Warner Bros. Lets You Watch 31 Films Free Online: David Byrne’s True Stories, Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman, Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep & More

It’s Friday, which means that tonight, many of us will sit down to watch a movie with our family, our friends, our significant other, or — for some cinephiles, best of all — by ourselves. If you haven’t yet lined up any home-cinematic experience in particular, consider taking a look at this playlist of 31 feature films just made available to stream by Warner Bros. You’ll know the name of that august Hollywood studio, of course, but did you know that it put out True Stories, the musical plunge into tabloid America directed by Talking Heads’ David Byrne? Or Waiting for Guffman, the first improvised movie by Christopher Guest and his troupe of crack comedic players like Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Catherine O’Hara, and Parker Posey? That may already strike many Open Culture readers as the makings of a fine double feature, though some may prefer to watch the early work of another kind of auteur: Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, say, or Richard Linklater’s SubUrbia (a stage-play adaptation that could well be paired with …

10 Signs Of A Genuinely Good Friend, According To Psychology | Larry Michel

People who attract positive, energizing people often carry themselves in a way that’s different from others. These qualities can be hard to isolate and explain, so they may feel “magical” or like something you have to be born with, but they aren’t necessarily. If you want to attract people that make life sweeter, you need to start by looking at yourself. Here are 10 signs of a genuinely good friend, according to psychology 1. They are authentic They are authentic to themselves. They embrace their quirks, strengths, and weaknesses and don’t pretend to be someone they’re not. This is not a gauge of how much personality they demonstrate but how congruent their words and actions are. They are radically honest, and this genuine approach to life attracts people who appreciate and value them for who they are. 2. They have a positive attitude PeopleImages.com – Yuri A via Shutterstock Their glass is never half empty, it’s always half full. The Life And Death Of Any Relationship Hinges On One Ingredient | Larry Michel

The Life And Death Of Any Relationship Hinges On One Ingredient | Larry Michel

Striving for a joyful and fulfilling relationship to stand the test of time can take a lifetime. Many more decades than we care to admit can go by until we discover what makes relationships work. Before I was old enough to consider a romantic relationship, I wanted a connection that excited, engaged, and inspired me to be more. I was raised to believe finding someone I loved and who loved me would mean I found “the one”. We would have kids, pets, and our home. All would be perfect. I was missing the key to a lasting and meaningful relationship. RELATED: How To Create Peace In A Relationship — Without Surrendering Your Identity The success of your relationship hinges on this one thing: your ability to co-create a beautiful life  What I was missing  After a couple of marriage attempts, which I am grateful for to this day, I met the mother of my children. I no longer subscribed to my original relationship conditioning. But I still believed I held the key to success. I …

EU’s Michel tells Trump ‘get the facts straight’ on Ukraine funding – POLITICO

“Why isn’t Europe giving more money to help Ukraine? Why is it that the United States is over $100 Billion … into the Ukraine War more than Europe, and we have an Ocean between us as separation!” Trump wrote in post on social media. Michel did not let the comment slide. “The numbers speak for themselves,” he clapped back. “EU contribution to Ukraine: €143 billion ($150 billion).” Ukraine is struggling to resist Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urging the West to step up its support as Kyiv’s forces are running short of critical weapons and ammunition. Trump has for years accused European NATO allies of relying on Washington to provide protection against hostile foreign powers, and has badgered them to spend more on defense. The EU and its members have committed some €144 billion in military and financial aid to Ukraine, but have allocated for delivery only about €77 billion of that, according to Germany’s Kiel Institute, which compiles national contributions to Kyiv’s war effort. The U.S. has committed about €68 billion in total …

Who Was Michel Foucault? Power, Knowledge, and Legacy

Who Was Michel Foucault? Power, Knowledge, and Legacy

Michel Foucault was a French philosopher who wrote extensively on the interplay of power and knowledge, social institutions, psychology, sexuality, and language. Using genealogy to investigate the historical evolution of what he observes in society, Foucault has contributed to the development of poststructuralism and postmodernism and has influenced numerous thinkers who have helped shape the modern world.   Foucault’s Early Life and Education Photograph of École Normale Supérieure. Source: ENS   Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers in 1926. He was the second of three children of a French middle-class family. Both his father, Paul Foucault, and his grandparents were surgeons. Foucault and his siblings, Denys and Francine, had a Catholic upbringing, and although they were not religious, the young philosopher served at the altar of the Saint-Porchair Church. In 1930, Foucault completed his elementary education at Lycée Henry IV and then studied at the local school of his hometown. In 1946, he started his higher education studies at École Normale Supérieure, where he discovered his love for philosophy under the tutelage of Jean …

