What ‘The Last of Us’ Season Premiere’s Final Moments Really Mean

What ‘The Last of Us’ Season Premiere’s Final Moments Really Mean

These tensions emerge in season 2 in Jackson, Wyoming, where dozens of survivors of the Cordyceps plague have built a somewhat safe and stable existence. Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and his wife Maria (Rutina Wesley) helped establish the settlement; Ellie, now an effective fighter and sharp-shooter, helps protect it. But it has also become a microcosm of America in the early aughts. “One of the problems with Jackson,” says Mazin, “is that they’ve become a bit complacent. They feel safe enough that somebody can get drunk at a party and start tossing out homophobic slurs, to repeat the kind of shitty little sins that [people] used to feel free to commit when the world was not in an apocalypse.” Re-creating those shitty little sins—or challenging them—on television comes with complications. After HBO aired the “Long, Long Time” episode, the homophobic backlash was swift. Most of it seemed to come from a vocal minority—the episode was the series’ most-watched to date when it aired—but they were mighty enough to seemingly review-bomb the episode and take …

Lady Louise and James’s milestone moments to be marked by heartbreaking absence

Lady Louise and James’s milestone moments to be marked by heartbreaking absence

Lady Louise Windsor and her brother James, Earl of Wessex are the youngest grandchildren of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip.  Whilst being the youngest often comes with excellent perks such as having your elder cousins to guide you, there is one thing about their rank that is incredibly bittersweet.  © UK Press via Getty ImagesLady Louise had an exceptionally close relationship with her grandparents Should the pair respectively find love and choose to marry, they will be the only grandchildren of the late monarch not to have their grandparents at their future weddings.  The last of the Queen’s grandchildren to her attend their nuptials was Princess Beatrice in 2020 when she had a socially distanced wedding during the pandemic.  © Getty ImagesShould Lady Louise and James choose to marry they will be the only royal cousins who won’t have their late grandparents at their weddings Prince Philip was also at the ceremony along with only Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli-Mozzi’s parents and siblings. Living in Constitutional Moments | Blog of the APA

I met Richard Sherwin through a mutual friend, Danielle Celermajer, during the same week as I met Eva Meijer, from last month’s post. Richard and I hit it off over a sprawling Chinese take-out dinner in Chelsea. In talking with him, I felt that he has a philosophical approach to the political moment which grips the United States of America, an approach that goes to foundational issues in the law. I wanted to see how Richard lives with that approach. December 16th, 2024: Constituent power every expressive form acts as a constraint upon meaning’s uncontainable abundance. In fact, it’s that very excess by which forms of meaning take flight. In law, which is my original field of study, you often find judges struggling to interpret legal meanings in the face of changing conditions in society. Sometimes, a law has to be interpreted differently to preserve its original meaning. For instance, does using heat sensors outside a home violate constitutional safeguards to protect against unduly invasive searches and seizures by state officials?  It’s not always clear …

9 unforgettable moments that made TV great in 2024

9 unforgettable moments that made TV great in 2024

You already have your own list of best TV shows, and who am I to disagree? Any show that makes your mood a little lighter or moves you in some extraordinary way fits that designation. But traditions must be attended to, including our annual “best of” round-ups.  Regardless of the TV industry’s contraction, there are still too many outstanding shows for one person to keep up with, let alone capture in a single list. That’s one reason every year-end list of best series has its omissions; nobody can watch everything.  There are all kinds of “Best TV Series of 2024” lists, though, led by certain award magnets. FX’s “Shogun” is an all-around masterpiece.  “Ripley” and “Baby Reindeer” are among Netflix’s top must-sees. Apple TV+ continues to draw audiences with shows like “Disclaimer” (a favorite of my colleague Coleman Spilde), “Slow Horses” and the delightful “Loot.”  HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” is the deftest revival of a dead franchise I’ve seen in a long time, and “Dune: Prophecy” is an elegant extension of a cinematic phenomenon. …

It was a year of historic elections, devastating conflict and skyrocketing living costs. No wonder, then, that we seemed to seek respite – or at least a few moments’ distraction – from it all by embracing the weirder side of pop culture. We were enthralled by tales from a disastrous Willy Wonka-themed immersive event. We pondered how exactly one might “hold space” for the lyrics of musical theatre banger “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. And we diverted our attention from the US presidential race by discovering that Take That’s own Gary Barlow has a very, very tall son. (If you hadn’t already guessed, our screen time went through the roof too.) The release of Charli XCX’s album Brat prompted us to embrace our inner 365 party girl, we collectively fell for Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This and were alternately impressed and shocked by …

2024 review: Some of the year’s big moments in eight charts | Money News

2024 review: Some of the year’s big moments in eight charts | Money News

What a year 2024 was. A massive election – well, two massive elections on either side of the Atlantic, and more elsewhere around the planet – followed by changes of government and plenty of economic milestones along the way. So let’s remind ourselves of some of the big moments of the year, in chart form. We begin with the big economic picture. Growth. This time last year, the UK was (unbeknownst to us at the time) actually in recession. The news was only confirmed in the spring of this year, but for two successive quarters in the second half of last year, economic growth fell. What’s equally intriguing is what happened next: a rapid bounce-back as gross domestic product increased by more than expected in the first two quarters of the year. Since then, it has tailed off markedly, causing some consternation in the Treasury. Indeed, an initial estimate of 0.1 per cent growth in the third quarter of 2024 was revised down to zero growth – stagnation. Still, interest rates are now finally on …

Anna Wintour’s 10 best fashion moments of all time

Anna Wintour’s 10 best fashion moments of all time

Feared and revered, Anna Wintour is at the helm of global fashion. The Vogue editor is fashion’s sphinx, sitting in her bob and sunglasses like she’s guarding the gates of chic. Dictating what is in and who’s tragically out is her bread and butter, in turn keeping the trends cycle neatly ticking over.   Anna’s career is legendary in the fashion industry, spanning more than four decades. Born in London in 1949, she began her career in journalism at Harper’s & Queen before moving to New York, where she held editorial positions at Harper’s Bazaar and Viva. Her vision and ambition quickly set her apart, and she climbed the ranks to become editor-in-chief of British Vogue in 1985. Just three years later, she took over as editor-in-chief of Vogue in the United States, a role she’s famously held since 1988. © GettyAnna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley at the Gucci fashion show at Milan Fashion Week spring/summer 2009 Her tenure transformed Vogue into a powerhouse that defines global fashion. “I’m A Better Looking Person Than Kamala”: Donald Trump’s Off Script Moments Are Getting More and More Unhinged

“I’m A Better Looking Person Than Kamala”: Donald Trump’s Off Script Moments Are Getting More and More Unhinged

“You don’t mind if I go off teleprompter for a second, do you?” Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump asked his Pennsylvania crowd at a campaign rally on Saturday—less than four minutes into his speech. What followed was a long-winded, meandering address that featured Trump insisting that he is more attractive than his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. Time magazine’s latest cover features a sketch of Harris with the words “Her Moment,” accompanying an article by senior correspondent Charlotte Alter. Harris’s likeness, illustrated by Neil Jamieson, fades into images of supporters holding campaign signs. When Trump first saw the image, he claimed, “I said, ‘is that Sophia Loren?’ I couldn’t, who might that be? ‘Is that Elizabeth Taylor?’” He then calls Loren beautiful before warning U.S. Senate candidate Dave McCormick, who Trump was campaigning with, to “never call a woman beautiful because it’ll be the end of your political career.” Trump then goes after a “Ronald Reagan speechwriter,” presumptively Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan. Noonan has written about Harris’s appearance in recent weeks, saying that, …
