How David Beckham set the MLS foundation for Lionel Messi

How David Beckham set the MLS foundation for Lionel Messi

Trace the timeline of Major League Soccer from its uncertain beginnings to its unquestioned success and you’ll find Greg Vanney was there at every important juncture. He played in 29 games, including the first MLS Cup final, in the league’s inaugural season in 1996, then came off the bench in David Beckham’s debut 11 years later. In 2017, he took Toronto FC to three trophies, still the only MLS treble, and last season he coached the Galaxy in front of a Rose Bowl crowd of 82,110, largest in the league’s history. But if that’s the league’s past and present, on Sunday Vanney will enter the future, where a league that has long thrived on star power has reached a new level thanks to a player whose mere presence has come to dominate it. The “M” in MLS stands for Messi. Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest player in soccer history, joined MLS and Inter Miami last summer but played only six league games. That, however, was enough to change everything. Ticket sales and revenue soared; subscriptions …

Messi again in spotlight ahead of first full MLS season

Messi again in spotlight ahead of first full MLS season

Argentine great Lionel Messi will start his first full season with Inter Miami on Wednesday and alongside some familiar faces from his Barcelona days, his new side are favourites to secure a maiden Major League Soccer title in 2024. Messi made an instant impact when he joined Miami midseason last July, leading them to a Leagues Cup title, yet was unable to deliver enough magic to help his new club overcome their early season results and make the playoffs. But Miami have since added Luis Suarez, a move that bolsters an already talented and deep squad and reunites the 37-year-old Uruguayan striker with former Barcelona team mates Messi (36), Sergio Busquets (35) and Jordi Alba (34). After sending ticket prices skyrocketing amid all the hype and constant headlines, Miami will try to put together the right plan in order to get the most out of their talented quartet. “Superteams also find it difficult to win,” Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said in January. “Only if we prepare well and separate ourselves from believing that …

MLS Season Pass on Apple TV: How to Watch and Stream Major League Soccer in 2024

The start of the 2024 MLS season is almost upon us, and Apple TV’s soccer service MLS Season Pass is once again the only way to catch all the soccer action live. Free-scoring Columbus Crew enter the new campaign as the defending MLS Cup Final champions, but all eyes will inevitably be on the challenge put up by a full season of a Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami.  While the offseason hasn’t seen as seismic a signing as the one that saw the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner join the club last year, Miami have nevertheless made a significant new recruit for 2024 with the addition of Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez. The move reunites Suárez with Inter’s trio of fellow golden-era Barcelona veterans Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Messi.  Other big-name new players to the MLS for the new campaign include experienced French international goalkeeper Hugo Loris who joins from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur while the New York Red Bulls have been boosted by the addition of Swedish attacking midfielder Emil Forsberg from sister club RB …

Brett Carlsen/Getty Images Major League Soccer will kick off its season this week with replacement referees, after unionized match officials rejected a contract offer they said fell “short of expectations.” On Saturday, nearly 96% of Professional Soccer Referees Association members voted against a bargaining agreement put forward by the Professional Referee Organization, which employs referees for MLS and other professional soccer leagues. After the vote, the PRO announced it would lock out unionized match officials and instead begin the regular season with non-unionized replacement referees. Lionel Messi Wasn’t Seen at MLS Media Day. Doesn’t Matter, Since Everyone Talked About Him

Lionel Messi Wasn’t Seen at MLS Media Day. Doesn’t Matter, Since Everyone Talked About Him

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi was not visible at Major League Soccer’s annual media day on Thursday. His shadow was. Messi is entering his first full season with Inter Miami, which creates an obvious storyline that seems to be on everyone’s mind as MLS teams enter their preseason training camps. And a franchise that hasn’t come close to winning an MLS Cup — and didn’t even make the playoffs last season, even with Messi around for the last few months — suddenly seems like a frontrunner entering 2024. So, yes, Messimania continues, with no signs of slowing down. “Even as an opposition coach, everyone’s looking in the calendar for the Miami game,” Toronto coach John Herdman said. “I mean, it’s a really exciting time for MLS to have the best player, in my opinion, who ever played the game in this league. … The league has got some of the best facilities, some of the best fan bases, and now we’ve got the best player ever playing the game, so it’s the place …

Goalkeeper Steffen leaves Man City to join MLS club Colorado Rapids

American goalkeeper Zack Steffen has joined Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids from Manchester City, both clubs said on Thursday. The 28-year-old has signed a three-year contract with an option to extend for an additional year. He leaves City after four seasons with the Premier League champions, in which he made 21 appearances, most of which came in domestic cup competitions. Steffen, who has 29 caps for the United States, spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Middlesbrough in the second-tier Championship, making more than 40 league appearances as they reached the promotion play-offs. “Zack is an elite-level goalkeeper with a wealth of experience internationally and in MLS,” Colorado Rapids president Padraig Smith said.
