Net Metering: How You Can Save Even More Money With Solar

If you have solar panels on your roof, you almost certainly aren’t using all of the energy they produce. All that excess is sent to the grid, joining your utility’s supply of electricity. If you received nothing in return for this extra energy, solar panels would be a harder investment to justify. While home battery storage can help you save the energy you don’t immediately use, there’s a simpler (and cheaper) option available to solve this imbalance. Net metering is one way utilities compensate you for the electricity you produce, making sure you get something in return for the solar power you produce but don’t use. While net metering is the most common and well-known compensation scheme, there are a few others as well — such as the net billing policy.  It’s not true that feeding solar power into the grid will amount to a major payday each month, but if you educate yourself in advance, it might pay for your investment in going solar over the long term. We’ll explain everything you need to …

Does Your State Have Solar Net Metering?

Does Your State Have Solar Net Metering?

One of the many perks of going solar is the idea you can bank cash or credit when you generate excess energy.  It’s called net metering or net billing — and not every state or utility offers it.  Each state has its own policies around net metering, which can make it hard to sift through what exactly net metering means for you. And those policies are shifting, with California’s recent policy change having significant ripple effects throughout the rooftop solar industry. Can solar panels save you money? Interested in understanding the impact solar can have on your home? Enter some basic information below, and we’ll instantly provide a free estimate of your energy savings. With net metering, owners of solar panels can offset their energy use by transferring the excess energy they generate back to their utility’s electrical grid. In some cases, electrical customers enrolled in net metering programs can save or make money on their electric bill when they generate more energy than they need to power their home with.   To help you understand …

Water metering should be compulsory in England, advisers likely to say | Water

Water metering should be made compulsory for all households in England, the government is likely to be told this week, as water supplies come under pressure from increased demand and more frequent droughts and floods. Strain on the UK’s water networks is increasing under the more extreme weather conditions generated by the climate crisis and, under increasing demand, investment by water companies has not kept up. No new large reservoirs have been constructed in England in at least 30 years, and leaks from pipes still amount to about a third of water wasted. Managing demand through metering is therefore unavoidable, a panel of independent experts convened by the government is likely to find. The National Infrastructure Commission will publish its comprehensive assessment of the UK’s critical infrastructure, the first for five years, on Wednesday. Covering everything from energy and transport to water and waste, it is expected to find large gaps in investment and many areas in which the UK’s existing infrastructure is poorly maintained and inadequate. The commission, set up under George Osborne when …
