Banksy Mural to Be Sold with the Building It’s Painted On

A Banksy mural is heading to auction early next year. The catch? The buyer must purchase the entire building upon which Well Hung Lover was painted by the anonymous street artist.   Banksy’s Well Hung Lover Heads to Auction Well Hung Lover by Banksy, 2006. Source: Adrian Langtry/CNN.   In 2006, Banksy painted Well Hung Lover on the side of a sexual health clinic in Bristol, England. It depicts a naked man hanging from an open window. Another man, dressed in a suit and standing next to a woman in underwear, looks out the window, seemingly unaware of his partner’s dangling lover. This Banksy mural is technically the United Kingdom’s first legal piece of street art after a survey by the Bristol City Council granted permission retrospectively. Well Hung Lover was defaced by a paintball gun in 2009, after which the City Council partially restored the mural. It was defaced again in 2018 with black spray paint.   The sexual health clinic has since relocated from the building with the Banksy mural. Now, Bristol real estate agent Hollis …

Banksy Mural Will to be Sold with the Building It is Painted on

A Banksy mural of a man hanging out of a bedroom window as he tries to evade his love rival is being sold at auction with the building it is painted on. Titled Well Hung Lover, it was painted on the wall of a sexual health clinic in Bristol, UK, in 2006. Banksy, who is from the city, said he wasn’t aware of the building’s coincidental use at the time. Real estate agent Hollis Morgan is auctioning the property – and therefore the artwork – with a new 250-year lease next year. The Grade II-listed Georgian building has five floors and is located close to Bristol Cathedral and the University of Bristol. A nightclub operates in the basement. Hollis Morgan is promoting the property’s potential to be converted into student apartments. As for the fate of the artwork, the real estate agent pointed to the fact that Bristol city council has no official policy on street art, no matter who it is by. “It is recognised that street art is created not as a permanent work of …

What makes an Italian? An olympic gold medal and a vandalised mural reopen debate about race and citizenship

What makes an Italian? An olympic gold medal and a vandalised mural reopen debate about race and citizenship

When Paola Egonu, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic games volleyball tournament, a dormant discussion in Italian politics was reignited. Egonu only [became an Italian citizen at the age of 14], after her father naturalised as Italian. Now a national hero, many felt her story should have been different and that the pathway to Italian citizenship should be made easier for the children of immigrants. After her win, a mural depicting Egonu performing her signature strike appeared outside the office of the Italian Olympic Committee. The artist gave it the title “Italianness”. Within 24 hours someone had painted over Paola’s skin with pink paint, leaving the title untouched. Such racist abuse hides a much harder question Italians have been grappling with for three decades: what makes someone Italian? The vandalised mural of Egonu. EPA This is not the first time a sports event has forced Italians to confront Italy’s inadequate citizenship law. When, in 2020, 14-year-old Great Nnachi made the highest ever pole-vaulting jump in the …

Maurizio Cattalan, Zoe Saldana join iconoclastic Vatican Biennale exhibition inside women’s prison

Maurizio Cattalan, Zoe Saldana join iconoclastic Vatican Biennale exhibition inside women’s prison

VENICE, Italy (AP) — A pair of nude feet — dirty, wounded and vulnerable — are painted on the façade of the Venice women’s prison chapel. It’s the work of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and part of the Vatican’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale contemporary art show in an innovative collaboration between inmates and artists. That Cattelan is the lead artist is striking, given that his provocative life-size wax statue of Pope John Paul II lying on his side, crushed by a massive meteorite, shocked Catholics when it was displayed at the 2001 Biennale. The new work, titled “Father,” is considered a thematic counterpoint to a performance piece he produced for the 1999 Biennale titled “Mother,” during which a religious ascetic was buried under sand, with only his hands clasped in prayer showing. The Vatican’s culture minister, Cardinal Jose Tolentino de Mendonca, praised the work, which he said recalled the naked, dirty feet of Caravaggio’s saints, while also being highly symbolic of the journey behind the Holy See’s pavilion, showing “the desire to dirty one’s …

Because of this unfortunate event, there is a fortress-like protection around the mural, which annoys local people. The tree is supposedly deteriorating and has been severely clipped by the Islington council. At ground level, the street artist added a stencilled image with a spray can and hose. This image appears to be gazing up at their work.   People gather to photograph the new London mural by Banksy. Photo: …

Baseball-Ohtani’s LA mural celebrates larger-than-life ballplayer

LOS ANGELES : ‘Ohtani-mania’ officially kicked off in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday with the unveiling of a 15-story mural of new Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani. It took almost a month to create the mural on the side of the Japanese Miyako Hotel in LA’s Little Tokyo and artist Robert Vargas said it represents the cultural bridge between Japan and the ‘City of Angels’. “We’re team LA and looking at everybody here, I see the whole country of Japan rooting for Shohei,” Vargas told the crowd on hand for the unveiling. “We’re all Angelinos rooting for Shohei. That nation and Dodger Nation are all on the same team.” Fans wearing Ohtani merchandise posed for photos in front of the mural and gazed up at the gigantic tribute to their favorite player, who joined the Dodgers from the Angels via free agency in the offseason. “I love the Angels and I love the Dodgers as well,” said Ohtani fan Chika Maekawa. “And I love Shohei so much. As a Japanese person, today I’m very honored to …

Banksy mural in north London gets plastic cover after vandalism | Banksy

A Banksy mural in north London has been covered with plastic sheeting and surrounded by wooden boards. The artwork appeared on the side of a residential building in Hornsey Road, Finsbury Park, on 18 March and was splattered with white paint shortly after. The mural has now been covered with plastic sheeting by the building’s owner, a spokesperson for Islington council said. Banksy claimed the mural as his own in an Instagram post after it drew crowds and attracted speculation. The artwork features bright green paint sprayed on to the building behind a cut-back tree, creating the impression of being its foliage, with a stencil of a person holding a pressure hose. A council spokesperson said: “The Banksy artwork has attracted huge crowds and there is a need to protect the art and local residents from the impact of visitor numbers. “The clear plastic and wooden frame over the artwork was installed by the owner of the building, not by the council.” They added: “To give people more security and privacy, and to protect the …

But photos show that just three days after it first appeared, white paint has been thrown over the mural. Two streaks appear to have been thrown over the green patches on the side of the building, meant to replicate the absent leaves of a nearby tree which has been cropped.
