Lukashenko’s country sends children removed from Ukraine for training with Belarusian army | World | News

Belarus sent a group of children recently arrived in the country from occupied Ukraine to train with the Belarusian military, the country’s state television said. The training received by the 35 children included how to evacuate a building in the event of a fire, the Belarus1 channel said. The report added the children, coming from the Russian-occupied town of Antratsyt in the Luhansk Oblast, are being taught “how to behave in extreme situations”. Footage shared by the state television channel showed a smoke-filled room and the children holding onto the wall during the evacuation. During the video, the youngsters can be seen wearing a Russian flag sewn onto their sleeves. Taken by Belarusian authorities to the city of Mogilev, the youngsters are reportedly being housed in a sanatorium and cared for by employees at the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Lukashenko’s ‘joke’ about Wagner Group invading Poland highlights regional security fears of rogue mercenaries

Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko reportedly remarked – suppposedly in a joking tone – during a recent meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg that Wagner mercenaries are eager to move into Poland. While Lukashenko may not have been being totally serious about a possible mercenary excursion into Warsaw, the presence of Russian Wagner Group troops in neighbouring Belarus is problematic for a number of reasons. The first issue is that it’s not clear how effectively Belarus will be able to control the Wagner Group. Lukashenko claimed: “The Wagner guys have started to stress us. They want to go west.” While he is reported to have added, “I am keeping them in central Belarus, like we agreed,” it’s clear that having the mercenary troops in Belarus is cause for concern. Research on mercenaries, paramilitaries, private security companies and the like has pointed to some of the negative repercussions of granting violent non-state actors too much power and autonomy in a conflict.
