Notable Artists, Dealers, and Collectors Who Died

Notable Artists, Dealers, and Collectors Who Died

There were times in 2024 when it felt as though an entire chapter of art history was being lost. Crack open a modern art textbook, and note how many figures from the section on Minimalism died this year alone: Frank Stella, Carl Andre, Richard Serra. Stella and Serra’s deaths, plus those of artists working at the same time like Faith Ringgold and Jackie Winsor, recently moved critic Barry Schwabsky to ask if an entire New York scene had died this year as well. It wasn’t just artists in New York who died this year, of course. Giants of other countries also passed: the German sculptor Rebecca Horn, the Austrian performance artist Günter Brus, the Saudi Arabian painter Safeya Binzagr, the Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe. And it wasn’t just artists, either. Dealers Barbara Gladstone and Pierre Levai died this year, along with collectors Rosa de la Cruz and Leonard Riggio, curator Kasper König, and art historian David Anfam. Below, a look back at some of the most notable art-world figures who died in 2024. Read more …

7 Notable Kings of Israel and Judah From the Bible

7 Notable Kings of Israel and Judah From the Bible

According to the Bible, God never intended for Israel to be a monarchy. God warned the people of Israel through his prophet Samuel not to be like other nations and desire a king, but they would not take heed. The nation of Israel opted for a monarchy, and their choice set in motion a series of events that would not only see the Kingdom of Israel split in two but also war against one another.   The northern Kingdom of Israel consisted of ten of the original tribes of Israel which were sent into exile by the Assyrians. Later, the Southern Kingdom, made up of Judah and Benjamin, also went into exile when the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem, sacked it, and destroyed the Temple. Among the kings of Israel and Judah, some were good, and others were bad. So, who were the key kings of Israel and Judah?   1. Saul Death of King Saul, by Elie Marcuse, 1848. How do dogs anticipate actions? Scientists find notable differences from primates

New eye-tracking research sheds light on how dogs process and predict the actions of both human and non-human agents, demonstrating that they prioritize the location of an action over the identity of the object involved. This suggests a unique aspect of canine social cognition, where spatial information plays a crucial role in their understanding of others’ behaviors. The findings were published in the journal Animal Cognition. Previous research has suggested that humans use their own motor experiences to interpret other people’s movements. This ability develops early in life and is seen in infants and apes. For instance, human infants and apes have been shown to anticipate that an agent will continue to interact with the same object, even if its location changes, suggesting a strong object-oriented approach in their action understanding. However, dogs present an interesting case study due to their significant evolutionary and developmental differences from humans and apes. Despite their inability to replicate many human actions due to anatomical differences, dogs have a rich history of co-evolution with humans, making them keen observers …

Emily Ratajkowski just wore a plunging neckline gown in spring’s most notable hue

As we all know, model, mother and author Emily Ratajkowski is the queen of street-style dressing, often championing new trends, styling old wardrobe favourites and everything in between while on her daily hot girl walks in The Big Apple. Just yesterday the Jacquemus muse posted a series of images to her 29.9 million Instagram followers, swapping out her model off-duty baby tee and low-rise shorts for an opulent silk gown in the most enviable butter-yellow shade.  © Instagram / @emrataHer dazzling gown fit her like a glove The silky yellow dress in question was tailored to Emily’s killer physique and fit like an absolute glove. Em decided to pair her lower-than-low neckline ensemble with a pair of opulent twinkling crystal earrings and an oversized precious stone ring. For glam, the Victoria’s Secret model spiced things up with a voluminous side-part hairstyle complete with tapered bangs. She matched her dark brunette locks to her lip shade, emphasising her natural pout with a dark brown-hued liner.  © Instagram / @emrataEm really channelled her inner Marilyn Monroe lastnight …

Notable Capital’s Hans Tung on the state of VC and the upside to down rounds

Notable Capital’s Hans Tung on the state of VC and the upside to down rounds

To some investors, “down round” is a dirty phrase, but not to Notable Capital’s Hans Tung. Hans is a managing partner at Notable Capital, formerly GGV Capital, a venture firm focusing on investments in the U.S., Latin America, Israel, and Europe. Hans, whose portfolio includes the likes of Airbnb, StockX and Slack, sat down with TechCrunch’s Equity podcast to discuss the overall state of venture and why he still believes down rounds can make a lot of sense. Per Hans, “An IPO is actually just a milestone, not the end game. An IPO is the beginning of public investors being along for the ride. So when you think in longer-term valuations, up or down temporarily doesn’t matter as much as generating a big outcome at the end.” It’s worth noting that by September 2023, nearly 11% of the year’s VC deals were down rounds, according to PitchBook data. Hans also let us know why he’s still bullish on fintech, and what sectors in the fintech space have him especially psyched. Of course, we dug into recent …

Eufy’s newest robot vacuum can do just about anything – with one notable flaw

Eufy’s newest robot vacuum can do just about anything – with one notable flaw

The Eufy S1 Pro promises a long list of features. Maria Diaz/ZDNET ZDNET’s key takeaways The Eufy S1 Pro just launched on Kickstarter at $1,499.  This robot vacuum has it all, including a mop roller that washes itself while cleaning your floors, ensuring only fresh water is used while mopping. The S1 Pro is very loud when it’s self-emptying and self-washing, the dock is taller than most, and it uses ozone to disinfect its mop roller. Robot vacuum and mop combination devices seem to be getting better every day. Having previously used robot mops that drag a dirty microfiber cloth all over your floor, I used to find rotating mop pads innovative. But then came the self-cleaning robot mops with separate tanks for clean and dirty water, ensuring your floors are cleaned only with fresh water. Also: I’ve tested 25+ robot vacuum mops. These are my favorites The Eufy S1 Pro has this kind of mop, and it’s the most advanced and high-end robot vacuum and mop I’ve tested. It’s the kind of device that …

The Garrick Club’s notable members – in pictures | Society

The Garrick Club has been under pressure to change its rules to allow female members. After years of debate, and accusations that it is an elite and misogynistic institution, change may finally happen later this year when its current members are likely to be asked to vote again on the issue. A Guardian investigation into those who will help decide on this issue reveals a host of people in public life who are members of the club – from the head of the civil service to the chief of MI6, and the deputy prime minister to high court judges. A list of some of the most prominent members of the men-only Garrick reveals the club’s central position as a bulwark of the British establishment, featuring scores of leading lawyers, heads of publicly funded arts institutions and King Charles. We approached all of those pictured for comment. Most declined to do so, but we have included responses from those who did Source link
