Romeo Beckham and girlfriend Kim could be mistaken for David and Victoria inside Miami penthouse

Romeo Beckham couldn’t be more loved-up with his new girlfriend Kim Turnbull, and on Friday, the couple left us doing a double take. Taking to his Instagram Stories, the 22-year-old posed beside his brunette beauty inside his parents’ ultra-luxe Miami penthouse gym. The location is often seen by fans of David and Victoria, who frequently share snaps from their joint workouts on their respective social media accounts. Protestors Call for Boycott on Art Basel Until Miami Divests from Israel

Protestors Call for Boycott on Art Basel Until Miami Divests from Israel

A coalition of Miami-based advocacy groups staged a protest outside of the Miami Beach Convention Center on the second public day of Art Basel, calling for attendees to boycott the fair until the city of Miami and Miami Dade County divest from large-scale investments in Israel. Cristina Rivera, an artist and technologist, told ARTnews that organizers are using Art Basel, one of Miami’s biggest tourist attractions, as a platform to amplify concerns about Israel’s war in Gaza. The artist said advocates take issue with Miami Beach’s investment in Israel Bonds, which the city doubled to $20 million last year, framing the protest as a way to oppose policies they associate with the ongoing violence in the Middle East. Related Articles Four advocacy groups organized Saturday’s protest, including South Florida’s Justice for Palestine chapter and a local chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Hayley Margolis, an activist with JVP, told ARTnews that she hopes the demonstration challenges the public’s complacency around the carnage in Gaza. The action was concieved as part of the organization’s ongoing “Break …

Why Art Basel Miami Beach Was Ready and Waiting for the Trump Bump

Why Art Basel Miami Beach Was Ready and Waiting for the Trump Bump

On the opening day of Art Basel Miami Beach, an Uber driver with a Tesla took me from the convention center to Star Island, a three-mile trip that lasted nearly an hour in traffic. A man-made blip of land between mainland and beach, built by the Army, and home, at one time or another, to the likes of Shaq, Diddy, A-Rod, and Gloria Estefan, the island was eerily quiet compared to the madness of an art fair on its first VIP day, and completely dark by 6 p.m. I had ventured to the semiprivate locale to meet with Steven Galanis, the cofounder and CEO of Cameo, the start-up that allows users to purchase customized video messages from celebrities. Last week Matt Gaetz joined, and President Trump’s scuttled pick for attorney general will wish your conservative dad happy birthday in a MAGA hat for upwards of $500. I’ve known Galanis since his pre-Cameo days. We were the same year at Duke, and I profiled him for the college magazine. But I hadn’t seen him since he …

Art Basel Miami Beach 2024: Museum Shows to See

Art Basel Miami Beach 2024: Museum Shows to See

People come to Art Basel Miami Beach to buy art, attend parties, gawk at social-media-famous socialites, or some mixture of the three. Museums generally don’t offer the public any opportunities for any of that, and so, even though Miami has plenty of institutions, these spaces must play second fiddle to Art Basel and the other fairs that orbit it. But there are good reasons to venture beyond the fairs and into institutional walls this week—not the least because museums offer a temporary reprieve from dealers trying to hawk their wares. Here is the good news: Miami, unlike the other cities where Art Basel hold its fairs, has no MoMA-scaled museums, which means that the institutional offerings are manageably sized. Here is the bad news: museums here are not immune to the whims of the market (note the mentions of “support” from blue-chip galleries in wall texts), which results in watered-down curation. This all can make the crop of institutional shows variable in quality at best and downright bad at worst. Which museum exhibitions are actually …

At Art Basel Miami Beach, Collectors and Gallerists Say the Energy is Back

At Art Basel Miami Beach, Collectors and Gallerists Say the Energy is Back

Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in On Balance, the ARTnews newsletter about the art market and beyond. Sign up here to receive it every Wednesday. On Monday night, art collector Craig Robins kicked off Miami Art Week by opening the doors to the headquarters of his real estate development company Dacra. Located in Miami’s Design District—home to the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami and many of the city’s galleries—Dacra’s offices were lined with works from Robin’s collection, including pieces by John Baldessari, Mickalene Thomas, Francisco Goya and Kai Althoff. Related Articles Robins played a key part in bringing Art Basel to Miami in 2002, working alongside collector and luxury retailer Norman Braman, and Art Basel’s then-director Sam Keller. At the time, the three men talked about wanting the city to have a cultural draw beyond its party scene. Over 20 years later, since the pandemic, that dream seems to have been achieved. As Robins told ARTnews Monday,  the city has gotten denser, property values have risen, and there are more tourists driving traffic to art spaces year round. “Covid catapulted …

Untitled Art Miami Beach 2024: Five Can’t-Miss Booths

Untitled Art Miami Beach 2024: Five Can’t-Miss Booths

Untitled is hardly the only art fair that takes place in Miami Beach this week, but it is certainly, well, the beachiest. The fair is set on a tent located on the sand itself, and from its aisles, you can peer out to observe bathers lounging around. That may explain the freewheeling spirit of Untitled. Don’t come expecting much in the way of conceptual art—you’ll have to wait for the opening of Art Basel Miami Beach tomorrow for that one. What is here, mainly, is a whole lot of painting, both figurative and abstract, and a lot of good people watching. The chill vibes seem to conflict with the grand scale of Untitled, which has this year brought 171 galleries to town. This was somehow just one of two high-profile events that opened to VIPs on Tuesday—the other was NADA Miami—and that meant that the curators, artists, collectors, and advisers who attended were forced to make some tough decisions on how to manage both. To help make those decisions easier for those visiting throughout the …

PERHAPS NOT…A weary art world is gearing up for 2024’s last hurrah, Art Basel Miami Beach, from December 6 to 8. Following a mixed $1.3 billion New York auction week, all eyes are on this major market event, which will showcase 286 galleries from 38 countries at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year marks a significant shift as veteran gallerist Bridget Finn takes the reins as the fair’s director, promising a fresh approach. One of the most notable changes is the largest group of newcomers since 2008, with 34 first-time galleries. Finn has also redesigned the fair’s layout, incorporating the large-scale Meridians section into the main exhibition space, situated between the Nova and Positions sections, which highlight emerging galleries and works. Following a decent round of auctions in New York and the conclusion of the US elections, advisors are optimistic about the fair’s impact. New York-based advisor Anwarii Musa told Artnet she believes the market …
