An Open Letter in Support of Luciano Canfora | Pierre Vesperini

Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has sued Luciano Canfora, an eighty-one-year-old historian, philologist, and professor emeritus at the University of Bari, for aggravated defamation (diffamazione aggravata). The preliminary hearing took place yesterday. The case dates back two years, to when Meloni was an opposition parliamentarian and the leader of the Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) party. Professor Canfora is the acclaimed author of dozens of books and a famous public figure. Former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti takes charge of Italy | Italy

Luciano Spalletti has been appointed as the new head coach of Italy, the country’s football federation has announced. The former Napoli manager replaces Roberto Mancini, who resigned this week. Spalletti, 64, last season led Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years, crowning a long club management career that has included spells at Roma, Inter, and a five-year stint with Russian club Zenit St Petersburg. He opted to leave Naples after his moment of glory. The Italian Football Federation revealed on its website that Spalletti will take up the post from 1 September. Italy are in England’s Euro 2024 qualifying group and visit Wembley on 17 October. They currently sit third in qualifying Group C, behind England and Ukraine. Spalletti will be charged with qualifying his nation for Euro 2024 in Germany, where they will look to defend their crown after winning the Euro 2020 final at England’s expense under Mancini. Napoli in talks with Luis Enrique as they seek Luciano Spalletti successor | Napoli

Napoli are in talks with Luis Enrique as they seek a replacement for Luciano Spalletti, who is standing down as manager after winning Serie A. The former Spain and Barcelona coach is one their leading candidates but Napoli are aware he also features on the shortlists of other clubs, including Tottenham. Spalletti has said he intends to take a sabbatical year after leading Napoli to their first title since 1990. On Monday the club’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, thanked the 64-year-old for his work and described him as “a free man”. Spalletti is due to take charge of Napoli for the final time in Sunday’s home game against Sampdoria, the last match of the season. Luis Enrique has been out of work since he stepped down from the Spain job after their 2022 World Cup last-16 defeat by Morocco. He most recent stint as a club manager was from 2014-17 with Barcelona, where his trophies included two La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey wins and a Champions League.
