Unmasking the Claims of the Antinuclear Movement: Climate, Health, and Energy at the Crossroads

Unmasking the Claims of the Antinuclear Movement: Climate, Health, and Energy at the Crossroads

The global population is predicted to reach just above ten billion in the 2080s (United Nations 2024) before it starts to fall, which sets targets for all of us. That is the number we need to feed and provide affordable and reliable energy.  We have learned that many of our benefits, which give us a better life than ever, have also come at a cost. Looking at energy production, we have seen that burning fossil fuels brought us prosperity but has come with increased carbon emissions and particulate matter. The former has long-term effects on the climate, and the latter has immense health implications now. Therefore, it is no surprise that we now aim to achieve industrialization’s benefits with as few side effects as possible. The goal is to remove fossil fuels while maintaining their benefits through alternatives that provide similar benefits at a lower cost to our planet and health. While energy has many components, such as steel and cement production, heating, transportation, and agriculture, this article focuses on electricity generation. Though it makes …

EU sues UK for violating free movement in Brexit treaty – POLITICO

EU sues UK for violating free movement in Brexit treaty – POLITICO

The Commission is taking the U.K. to the Court of Justice of the EU (ECJ). Although Britain ceased to be bound by EU law post-Brexit, certain matters contained in its withdrawal deal fall under the European court’s jurisdiction ― much to the annoyance of Britain’s pro-Brexit politicians. In a statement, the Commission blasted the U.K.’s “shortcomings” in implementing the terms of the treaty, “which continue to affect EU citizens.” “After carefully assessing the replies of the United Kingdom, the Commission maintains that several elements of the grievances remain unaddressed, including on the rights of workers and the rights of extended family members,” the Commission added. The violations happened at the end of 2020, the Commission said. A U.K. government spokesperson said the cases related to “issues from when the U.K. was an EU member state and during the transition period,” which was in 2020 before the signing of a trade deal between the two sides. “We remain focused on working to reset our relationship with the EU and to make Brexit work for the British …

As the Mastermind of Far-Right ‘Active Clubs’ Goes to Prison, His Violent Movement Goes Global

As the Mastermind of Far-Right ‘Active Clubs’ Goes to Prison, His Violent Movement Goes Global

American neo-Nazi Robert Rundo’s six-year “battle with the feds”—a fight that spans two dismissals, three appellate reversals, and an extradition and deportation from at least two countries—concludes today with his sentencing to federal prison for attacking ideological opponents at political rallies across California in 2017. Along with several members of the Rise Above Movement, a fight club-cum-street gang Rundo cofounded with fellow extremist Ben Daley in Southern California during the peak of the alt-right movement, Rundo was convicted on 2018 charges of conspiracy to violate the federal Anti-Riot Act for training and planning a series of attacks on political opponents at rallies across California and Unite the Right in Virginia the year prior. While Rundo may be locked behind bars for years, the movement he created is running wild around the globe. In the interceding years since his initial arrest, indictment, imprisonment, and flight from the US after his case was initially dismissed in 2019, Rundo helped mastermind an international network of RAM clones known as “Active Clubs.” A transnational alliance of far-right fight clubs …

Who Are the Young British Artists? An Overview of the Movement

Who Are the Young British Artists? An Overview of the Movement

In 1988, a group of art students from London’s Goldsmiths College united to exhibit their art together. Their techniques, mediums, and ideas were different, but they all shared a deeply polarizing attitude toward art with an entrepreneurial approach. The versatile and multifaceted YBAs are often regarded as controversial, with their unconventional materials and sometimes repulsive topics unacceptable to some. Read on to learn more about the Young British Artists and their art.   Young British Artists: Origins and Characteristics Freeze exhibition in London, 1988. Source: Phaidon   The Young British Artists, also known as YBAs, were a loose group of art students sharing one exhibition space. The history of the group started in 1988, when a second-year student of Goldsmiths College Damien Hirst organized a show titled Freeze. This exhibit brought together recent alumni and current students. They shared neither techniques nor ideologies but rather a sense of current time and place, originating from a single cultural strata. Despite major art galleries initially ignoring Hirst’s initiative, he managed to find private sponsors and soon …

“If you want to move better and have more lower body freedom you need to start training your flexibility and it all starts in the hips”: A movement expert suggests five moves for hip mobility

“If you want to move better and have more lower body freedom you need to start training your flexibility and it all starts in the hips”: A movement expert suggests five moves for hip mobility

Sitting for long periods, overtraining, running and cycling—especially without warming up properly—can all contribute to tight hips. This tightness is often caused by tension around the hip flexor muscles, which, if unaddressed, can lead to a reduced range of motion, limited mobility and an increased risk of injury. The good news? You can improve hip flexibility without spending hours stretching. According to Tom Merrick, also known as the Bodyweight Warrior, you only need these five drills to make a difference. Merrick, a calisthenics expert and fitness coach known for his strength and flexibility workouts, says: “These five stretches will have all essential ranges of the hip covered and can be applied from beginner to advanced.” How to do Tom Merrick’s stretch workout For detailed instructions on each exercise, watch Merrick’s longer YouTube video. In it, Merrick also recommends testing your flexibility by holding a lower-body position, like a deep squat, before starting the routine, then performing the position again afterward to highlight the difference the stretches can make. “If you want to move better and …

4B Movement: What Is It And Why Is It Trending After Donald Trump’s Win?

