‘After months of social distancing, my whole family came together’: Matteo Fagiolino’s best phone picture | Photography

As a portraitist and wedding photographer, Matteo Fagiolino likes to reflect his subjects’ personalities in his work. This photograph was taken after the first Covid lockdown ended, at the beach at Torre Pedrera, a town on the Rimini riviera in Italy. “It was a summer afternoon after months of social distancing,” he says. “It had been so long since my whole family had spent the day together, it was a breath of fresh air for everyone.” Fagiolino’s brother came, along with his two children – Andrea, in the foreground of this image, and Alice. “He is a very calm boy, she is a very determined girl, and I can see precisely these aspects of their character by looking at this image, especially in their eyes.” While the children were playing in the sea at dusk, “the sun began to set and warm their faces, and I noticed their expressions reflected in the water,” Fagiolino says. “I thought it might be nice to have a memory of that day spent together, so I got out of the …

THOMAS SAMSON / AFP Up-and-coming American rider Matteo Jorgenson won cycling’s Paris-Nice on Sunday, March 10, as the eight-day event culminated on the Riviera seafront along the iconic walkway the Promenade des Anglais. Jorgenson started the final day of racing around the mountainous Nice backcountry in second behind fellow American Brandon McNulty. McNulty ran out of steam however when Belgian Remco Evenepoel and Jorgenson broke away in the cold and rain on a mountainside he could not follow. The 24-year-old Californian, who lives in Nice, allowed Evenepoel to take the stage win, celebrating the overall title as he crossed the line just behind him. The Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss, the songwriter and perennial Oscar bridesmaid Diane Warren and Matteo Garrone, the director of this year’s best international feature Oscar-nominated Italian film Io Capitano, will all be honored on Sunday night during the opening ceremony of the 19th Los Angeles, Italia Film, Fashion and Art Festival at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatres, exactly one week before the 96th Academy Awards take place just down the street. The festival, which is backed by Italy’s Ministry of Culture, will run through Saturday, March 9, and feature 112 film screenings (47 in movie theaters and 65 on the online platform eventive.org). This year’s edition will be hosted by one Italian screen legend, Franco Nero, and is dedicated to another, the late Marcello Mastroianni, whose centenary it coincides with, as well as the late Italian playwright Eduardo de Filippo.
