Vodafone Pro II from £39 a month: Folks in the UK looking for a new internet service provider (ISP) should check out Vodafone’s Pro II. While ISPs have traditionally provided shoddy routers to their customers, that seems to be changing. The Vodafone Pro II is a tri-band router that supports Wi-Fi 6E, and it delivered lightning-fast speeds in my tests on a par with many of my picks above. The range is limited, especially on the 6-GHz band, but this service comes with a range extender that appears as part of the same network. You can also get a 4G backup that connects to Vodafone’s mobile network to keep you online should your regular internet connection fail. A woman who suffered traumatic complications from a vaginal mesh implant has been awarded a record settlement of at least £1m from the NHS. Yvette Greenway-Mansfield, 59, was given a mesh implant at Coventry’s University Hospital in 2009 and went on to suffer serious complications. Her medical negligence claim against the hospital trust found that the surgery was carried out prematurely and unnecessarily and that her consent form had been doctored to include additional risks after Greenway-Mansfield had signed it. Greenway-Mansfield said that being awarded the compensation was a “huge relief”, but added that many other women who have suffered similar damage had received little or no compensation, and criticised the government’s failure to establish a financial redress agency for victims. “I’m not the only one. There are thousands of mes,” she said. “There should be a pot of money to provide damages for these women and a care plan in place as an automatic response to mesh-damaged people. Wirepas, a startup out of Finland that is building out an Internet of Things business based on a novel approach — using mesh networking, rather than cellular or WiFi to connect thousands of objects — has raised some funding to give its efforts some oxygen. The company has picked up $22 million, at a valuation we understand to be in the region of between $100 million and $200 million. The list of investors contains some interesting names that speak to potential strategic potential for Wirepas and its technology. Highland Europe is leading the round, with new backers Amalfi IQT (In-Q-Tel, the investment business connected to the CIA in the U.S.); and previous backers ETF Partners, KPN Ventures (the investment arm of the telecoms giant), Vito Ventures and Vesa Laisi also participating. The funding is coming on the heels of some decent traction. Wirepas now has some 160 customers (which it calls “partners”) and there are 7 million devices connected using its tech. Amazon’s eero acquisition continues to bear fruit, and the latest off the vine is the eero Max 7, by far the company’s most advanced router yet, and the most capable when it comes to input and output options, too. The Max 7 supports Wifi 7, the cutting edge in wifi standards that’s still relatively hard to find in consumer devices, and it also boasts 6 GHz frequency networking for better mesh and local network performance.
