War and joint bonds forge a more united Europe – POLITICO

War and joint bonds forge a more united Europe – POLITICO

Ever closer union Something similar is going on now at the European level, analysts say. The move toward defense by potentially enormous debt financing seems “to be actually going back to how people thought about this in the 18th and 19th century,” James said. “It’s not necessary for a state to have its own money. Early modern states often operated with all kinds of coinages … But the states do need to defend themselves,” he added. “They need an army.”  The war in Ukraine has also forced European policymakers to consider major fiscal adjustments that were previously unthinkable — and which have long been seen as a first step toward a deeper union.  Germany’s relaxation of its debt brake for the military is, at first glance, strictly a national decision — one that it will put to the vote in its lower house on Tuesday. But the jettisoning of the national taboo on debt suggests a softening of its long-held fiscally conservative stance at the European level. It’s in Berlin’s interest that if it goes …

Pentagon Signs Deal to “Deploy AI Agents for Military Use”

Pentagon Signs Deal to “Deploy AI Agents for Military Use”

The Pentagon has signed a deal with AI company Scale AI, in an initiative it’s calling “Thunderforge,” to use AI agents for military planning and operations. The team-up, described as a “flagship program,” is a notable development given how divisive the topic of the use of AI in warfare has proven — and how many of the tech’s nagging shortcomings have yet to be meaningfully addressed. Yet the encroachment of AI tech within the military has been unmistakable. Both Google and OpenAI have walked back rules forbidding the use of their AI tech for weapons development and surveillance, showing that Silicon Valley is opening up to the idea of having its tools be used by the military. Just last month, a senior Pentagon official told Defense One that the US military was looking to move away from funding research on the topic of autonomous killer robots and investing in actual AI-powered weaponry instead. And it goes beyond the Pentagon. Late last year, OpenAI also announced a partnership with Palmer Luckey’s defense tech company Anduril to …

US military wants to grow giant biological structures in space

DARPA envisions growing structures hundreds of metres long Science Photo Library / Alamy Stock Photo The US military is brainstorming ways to build large structures in space, from telescope antennas to elevator tethers. By growing these objects in microgravity using biological organisms, they hope to avoid the costly and painstaking process of launching components from Earth. “We have yet to unlock the potential of biology for space production and manufacturing,” says Michael Nayak, program manager for the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The combination of biology and mechanical engineering could unlock new ways to “manufacture at unprecedented… Source link

Mattis joins ex-Pentagon chiefs in call for hearings on ‘reckless’ Trump military firings

Five former Defense secretaries have called on Congress to immediately hold hearings on President Trump’s “reckless” firing of senior military leaders, including the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In a letter sent Thursday, the group condemns Trump’s move, which they say seeks to politicize the historically apolitical U.S. military, and urges lawmakers to… Source link

Brown, on Friday. Panelists on Washington Week With The Atlantic joined to discuss what the president’s move could mean for the U.S. military. “Trump, in his first term, tried to assert control over the military in a way that went beyond what the commander in chief does, not just as a defense for the country against external enemies but as a tool, potentially, for internal use when he had domestic criticism,” Peter Baker said last night. “Clearly, there is a decision that C. Q. Brown is not someone …

Hamas frees more hostages, but Israel delays release of Palestinian prisoners – POLITICO

Hamas frees more hostages, but Israel delays release of Palestinian prisoners – POLITICO

The hostages freed by Hamas were: Tal Shoham, 40; Avera Mengistu, 38; Eliya Cohen, 27; Omer Shem Tov, 22; Hisham Al-Sayed, 36; and Omer Wenkert, 23. The hostages had been held in the Gaza Strip by the militant group since its attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Their release comes amid a rapid escalation in tensions between Israel and Hamas, as violence in Tel Aviv and the West Bank threaten a fragile cease-fire deal in Gaza after almost 16 months of war. On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to carry out an “intensive operation” in the West Bank after national police reported the explosion of three empty buses near Tel Aviv on Thursday.  After the explosions, Hamas released the remains of four dead Israeli hostages — but tensions escalated after it was revealed that the militant group had handed over the wrong body claimed to be the remains of Shiri Bibas, an Israeli mother of two. Trump’s Military Purge Has Washington Asking ‘Who’s Next?’

Trump’s Military Purge Has Washington Asking ‘Who’s Next?’

President Donald Trump’s firing of the country’s most senior military officer on Friday night rattled the foundations of the armed forces. It also intensified an already-furious game of “who’s next” among senior lawmakers and Washington officials, who have been trading information about the commander-in-chief’s likely targets. Trump fired Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., known as CQ, who was only the second African American to serve as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The president then tapped a relatively unknown officer to replace him–retired three-star Air Force general Dan “Raizin” Caine, who reportedly impressed the president with his swagger and bravado when they met in Iraq in 2018. Brown’s dismissal, coupled with Caine’s improbable elevation, added to a sense of bewilderment that has prevailed across the national security establishment in recent days, as the administration purges the upper echelons of career officers and civil servants. Trump also appears poised to remove several other top military leaders–focusing onBlack and women officers–and replace them with his hand-picked successors. And at the FBI, the CIA, …

DOGE’s USDS Purge Included the Guy Who Keeps Veterans’ Data Safe Online

DOGE’s USDS Purge Included the Guy Who Keeps Veterans’ Data Safe Online

The dozens of USDS cuts last week hit teams like product management, design, and procurement. Kamens and other sources told WIRED that he is the only person from the USDS engineering team who was fired. He and others speculate that he was targeted because he had been publicly critical of DOGE in the weeks before the USDS cuts. DOGE did not return a request for comment about his removal. While all large IT systems need to be protected from hacking threats, Kamens says that the most urgent projects he was working on at the VA involved containing veterans’ sensitive personal data so it could only be stored in the most guarded parts of the system and deploying stronger controls to limit who could access what information. Both understanding how data flows through a system and limiting access to reduce risk from network intrusion and insider threats have emerged as key security priorities for any organization. “My biggest concern that I was trying to address in my time at the VA related to personal health data …
