Google Nest Renew and OhmConnect merge into “Renew Home” with a 0M boost from Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners

Google Nest Renew and OhmConnect merge into “Renew Home” with a $100M boost from Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners

Another development today in Google’s long-term strategy to streamline some of its less-core business operations. Google Nest Renew — a load shifting service for Google Nest owners get them to consume energy at off-peak times when energy is less expensive, or there are “cleaner” grid options available when your grid is cleaner or energy is less expensive — is spinning out from Google and combining with OhmConnect, a part of Sidewalk Infrastructure Labs that helps manage load shifting services for Nest and other smart thermostat brands. The new company will be called “Renew Home.” As part of the deal, SIP will be kicking in $100 million into the new entity, and it will become a majority owner of it. Google is not investing at this time and is staying on as a minority shareholder. There is no valuation being disclosed, a spokesperson said. OhmConnect is currently active in California, Texas, and New York, and the new company, Renew Home, plans to expand into new markets once launched, the spokesperson added. The deal is bringing together …

Indian fintech unicorn Slice to merge with bank

Indian fintech unicorn Slice to merge with bank

Indian unicorn fintech Slice is merging with North East Small Finance Bank, they said Wednesday after receiving the approval from the central bank, in an extremely rare feat that has eluded many tech giants, top financial startups and tycoons for decades. Slice – which earlier offered credit card like cards and at peak issued over 400,000 cards, more than any other fintech or bank – said the merger with the Guwahati-headquartered bank will allow the combined entity to better serve their shared mission and reach more consumers who currently lack access to basic banking services. The merger – which follows Slice earlier acquiring a 10% stake in the lender in recent quarters – should also enable the new entity to supercharge its product offerings and accelerate its product iterations, industry executives said. The Reserve Bank of India clarified a range of guidelines last year that impacted scores of startups including Slice, rival Uni, neobanks Jupiter and Fi, making sweeping changes that challenged how many firms issued cards. Slice founder and chief executive Rajan Bajaj said …

ElectraMeccanica to merge with electric truck startup Tevva

ElectraMeccanica to merge with electric truck startup Tevva

ElectraMeccanica, the maker of the tiny three-wheeled Solo electric vehicle, will merge with UK-based truck manufacturer Tevva in a bid to grow their combined market share for electric trucks, the companies said Tuesday. The merger represents a pivot for ElectraMeccanica, which struggled to produce its small electric vehicle profitably. After a recall in February, ElectraMeccanica was forced to discontinue the Solo vehicle. By focusing on medium- and heavy-duty commercial electric trucks, a fast-growing segment in the global EV market, the company will be able to keep some of its operations alive. For Tevva, the merger is an opportunity to grow in the UK and Europe, enter the U.S. market and produce more trucks at ElectraMeccanica’s plant in Mesa, Arizona. The Mesa plant is expected to begin production in 2025 and reach full capacity in 2026. It’ll be able to produce 10,000 units of Tevva’s 7.5T model electric commercial truck, according to a company spokesperson. Tevva recently began delivering the 7.5T to commercial fleet customers, and is currently producing that model in its UK factory at …

Vodafone and Three plan to merge in the UK in a B deal (if regulators approve)

Vodafone and Three plan to merge in the UK in a $19B deal (if regulators approve)

The mobile market in Europe and the U.K. — once orchestrated to be ripe ground for competition — has been on a long-term course of consolidation, and the latest chapter in that story was made official today. Vodafone Group and Hutchison Group have announced a plan to merge their U.K. carriers, respectively the eponymous Vodafone and Three. The companies said there is “no cash consideration to be paid” in this merger and it would also include debt from both businesses. The combined business, if calculated using today’s users numbers, would have around 28 million subscribers — Vodafone has nearly 18 million and Three has just over 10 million as of May 2023) — and would be worth some £15 billion (nearly $19 billion at today’s rates), and would be 51% owned by Vodafone and 49% owned by Hutchison. The companies said that they expect the merger to be completed by the end of 2024 — subject to regulatory approvals. That might not be as seamless as it sounds. Previous carrier mergers have taken years and …
