“Reaching her expiration date”: How Marjorie Taylor Greene fell so fast from MAGA stardom

“Reaching her expiration date”: How Marjorie Taylor Greene fell so fast from MAGA stardom

Making an Icarus allusion is tempting, except it would go right over MAGA heads. Plus the Greek myth of the ambitious young man who flies too close to the sun and falls to his death is a tragic story. But there was nothing sad about watching Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., faceplant on live TV late Wednesday. Earlier in the day, it seemed that Greene was backing off her ongoing threat to move to oust Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La. Republicans in Congress repeatedly made it clear to Greene that there was no chance of success if she tried this. Not only did most Republicans oppose her efforts, but even most Democrats were ready to block her motion. Even Donald Trump, the not-so-secret actual leader of House Republicans, issued condescending social media posts warning her this “will negatively affect everything!” This was more about Republicans and Democrats joining hands to tell Marjorie Taylor Greene to take a seat already. Faced with certain defeat, Greene made noises on Tuesday suggesting that she was finally backing …

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s fire was suddenly extinguished this week. She has made herself irrelevant

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s fire was suddenly extinguished this week. She has made herself irrelevant

Marjorie Taylor Greene made sure to milk every moment of the six weeks since she filed her motion to vacate. Inexplicably, she regularly paraded around the Hill with her boyfriend — Right Side Broadcasting Network host Brian Glenn — and was often also accompanied by her cueballed press secretary Nick Dyer. When Greene finally actually called for a vote on Wednesday night and a group of centrist Republicans gathered, Glenn and Dyer watched on. Dyer lit a cigarette. Glenn told me he supported his girlfriend “one hundred per cent.” Greene relished the fact that amid multiple important votes in Congress — including lawmakers passing legislation to keep the government open and assisting allies like Ukraine — all of the reporters huddled around her and asked for her thoughts. This happened despite the fact that she never had the votes to depose Mike Johnson. She didn’t really have anything serious to offer him, either. When she finally pulled her motion to vacate on Wednesday, she enraged Republicans and Democrats alike for the simple reason that they …

House votes overwhelmingly to save Speaker Johnson from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s push to oust him

House votes overwhelmingly to save Speaker Johnson from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s push to oust him

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and his allies beat back a dramatic effort by far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to oust him from power on Wednesday, ending — for now — months of threats against his speakership. The lopsided vote to “table” or kill Greene’s motion to vacate the speaker’s chair was 359-43. Just 10 Republicans voted with Greene, seven Democrats voted present. There were 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats who voted to kill Greene’s motion; along with the 11 Republicans, 32 Democrats voted to move forward with her motion to oust Johnson. The vote came after weeks of threats from Greene to force the issue and after dragging her feet as it became clear she didn’t have enough support to remove the speaker. Unlike last year’s successful vote to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., many Democrats had made clear they would vote to save the speaker, especially after Johnson helped stave off a government shutdown, pushed through the renewal of a critical FISA spy tool and passed billions of dollars in foreign aid for Ukraine after months …

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Speaker Johnson continue talks as she threatens his job

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Speaker Johnson continue talks as she threatens his job

WASHINGTON — After a nearly two-hour meeting with Speaker Mike Johnson, far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., emerged from his office and said the two will continue their discussions on Tuesday morning amid her threats to force a vote to depose him. “We’re going to be meeting again tomorrow based on the discussion that we’ve had,” Greene said, standing in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall, though she did not elaborate on what she and the speaker discussed. She would not answer any questions about whether she was backing off forcing a vote on a so-called motion to vacate the speaker’s chair. But the continued talks between Johnson and his loudest critic in Congress suggest that the two could possibly strike a deal to avert a vote on Johnson’s future that would be an embarrassment for the party six months before the November election. The Monday afternoon meeting came at Greene’s request, GOP sources said. She was spotted by reporters walking into the speaker’s office along with Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., one of only two Republicans who …

Distorted gospel: Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jesus and the Jews

Distorted gospel: Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jesus and the Jews

