Measles outbreak kills at least 42 people in northeast Nigeria | Health News

The deaths were recorded out of nearly 200 suspected measles cases in the state of Adamawa, official says. At least 42 people have died from a measles outbreak in a little more than a week in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Adamawa, the state’s health commissioner says. Felix Tangwami said on Friday that the measles outbreak had mostly affected two local government areas where nearly 200 suspected cases were identified. “Measles vaccines have been released to those areas and our field teams are containing the situation,” he said at a media briefing. Measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus that mostly affects children under the age of five. It can be prevented by two doses of vaccine. Its early symptoms include high fever, cough and runny nose. It also often causes rashes and bumps all over the body of the patient. More than 50 million measles deaths have been averted through vaccinations since 2000, according to the World Health Organization. Widespread insecurity in many northern Nigerian states is often blamed for disruptions in vaccination campaigns, leaving …

Some Voters in Northeast India Go Back to the Polls After Violence Disrupts First Day of Election

GUWAHATI, India (AP) — Voters at a handful polling places in a northeastern Indian state went back to the polls amid tight security on Monday after violence disrupted the vote last week. Indian election authorities voided the results at 11 of Manipur state’s nearly 3,000 polling stations after armed men damaged election machines during the first day of voting in national elections on Friday. State officials said that at at least six of the stations, armed men broke the electronic voting machines which citizens use to cast their ballots. Manipur has been wracked by ethnic violence between the state’s two dominant ethnic groups since May 2023. Around 200 people have been killed and over 60,000 displaced as mobs have rampaged through villages and torched houses. The unrest broke out when Christian Kukis protested a demand by the mostly Hindu Meiteis for a special status that would let them buy land in hills that populated by Kukis and other tribal groups. The clashes have persisted despite the army’s presence in Manipur, a state of 3.7 million …

‘Awful’: climate crisis threatens to sink historic north-east golf club | Northumberland

For most golfers, the most damage a furious wind can do is to your handicap – and, if you are really unfortunate, your car windshield. But visitors to Alnmouth village golf club in Northumberland have to contend with the prospect of storms and rising sea levels consigning the oldest nine-hole links course in the country to history. There are fears that the historic golfing attraction will disappear as a result of coastal erosion, the undefended area closest to the sea near the fifth hole is especially at risk. “I don’t think in another 100 years we will be playing golf here, I think it’s changed that much in the last 30 years,” said the club secretary Ian Simpson, who has been a member for more than a decade. Ian Simpson, the Alnmouth club secretary, suggests rock armour, which is used in harbours, may solve the issue. Photograph: Gary Calton/The Observer Simpson’s daughter, Emelia, who is club manager, added: “No one wants to play on an eight-hole golf course.” Built in 1869 by the Scottish golfer …

RMT backs independent candidate Jamie Driscoll for north-east mayor | Mayoral elections

RMT backs independent candidate Jamie Driscoll for north-east mayor | Mayoral elections

The RMT union has endorsed the independent candidate Jamie Driscoll in the north-east mayoral election, after Driscoll was barred from standing for Labour in the race. The union said it was giving £10,000 to Driscoll’s campaign. Driscoll is currently the mayor of the North of Tyne combined authority, which is being integrated into the new North East combined authority. Mick Lynch, the RMT’s general secretary, said that while the union backed Labour in national politics, Driscoll would be “a strong voice that will put the north-east first, whatever government is in power”. The endorsement adds to Labour headaches in the mayoral race since Driscoll was barred last year from standing for the party in the new mayoral contest – a decision condemned by some in Labour as opaque and overly factional. Driscoll responded to the ban by announcing he would run as an independent, and has since raised nearly £150,000 in donations via a crowdfunding website. Lynch said: “Jamie has been a solid ally of the RMT and the wider trade union movement for many …

The Guardian view on the glories of the north-east: deserving of a wider audience | Editorial

Across the Farne Islands, the spring chorus is once again under way. After wintering on the open seas, thousands of puffins are making their annual journey to England’s north-east coast to nest and breed, jostling for space with vocal kittiwakes, razorbills, eider ducks, shags and Arctic terns. Happily, tourists will be able to witness closeup one of the glories of Britain’s natural landscape for the first time since 2022. This week, the world-renowned seabird sanctuary welcomed the public back, after an outbreak of bird flu led to a temporary ban on visitors. The reopening has given local boat tour operators a timely boost, ahead of the summer. But on Easter bank holiday weekend, the news is also a reminder of how much the UK’s most overlooked tourist destination has to offer its visitors. The charm of the north-east’s vast sandy beaches and rugged coastline, and the splendour of Hadrian’s Wall, Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne are well known. Inland, the Beamish social history museum is one of the finest and most innovative in Europe, and one …

Russia’s forces turn their focus on Ukraine’s northeast in what may be an ambitious new push

Russia’s forces turn their focus on Ukraine’s northeast in what may be an ambitious new push

KYIV, Ukraine —  Russian forces are probing Ukrainian defenses for weak points in the country’s northeast, an official said Thursday, an area where analysts believe the Kremlin seeks to build on its recent success in taking a key city by mounting an ambitious four-pronged offensive to break through the front line. Russia overwhelmed Ukraine’s army in Adviidka, a strategic eastern city, where it brought to bear its significant battlefield advantage in men, aircraft and artillery. Emboldened by its first major triumph in the war in nine months, Moscow appears determined to leverage its superiority as it shifts its economy onto a war footing. Russian President Vladimir Putin took a co-pilot’s seat to fly in a Tu-160M strategic bomber Thursday after visiting an aircraft manufacturing plant in Kazan, a city east of Moscow. Kyiv officials have pleaded with Ukraine’s Western partners to accelerate delivery of military aid so its forces can hold out against the onslaught. The front line running more than 600 miles across eastern and southern Ukraine has not shifted much in the run-up to …
