Nintendo has opened or is opening its theme parks in Hollywood, Osaka, Orlando (2025) and Singapore (TBD). We know as gamers ourselves, this is an exciting way to engage through play with the GamesBeat content you have already come to love. Start playing games here.  As both a mystery game fan and a Person in the Games Industry, I would like to hereby dub 2024 the Year of the Mystery Game. We’ve gotten a new Nancy Drew game, two Ace Attorney collections (which I’m hoping against all odds means we might get a new game at some point in the future), a Golden Idol sequel and now Nintendo has announced it’s making a new Famicom Detective Club game. Specifically, the game is called Emio — The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, and it launches on August 29. The Emio reveal was especially enjoyable for me, as I hadn’t played the Famicom Detective Club games before Nintendo remastered the duology for Switch in 2021. The fact that they managed to revive such an old franchise to the …

New female-led Zelda game announced by Nintendo to surprise of fans | The Legend of Zelda

Nintendo surprised fans yesterday by announcing a new chapter in its 40-year-old Zelda saga, one of the Japanese video game titan’s biggest franchises. During an event broadcast on the web, the firm said The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is scheduled for release on the Switch console on 26 September. Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Zelda series, said on a webcast that fans would be able to play as Princess Zelda herself rather than the elf-like warrior Link – a first for an official entry into the game’s canon. “This time around Link has vanished and it’s up to Princess Zelda to step into the protagonist’s role,” Aonuma said. Each new chapter of Zelda is eagerly awaited by fans – the franchise has racked up well over 140 million sales since it began in 1986. Last year’s edition, Tears of the Kingdom, sold 10 million copies in just three days. Nintendo showed some gameplay from the new title during the webcast, revealing cartoon-style graphics similar to 2019’s Link’s Awakening rather than the sleek realism …

It’s Possible to Hack ‘Tetris’ From Inside the Game Itself

It’s Possible to Hack ‘Tetris’ From Inside the Game Itself

Earlier this year, we shared the story of how a classic NES Tetris player hit the game’s “kill screen” for the first time, activating a crash after an incredible 40-minute, 1,511-line performance. Now, some players are using that kill screen—and some complicated memory manipulation it enables—to code new behaviors into versions of Tetris running on unmodified hardware and cartridges. We’ve covered similar “arbitrary code execution” glitches in games like Super Mario World, Paper Mario, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the past. And the basic method for introducing outside code into NES Tetris has been publicly theorized since at least 2021 when players were investigating the game’s decompiled code. (HydrantDude, who has gone deep on Tetris crashes in the past, also says the community has long had a privately known method for how to take full control of Tetris‘ RAM.) But a recent video from Displaced Gamers takes the idea from private theory to public execution, going into painstaking detail on how to get NES Tetris to start reading the game’s high-score …

Switch 2 Will Be Officially Announced Before Next April, Nintendo Says

After plenty of rumors about the Switch 2, Nintendo has given its clearest signal yet that another console is coming. The company pledged to announce its follow-up to the 7-year-old Nintendo Switch in the next year.  The news comes after Nintendo released financial results from its last fiscal year, which ended March 31. In a post on X, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the company would introduce the successor to the Switch within the next fiscal year — in other words, between now and the end of March 2025. Nintendo didn’t release any additional details about the console, or even whether it would retain the Switch’s branding. The only hint at a timeline was in the remainder of Furukawa’s post, which noted that it’s been nine years since March 2015 and the initial reveal of the original Switch, which was then released two years later.  Furukawa also noted that further details wouldn’t be coming in the next Nintendo Direct product showcase, which is scheduled for June and will cover some games coming to the …
