Riot has finally launched Vanguard to overwhelmingly negative response from players

Riot Games has launched its anti-cheat software Vanguard to an overwhelmingly negative response, including players claiming that it is bricking their PCs. Vanguard is Riot’s custom anti-cheat software, designed to ensure competitive League of Legends is free of cheating. It consists of a client that runs alongside League of Legends and a kernel mode driver. Riot is in the habit of using the League of Legends subreddit to collect bug reports from players as well as respond to questions and issues. Currently, the thread for reporting bugs introduced by patch 14.9 (which added Vanguard) has over 1,100 comments from frustrated League fans. Their other online game, Valorant, has also been affected. “I honestly can’t play Valo[rant] because of Vanguard, it legit blue screened my computer multiple times and caused a bunch of my programs to crash,” said one user on X. One League of Legends creator claimed he had to remove the CMOS battery to resolve an issue caused by Vanguard. Update: after taking out CMOS battery and resetting battery was able to finally get …

USDA says ground beef tests negative for bird flu virus

USDA says ground beef tests negative for bird flu virus

The Department of Agriculture said on Wednesday that all the ground beef samples sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories for PCR testing were negative for the H5N1 bird flu virus. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service collected 30 samples of ground beef from retail outlets in the states with dairy cattle herds that had tested positive for H5N1 at the time of sample collection. “NVSL reported that all samples tested negative for H5N1. These results reaffirm that the meat supply is safe,” the USDA added. Federal authorities have been working to confirm the safety of milk and meat products after the detection of H5N1 in 34 dairy cattle herds across nine states since the end of March. Additionally, one case has been confirmed in a person in Texas. The Food and Drug Administration said preliminary results of tests on additional dairy products show pasteurization inactivates the bird flu virus. Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have said the overall public health risk is low, but is higher for those …

Tiger Woods reveals ‘negative’ reason daughter Sam isn’t interested in playing golf with him

Song lyrics have become simpler, more negative, and more self-focused over time

Song lyrics have become simpler, more negative, and more self-focused over time

Recent research published in Scientific Reports explores how English lyrics in popular Western music have evolved over the last fifty years across five major genres. The study reveals that popular music lyrics have simplified in both structure and vocabulary. Furthermore, songs have grown more personal and emotionally negative over time. Previous research has highlighted how musical lyrics can influence emotions, foster social connections, and even shape cultural identities. These studies have shown that lyrics can act as a barometer for societal mood, reflecting changes in attitudes, values, and social norms. For instance, an increase in negative emotional content in lyrics might mirror rising societal tensions or cultural shifts towards more introspective or confrontational themes. Furthermore, music serves various psychological and social functions, from regulating emotions to facilitating communication among groups. This makes the study of lyrical content particularly relevant for psychologists, sociologists, and cultural historians interested in the interplay between art and human behavior. The new study aimed to build on existing studies by using a larger dataset and more nuanced analytical techniques to explore …

California Now Has So Much Solar Power That Electricity Prices Are Going Negative During the Day

“We drastically underestimated the speed at which residential solar was going to come in.” Sun Police California, which gets over a quarter of its electricity from solar, is generating more power than it knows what to do with. On sunny days, there’s now so much solar energy being supplied that electricity prices can dip into the negative, The Washington Post reports — a preview of the economic and infrastructural problems that renewables will have to navigate. “These are not insurmountable challenges,” Michelle Davis at consulting firm Wood Mackenzie Power and Renewables, told the WaPo. “But they are challenges that a lot of grid operators have never had to deal with.” Ray Lotta Solar power, unlike energy from fossil fuels, isn’t “dispatchable,” meaning that electricity grid operators can’t control — or even necessarily predict — how much energy it supplies. This comes into play in what’s called “net load”: the total demand for electricity minus the energy supplied by solar and other renewables. What’s left over in that equation is the amount of power from conventional sources …

Older adults report novel situations as less negative

Older adults report novel situations as less negative

According to a new study published in Psychology & Aging, novel experiences cause greater emotional distress in younger adults compared to older adults, challenging age-related stereotypes. Novelty permeates everyday life, whether it’s new restaurants or the unfamiliarity of a first day at a new job. Such experiences can trigger uncertainties, which might lead to discomfort, or opportunities that facilitate personal growth. As we age, the impact of novelty on emotional well-being shifts, at times becoming misaligned with the goals and motivations of older adults. In this work, Li Chu and colleagues examined these age-related differences in emotional responses to novel situations. A total of 375 adults from the San Francisco Bay Area, between the ages 18 to 94, were included in this research. Participants were enrolled in the study during three different waves (1993, 1998, and 2004) and were selected based on their self-reported health being as good as or better than others their age. This criterion was important to ensure that health disparities did not skew the emotional data related to novel experiences. Each …

Relational Trauma: Why Am I So Negative?

Relational Trauma: Why Am I So Negative?

Part 1 of a two-part series. Let’s unpack a common question people who come from relational trauma backgrounds ask: “Why am I so negative?” Let me begin by saying that I have yet to meet someone from a relational trauma background who sees the world as “glass half full” versus “glass half empty.” If you do come from a relational trauma background and yet still have an overwhelmingly optimistic attitude, that’s amazing. But the rest of us—the majority of us who have experienced relational trauma—may live with a persistent sense of discontent and possibly a deeply ingrained negativity bias. Because of this, the question, “Why am I so negative?” is likely something we’ve asked ourselves or others have asked us many times over the years. It’s a question people have asked me before: “Why are you so negative?” When I was younger, that kind of question used to make me feel ashamed. Now, it makes me a little angry and self-protectively defensive. Look, developmental trauma is not an equal-opportunity affliction, nor are its impacts. Coming …

Lizzo says her ‘I QUIT’ announcement was not about making music, but ‘negative energy’

Lizzo clarified that her announcement last week where she said “I QUIT” was not in reference to making music. In a statement posted to her Instagram on Friday, the musician said she’s “constantly up against lies” being told about her and feels like the world doesn’t want her in it, ending it with “I didn’t sign up for this s*** — I QUIT.” Lizzo posted a video Tuesday clarifying what she meant by her previous statement. “I want to make this video because I just need to clarify, when I say ‘I quit,’ I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention. What I’m not gonna quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people,” she said. Lizzo went on to say she knows she’s not the only person “experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive.” “If I can just give one person the inspiration or motivation to stand up for themselves and say they quit letting negative people win, negative comments win, …