Marjorie Taylor Greene has a lot of big feelings about the Jews. Whenever the Georgia congresswoman opines on the topic, her thoughts are bound to produce some combination of hilarity and concern. Her latest musings on interfaith dialogue, in response to her vote against the Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023, skew much more toward the latter. Greene appears to imagine this act as a threat to religious freedom, and grounds her position in an antisemitic trope that has led to violence against Jews for centuries. H.R. 6090, the “2023 Awareness of Antisemitism Act,” was introduced last October and passed the House by a 320-91 vote on May 1. In an X post shortly before the House vote, Greene stated her intention to vote against it, saying that the bill “could convict Christians for believing the Gospel that says Jesus was handed over to Herod to be crucified by the Jews.” She’s not entirely making this up, since the bill adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which includes “claims of Jews killing Jesus” …

Republicans, Democrats, and Donald Trump Agree on One Thing: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Move to Oust Mike Johnson Is a Dumb Idea

Republicans, Democrats, and Donald Trump Agree on One Thing: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Move to Oust Mike Johnson Is a Dumb Idea

Last month, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s GOP colleagues responded to her calls to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson by saying things like, “Don’t bother us,” and stop “airing your grievances,” and “Nobody cares what Marjorie Taylor Greene says or thinks.” Unfortunately for Greene (or maybe unfortunately for her coworkers), she did not appear to get the message, and rather than moving on, decided on Wednesday to dig in. Speaking to reporters in Washington, the far-right congresswoman announced that she will officially raise a “motion to vacate” Johnson next week, i.e. try to boot him from his leadership position. Claiming Johnson “is not capable” of doing his job, Greene said she was giving Republicans the weekend to “prepare,” adding, “I care about my conference.” It also seems likely she‘s hoping people will change their minds over the next several days, because currently she appears to have little support—on either side of the aisle. As The Washington Post reports, representatives Thomas Massie and Paul Gosar are the only Republicans who’ve publicly backed Greene’s effort to remove Johnson, while …

Marjorie Taylor Greene to force vote on ousting Mike Johnson as speaker | Marjorie Taylor Greene

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on Wednesday that she would move to force a vote next week on removing her fellow Republican Mike Johnson as House speaker, even though the measure appears certain to fail. “I think the American people need to see a recorded vote,” Greene said at a press conference. “And so next week, I am going to be calling this motion to vacate – absolutely calling it. I can’t wait to see Democrats go out and support a Republican speaker and have to go home to their primaries and have to run for Congress again.” The news came one day after House Democratic leaders issued a statement indicating they would vote to table, or kill, Greene’s motion to vacate if it came up for a vote. In the statement, Democratic leaders cited Johnson’s successful effort to shepherd a foreign aid package through the House last month to justify blocking Greene’s motion. “At this moment, upon completion of our national security work, the time has come to turn the page on this chapter …

Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will move next week to try to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson from the job over his reliance on votes from Democrats to pass key legislation, including aid for Ukraine. Greene did not give any further specifics on when she plans to bring up the resolution known as a motion to vacate. Greene started the process for trying to oust Johnson weeks ago and has repeatedly threatened to follow through without actually calling up the measure and forcing a vote. “What are we giving Republican voters to vote for?” Greene asked at a press conference outside of the Capitol on …

Marjorie Taylor Greene speaks on effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson: Watch live

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is slated to deliver remarks Wednesday morning on her effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). Greene vowed yesterday to push ahead with her resolution against Johnson, even after Democratic leaders said they would shield him from a conservative coup — at least until the end of the term. She announced her plan in a post on the social platform X, shortly after the top three Democrats announced they would move to table her motion to vacate if she forced a vote on the floor. The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT. Watch the live video above. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media Inc. All rights reserved. Marjorie Taylor Greene keeps them guessing on Mike Johnson motion to vacate

Marjorie Taylor Greene keeps them guessing on Mike Johnson motion to vacate

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is happy to keep them guessing. The Georgia hard-liner introduced her motion to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in March, framing it as a warning to GOP leaders ahead of explosive debates on government spying and aid to Ukraine. Yet more than a month later, Greene has declined to force a vote on the resolution, even after Johnson helped to usher both of those bills into law over the howls of conservatives in his GOP conference. And on Monday evening — after a weeklong recess during which she escalated her threats against the Speaker — Greene was a no-show at the only House votes of the day, raising only more questions about whether she intends to pull the trigger on her motion to vacate. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), one of just two other supporters of Greene’s vacate motion, said he spoke with Greene about the resolution over the break. But he’s also keeping his cards close to the vest, declining to disclose any details about when — or even if — the …