2024 Abel prize winner Michel Talagrand says mathematicians are explorers

Michel Talagrand is the winner of the 2024 Abel prize Peter Bagde/Typos1/Abel Prize 2024 French mathematician Michel Talagrand has won the 2024 Abel prize for his work on probability theory and describing randomness. Shortly after he had heard the news, New Scientist spoke with Talagrand to learn more about his mathematical journey. Alex Wilkins: What does it mean to win the Abel prize? Michel Talagrand: I think everybody would agree that the Abel prize is really considered like the equivalent of the Nobel prize in mathematics. So it’s something for me totally unexpected, I never, ever dreamed I would receive this prize. And actually, it’s not such an easy thing to do, because there is this list of people who already received it. And on that list, they are true giants of mathematics. And it’s not such a comfortable feeling to sit with them, let me tell you, because it’s clear that their achievements are on an entirely other scale than I am. What are your attributes as a mathematician? I’m not able to learn …

2024 Abel prize: Michel Talagrand wins maths award for making sense of randomness

2024 Abel prize: Michel Talagrand wins maths award for making sense of randomness

Michel Talagrand says life is frighteningly random Peter Badge/Typos1/Abel Prize 2024 Michel Talagrand has won the 2024 Abel prize, sometimes called the Nobel prize of mathematics, for his work on probability theory and describing randomness. The news came as a surprise to Talagrand, who found out on what he thought was a departmental Zoom call. “My brain completely stopped for five seconds. It was an amazing experience. I never, ever could have expected such a thing.” Talagrand, based at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), has spent a large part of his four-decade career characterising the extremes of random, or stochastic, systems. These problems are common in the real world – for example, bridge builders might need to know the maximum wind strength to expect from the local weather. Such random systems can often be extremely complex and contain many random variables, but Talagrand’s methods, which convert these systems to geometric problems, can extract useful values. “He is a master in obtaining precise estimates and knowing exactly what to add or subtract in …

‘Everyone is just so tired’ of Charles Michel – POLITICO

And while his U-turn may have been unpopular, European leaders will now get to focus on the decision to support Ukraine rather than discussing succession plans, as Michel will stay on until the end of November instead of taking up his European Parliament seat in mid-July.  Those who defend him say there was little pressure anyway. Michel staying “doesn’t make a difference. He wasn’t leaving now anyway,” said a third diplomat. “Running for elections is what they [politicians] do.”  Still, Michel’s announcement earlier this month fired the firing gun on the European top jobs race. European capitals have now actively been thinking (if they weren’t already) about how to distribute the top jobs at the European Council, Commission, Parliament, and the EU’s diplomatic service after the European election in June.  Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen | Odd Andersen/AFP via Getty Images Mette Frederiksen, the current socialist prime minister of Denmark, is a name that continues to be floated around Brussels. Former lawyer for Fugees rapper Pras Michel fined and sentenced in contempt case

Former lawyer for Fugees rapper Pras Michel fined and sentenced in contempt case

A former lawyer for Fugees rapper Pras Michel was sentenced Friday to one year of unsupervised probation and will have to pay a fine after he admitted to violating a court order by sharing protected discovery material with reporters in the run-up to his client’s 2023 trial.  David Kenner, 82, agreed to plead guilty to one count of criminal contempt as part of a deal with prosecutors that ensured he would not face jail time. It initially appeared as if U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta might reject the deal during Friday’s virtual hearing, saying a lack of punishment for Kenner might send the “wrong signal” to other lawyers bound by protective orders. Mehta ultimately accepted the deal after the parties agreed he retained the right to impose a maximum fine of $5,000.  “Maybe it’s a small, but symbolic thing, but it would make a difference to me,” Mehta said of the fine.  Kenner’s lawyer, Barrett Boss, did not push back on the $5,000 fine but told Mehta that his client had spent $1.4 million out-of-pocket …
