Drivers on the M4 are facing long delays after authorities shut the major motorway in both directions following a crash this morning. Traffic cameras have captured the full extent of the lingering chaos after the road was originally shuttered at 12.32am this morning. Long queues of standstill traffic have formed between junction 49 Pont Abraham and junction 48 Hendy, Llanelli, in Carmarthenshire.  Traffic Wales, which monitors the main routes in Wales, reported 45 minute delays at 8am, with queues developing on surrounding routes in the area and on the A48. Police officers have criticised a driver who sped up to a staggering 114mph, claiming it was because their crying daughter distracted them. The reckless speeder was so focused on their child, they didn’t even realise they had zoomed past a speed check or that a marked police car was tailing them. Members of Wiltshire Police’s Specialist Operations unit took to X, previously known as Twitter, to share the shocking episode. The high-speed drive happened on the M4 motorway sometime after 8pm on Monday, February 26. Police shared a serious warning in their tweet: “114mph along the M4 because your infant daughter is crying in the back, is the opposite of a good excuse. So distracted, this driver was unaware they’d passed the static speed check; or that they were then followed by a marked vehicle to Membury. #summons #fatalfive.” The cops also shared an image on their tweet – a screenshot from a camera assumedly mounted inside their vehicle. A huge crash on the M4 has closed the motorway as emergency services rush to the scene. The crash, which occured in the area from junction 32 Coryton to junction 33 Capel Llanilltern travelling westbound, is set to cause travel chaos as drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible. Lane two and three are currently closed between junction 32-33 Westbound, South Wales Police confirmed. Lane one remains open. In a tweet, the force said: “We are at the scene of a collision on the M4. The road is currently closed between junction 32-33 westbound. “It is expected to remain closed for some time. “Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. Delays are expected in the area.” In a subsequent update, Traffic Wales announced the road was clear just after 9am. An update from The Welsh Government’s traffic information service read: “J32 Coryton to J33 Capel Llanilltern travelling Westbound – now clear. “All lanes have now reopened.” Source link

A major stretch of the M4 between Berkshire and Wiltshire has been closed throughout the night due to a “serious” “police-led incident”. National Highways revealed the stretch between junction 15, Swindon, and junction 14, Hungerford. The carriageway is closed in both directions. The highways agency said Thames Valley Police was running a “mutli-agency response” to the incident. Although it has not revealed the nature of the closure. A National Highways spokesman said: “At approximately 21:46 last night we were advised of a serious incident resulting in the closure of the M4 in both directions between J15 and J14. “Thames Valley Police are leading a multi agency response to the incident. National Highways resources are providing assistance with traffic management. “Due to the serious nature of the incident the road is expected to remain closed through the morning to facilitate the ongoing police collision investigations.” According to traffic monitoring website INRIX, motorists were turned around at the scene last night.
