Private Snafu: The World War II Propaganda Cartoons Created by Dr. Seuss, Frank Capra & Mel Blanc

Private Snafu: The World War II Propaganda Cartoons Created by Dr. Seuss, Frank Capra & Mel Blanc

Private Snafu was the U.S. Army’s worst soldier. He was sloppy, lazy and prone to shooting off his mouth to Nazi agents. And he was hugely popular with his fellow GIs. Private Snafu was, of course, an animated cartoon character designed for the military recruits. He was an adorable dolt who sounded like Bugs Bunny and looked a bit like Elmer Fudd. And in every episode, he taught soldiers what not to do, from blabbing about troop movements to not taking malaria medication. The idea for the series reportedly came from Frank Capra — the Oscar-winning director of It’s a Wonderful Life and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and, during WWII, the chairman of the U.S. Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit. He wanted to create a cartoon series for new recruits, many of whom were young, unworldly and in some cases illiterate. Capra gave Disney first shot at developing the idea but Warner Bros’ Leon Schlesinger, a man who was as famous for his hard-driving business acumen as he was for wearing excessive …

Netflix Gets Rights to Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn’s Show ‘Penelope’

Netflix Gets Rights to Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn’s Show ‘Penelope’

Penelope, the pandemic-written, independently financed and produced young-adult series from co-creators Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn, has landed a distributor.  Netflix acquired U.S. rights to the series’ eight-episode first season, the duo announced Sunday while appearing at SeriesFest. Duplass called the six-month process of finding a distributor for the show following its debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival “insane” and told the Denver crowd that “a lot of people were very, very interested” in the series and thus “had a lot of different kinds of offers.”  “We’ve done independent films before, where you have a few hundred thousand dollars, and we go out, make the film and sell it. There really isn’t a model yet of independently made television where you make the whole season and try to sell it,” he said of the process of independently funding and then distributing Penelope. “From taking out the show and figuring out how we’re going to sell it or making the deals with our actors, no one knows how to do it. … So there was …

Mel B Speaks Out After Rumours ‘Frosty’ Geri Horner Reunion Claims

According to The Sun, an unnamed “source” suggested that things were a little awkward between Mel B and Geri Halliwell, after the former’s repeated jokes (including during a recent appearance on Olivia Attwood’s So Wrong It’s Right podcast) that the latter had previously lied about her age. However, Mel’s recent Instagram post appears to put rumours of any tension between herself and her bandmates to bed for now. “What an amazing girl power weekend with all my girls, I have soooo much love and respect for you ALL,” she wrote alongside the hashtag #FriendshipNeverEnds and a snap of the five-piece together at the party. The group’s mini reunion (and impromptu dance routine) came as a huge treat for fans, given the last time all five members have performed together was the closing ceremony of the London Olympics over a decade ago. While the band embarked on a UK stadium tour in the summer of 2019, Victoria did not take part in the live shows. “Thank you to all my friends and family for celebrating with …

During an appearance on Olivia Attwood’s ‘So Wrong It’s Right’ podcast, Mel insisted it was “wrong” for a person to lie about their age. The host replied: “My mum was here the other day and she said, Oh no, it’s right, because I don’t even know how old she is.” Mel said: “No, well no one knows how old Geri is. No one’s seen her passport. I mean, I know we’ve travelled the world, but I still don’t know how old she is. “Well, she claims she just had her 50th birthday, but I don’t believe her.” Elsewhere on the podcast, the ‘Stop’ singer promised there is “definitely” a Spice Girls reunion on the way, …

Mel B walks off Today with Hoda & Jenna set over Spice Girls comments: ‘I’m going to get in trouble’

Mel B was forced to walk off stage during a live appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna. Joining the co-hosts on Monday, the British superstar was asked about rumors of a Spice Girls reunion, which left her fearing she’d said too much.  Asked if she could “break the news” on a potential reunion, Mel joked: “I can’t because I always get told off because I’m the blabbermouth!” “You know, we are working — I think I said this to you before, us five are working on something that’s going to be announced soon,” she continued. “Are we gonna be satisfied?” asked Jenna Bush Hager, to which Mel replied: “Very”.  But, it was after Mel was questioned about the possibility of a tour that she quickly stopped talking. “Oh, I’m going to get in trouble. I’m not saying anything. OK bye!” the singer quipped, jokingly running off stage.  Jenna and her co-star, Hoda Kotb, couldn’t help but laugh at the situation with the latter remarking: “That felt like maybe there’s gonna be a tour.” Prior …