4B Movement: What Is It And Why Is It Trending After Donald Trump’s Win?

At the moment, I’d say about one-sixth of the TikTok videos on my for you page are about Korea’s 4B movement. UK Google searches for the term have absolutely soared since November 5th ― the day before the US election’s results. The trend seems to apply worldwide. Pauline Hamilton, who is currently doing “very preliminary” research on the phenomenon in Korea (though she stresses she is “by no means an expert”) revealed that “4B” refers to a sort of online gender strike. Though Pauline hopes to speak directly with women participating in the 4B movement in the future, she’s currently sharing her broader knowledge on TikTok. “The 4B movement is an online movement predominantly in South Korea where women are partaking in the four ’B’s,” she explained. The “B” stands for the Hanja (Korean Chinese characters) word for “no” or “won’t”; within the movement, this is attached to the four actions of sex, child-rearing, marriage, and dating. 4B therefore (roughly) means strict adherents aim to avoid having sex with, dating, marrying, or making babies with …

The Crime of Human Movement | Coco Fusco

The Crime of Human Movement | Coco Fusco

The man who fixed my roof stopped by the other day to see if he could charm me into giving him more work. He’s a jovial fellow in his sixties, with a bustling family business, who, judging by his name and fair complexion, is probably of Scottish origin. I was trying to figure out whether what he was telling me about my cornices was true when he suddenly started ranting about migrants. He was convinced that they were being lured by tales on social media of a carefree life in America. “They get free gift cards!” he exclaimed. “They get free phones and free health care—free everything!” I could have pointed out that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has given some recent arrivals limited-use phones in order to monitor asylum seekers without having to bear the costs of jailing them. I knew that the rumor about the gift cards had been spread by a Republican Senate candidate in Arizona, but I had little hope of changing the roofer’s mind. Conservative media spouts an endless …

The Next ‘Stop the Steal’ Movement Is Here

The Next ‘Stop the Steal’ Movement Is Here

The election is rigged. Democrats are already working to steal the election from Donald Trump, and the results are going to be illegitimate. That is, unless Trump wins. This is the message that has been percolating through segments of the online right. Over the past several weeks, conservative figures ranging from the fringe to the mainstream have been priming their audiences to declare fraud should the election not go their way. “The Democrats are rigging the 2024 election just like they did in 2020,” Laura Loomer, a right-wing troll and Trump ally, posted on the messaging app Telegram earlier this month. “From illegal voter registrations in Arizona, to widespread mail-in ballot fraud and encouraging democrats to flood the polls with illegal alien voters, they’re setting the stage to steal key swing states.” Democrats “will be stealing Wisconsin and Michigan,” Owen Shroyer, the far-right host of the Infowars show War Room, said on air last week. “I’d say that’s all but guaranteed at this point.” He then moved on to question why results might not be …

An Investigation into 969 nationalist Buddhist movement in Burma – Atheist Alliance International

An Investigation into 969 nationalist Buddhist movement in Burma – Atheist Alliance International

Burma (Myanmar) has been under the military dictatorship since 1962, the first one being a one party authoritarian socialist regime, followed by non-ideological military juntas until 2010. The military was perceived as the public enemy due to its inhumane treatments against the population, poor economic policies, and authoritarian politics. The majority Buddhist population in Burma considered the Buddhist monks as the communal leaders and the Buddhist monks also shared the views of considering the military dictatorships as the public enemy. The 8888 Uprising (also known as the 1988 Uprising) was a moment in the history where the population created a myth revolutionary figure out of their demand for a universal idealism of democracy in Hegelian sense. Hundreds of thousands of monks, students, workers, and people across different social classes joined together and protested against the government beyond the identities of religious affiliations, ethnic affiliations, and class affiliations. Aung San Suu Kyi, who at that time had no interests in politics came back to Myanmar for her mother, and was adopted by the people as their …

Remembering Marsha P. Johnson, Icon of Modern LGBTQ Rights Movement

Remembering Marsha P. Johnson, Icon of Modern LGBTQ Rights Movement

On Saturday, we celebrated the birthday of LGBTQ rights pioneer and icon, Marsha P. Johnson. She would have been 79. Johnson will perhaps be best known as one of the names behind the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, which was a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, was a frequent target of police raids. On the night of June 28, 1969, a raid led to an intense confrontation between patrons and law enforcement. Johnson, along with other LGBTQ activists, fought back against police brutality, marking a significant turning point in the struggle for LGBTQ rights. The uprising was not merely a spontaneous riot but a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ rights movement. According to this obituary from the New York Times, “although New York State downgraded sodomy from a felony to a misdemeanor in 1950, persecution of gay people and criminalization of their activities were still common. Same-sex dancing in public was prohibited. The State Liquor Authority banned bars from serving gay people alcoholic beverages. …
