense of community, family, tradition, inclusivity and togetherness. We mark it with a ceremonial meal – the Seder – with rituals, special foods and a communal reading of the story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. In London, we invite a joyous array of guests, Jewish and not Jewish, and find creative ways to interpret the story of the path to freedom. Each year we are encouraged to reflect: “In each and every generation a person is obliged to regard himself as if he had come out of Egypt.” This line from the Haggadah asks us to empathise with the freed Hebrew slaves, to put ourselves in their shoes. It is the thread that binds our generation to all those who came before us. This year, in the midst of our generation’s bloodiest war, we must also put ourselves in the bare feet and ripped pyjamas of the hostages, brutally snatched from their homes in Israel to the underground tunnels of Gaza, and those …
