Digital magazine ABCs 2024: Half of titles down in past year

Digital magazine ABCs 2024: Half of titles down in past year

Recent magazine covers for BBC Science Focus, Car, Cosmopolitan and New Scientist More than half of digital magazine circulation came via “all you can read” services in 2024, according to the latest ABC figures. ABC-audited magazines had a combined average digital circulation of three million per edition (excluding any copies distributed in bulk for free) – up 14% compared to 2023. Some 1.6 million, or 55%, of the combined 2024 digital magazine circulation came from services like Apple News+, Cafeyn, Kindle Unlimited and Readly. This circulation is defined as a digital copy that a consumer has “purchased and viewed as part of a multi-publication package”. It means publishers do not receive a full subscription price for these sales but instead get a royalty fee based on a Spotify-style model. Apple News+ does not disclose its subscriber numbers but is expected to be by far the biggest such bundle provider. Cafeyn has 2 million users across its main markets in France, Netherlands, UK and Canada while Readly has 427,227 full-paying subscribers and its biggest markets are …

Freezing the moment of art in a tangible printed form while AI is evolving rapidly.” Hamburg-based creative studio, polardots.studio, and Christoph Grünberger – who wrote the book The Age of Data: Embracing Algorithms in Art & Design – were instrumental in getting the project off the ground. “[The magazine] showcases remarkable works and accompanying essays that set the benchmark for today’s AI-generated art, from surprising visual experiments to conceptually refined pieces that push the boundaries of this rapidly evolving field,” the project said in a statement. “The magazine reveals what happens when humans and machines get creative together. Free: 356 Issues of Galaxy, the Groundbreaking 1950s Science Fiction Magazine

Free: 356 Issues of Galaxy, the Groundbreaking 1950s Science Fiction Magazine

Along with Astounding Science Fiction and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Galaxy Magazine was one of the most important science fiction digests in 1950s America. Ray Bradbury wrote for it–including an early version of his masterpiece Fahrenheit 451–as did Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Frederik Pohl, Theodore Sturgeon, Cordwainer Smith, Jack Vance, and numerous others. Now a fairly decent collection of issues (356 in total) is available for your perusal at archive.org for absolutely free. It’s not complete yet, but it’s close. When Galaxy appeared in October 1950, it promised a kind of science fiction different from the space operas of previous decades. As an “annual report” written by publisher H.L. Gold proclaimed, …other publishers thought the idea of offering mature science fiction in an attractive, adult format was downright funny. They knew what sold–shapely female endomorphs with bronze bras, embattled male mesomorphs clad in muscle, and frightful alien monsters in search of a human soul. And while Astounding Science Fiction was focused on technology–suited for an America that had fundamentally changed since …

Time Magazine Owner Blasts Harris For Rejecting Interview Requests

Time Magazine Owner Blasts Harris For Rejecting Interview Requests

Via HeadlineUSA.com, The owner of Time magazine blasted Vice President Kamala Harris for rejecting multiple interview requests from the prominent left-leaning publication ahead of November’s election. Marc Benioff, the billionaire co-founder of Salesforce, bought Time magazine in 2018. He noted that since he’s been in charge of the publication, every presidential candidate has agreed to sit down for interviews during their campaigns, including former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. Harris, however, has rebuffed every one of the magazine’s interview requests. “Despite multiple requests, TIME has not been granted an interview with Kamala Harris — unlike every other Presidential candidate,” Benioff wrote on X. “We believe in transparency and publish each interview in full,” he continued. “Why isn’t the Vice President engaging with the public on the same level? #TrustMatters #TransparencyMatters #Leadership.” Despite multiple requests, TIME has not been granted an interview with Kamala Harris—unlike every other Presidential candidate. We believe in transparency and publish each interview in full. Inside Demna and Balenciaga’s Daring Second Act

Inside Demna and Balenciaga’s Daring Second Act

PARIS It’s early spring in Paris, and Demna, the enigmatic creative director of Balenciaga, leaps up from his chair. He’s in a bright showroom, examining a slouchy model with a mullet. Balenciaga’s winter 2024 runway show is in two days, and Demna has been holed up here for hours making final adjustments to each look that will hit the catwalk. Have you seen any documentaries about couture houses? You’ll find a more dynamic atmosphere in a monastery. But this showroom, stretching out beneath the vaulted ceilings of a former hospital built in the 17th century, looks kind of like an adult slumber party, soundtracked by ear–splitting techno. Following Demna’s lead, nearly every person in the room is wearing designer pajama sweats. I’m asked not to disturb Demna while he’s locked in, so I stand to one side and observe the creative choreography at the center of the most radical $2 billion–plus luxury fashion house in Paris. The collection, I’m told, is deeply personal to Demna, full of flourishes cribbed from his own closet and references …

The Watch World’s New Indie King

The Watch World’s New Indie King

Rexhepi is handsome with a strong jaw, permanent stubble, and boyishly pointed ears. If Hollywood ever catches watch fever and decides to give Rexhepi a biopic, Tom Hardy would fit the bill. He is meticulous about everything, not just watches—even the workbench he uses is of his own design. His desk is stacked with notebooks filled with drawings of watches and mechanisms. He designed the notebooks too. On the day of our meeting, he is wearing a camel-colored knit polo and matching sport coat. He cares so much about his clothes that he’s talked about designing his own one day. On his wrist is the vintage Rolex Milgauss he’s known for, but he tells me he also has several of the brand’s Daytonas at home. The Chronomètre Contemporain II is Rexhepi’s current masterpiece, considered by many to be one of the finest modern watches in the world. Rexhepi’s office is decorated with objects that pass his smell test: samurai swords and a handmade knife from Emmanuel Esposito that clicks into place so smoothly, like those …

Eva Mackevic announced on Linkedin on Monday evening that Reader’s Digest UK has “come to an end” after 86 years. She wrote: “Unfortunately, the company just couldn’t withstand the financial pressures of today’s unforgiving magazine publishing landscape and has ceased to trade.” The Canadian edition of Reader’s Digest similarly shut down at the end of last year blaming “declining ad sales revenues, increased production and delivery costs and changes in consumer reading habits”. The most recent articles on the Reader’s Digest UK online homepage appear to have been published on Wednesday 24 April – six days ago at the time of writing. Thanks for subscribing.
