Fisker stiffed the engineering firm developing its low-cost EV and pickup truck, lawsuit claims

Fisker stiffed the engineering firm developing its low-cost EV and pickup truck, lawsuit claims

Henrik Fisker stood on a stage last August and proudly debuted two prototypes designed to catapult his eponymous EV startup Fisker into the mainstream. There was the Pear, a low-cost EV meant for the masses, and the Alaska, Fisker’s entry into the red-hot pickup truck market. In the weeks that followed, Fisker stopped paying the engineering firm that helped develop those vehicles, according to a previously unreported lawsuit filed in federal court this week. The firm, a U.S. subsidiary of German engineering giant Bertrandt AG, also accuses Fisker of wrongfully holding onto IP associated with those vehicles. It’s asking for around $13 million in damages. The lawsuit adds to a pile of legal trouble facing Fisker, which is on the brink of bankruptcy. At least 30 lawsuits alleging lemon law violations have been filed, a handful of which Fisker has already settled. A former director has filed a proposed class action suit claiming unpaid wages. A textile supplier has also sued Fisker for more than $1 million that it alleges the EV startup never paid. …

After launching just months ago, the new Volvo EX30 is already living up to its promise of delivering profitable growth. Volvo’s low-cost EX30 is already making an impact “We have had a strong start to the year, with our first quarter results laying a solid foundation for the year ahead,” Volvo CEO Jim Rowan said Wednesday. Volvo set a new global sales record in the first quarter of 2024, fueled by growing demand for its fully electric vehicles. After being one of the first legacy automakers to commit to an all-electric future, the results speak for themselves. In the first quarter, Volvo had a 100% electrified (including PHEVs) sales share in 18 markets, up from 15 in Q4. Fully electric vehicles accounted for over 40% of sales share in 19 markets, up from 13 in Q4. Volvo’s new fully electric small SUV, the EX30, contributed to the sales growth, according to Björn Annwall, Volvo Cars’ chief commercial officer & deputy CEO. Volvo …

Nissan Micra EV to debut this year as new low-cost electric car

Nissan Micra EV to debut this year as new low-cost electric car

Another affordable electric car is set to be unveiled later this year as Nissan looks to boost EV sales. Nissan will unveil a new Micra EV as its newest low-cost electric car. Nissan has been teasing an electric Micra successor for several years now. The new EV was previewed as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Over two years ago, the company claimed, “This all-new model will be designed by Nissan and engineered and manufactured by Renault using our new common platform.” The entry-level EV was part of the Alliance’s plans to invest 23 billion euros ($24.5 billion) over a five-year period to kick off its EV offensive. Nissan unveiled its own business update last month as it looks to cut costs and introduce affordable EVs. Nissan’s new “Arc” business plan aims for “significant next-generation EV cost reduction” through its partnerships and technology. The automaker is preparing to launch five new electric cars soon. In November, Nissan revealed an up to £3bn ($3.8B) investment to build three new EVs at its Sunderland factory, including an electric …

Photoncycle targets low-cost energy storage with a clever hydrogen solution

Photoncycle targets low-cost energy storage with a clever hydrogen solution

For years, the solar energy sector has grappled with interseasonal energy storage. The ability to harness the surplus solar energy of summer months for use during the winter has remained an elusive goal, with existing solutions like batteries falling short due to prohibitive costs and limited lifespans. Hydrogen, meanwhile, despite its clean-burning properties, has been sidelined due to inefficiency and high costs. Photoncycle — a startup emerging from the depths of an accelerator in Oslo Science Park in Oslo, Norway — has been working on a solution. With a vision as bright as the summer sun, the startup claims its solid hydrogen-based technology can store energy more efficiently in an ammonia synthesis reactor. The claim is this tech does the storage more cost-effectively than any battery or liquid hydrogen solution on the market.   A schematic of how Photoncycle envisions its full system when installed at a house. AT&T vs. Xfinity: Customer-Friendly Fiber and Low-Cost Cable

AT&T vs. Xfinity: Customer-Friendly Fiber and Low-Cost Cable

Is AT&T or Xfinity internet better? A case could be made for either provider as the best overall, but given the choice of AT&T Fiber or Xfinity, I would recommend AT&T Fiber. Xfinity has a larger coverage area and lower introductory rates, but AT&T Fiber comes with no data caps, equipment fees, contracts or set price increases. Xfinity, on the other hand, is likely to come with some or all of those conditions depending on where you live and the plan you choose. AT&T and Xfinity are two of the largest internet service providers in the US, so one or both providers may be available at your address. If that’s the case, you’ll have a nice selection of high-speed, high-value plans. The fast speeds, fair pricing, and favorable service terms have earned both providers high customer satisfaction ratings. AT&T and Xfinity finished with above-average ratings among major internet providers in the most recent surveys from the American Customer Satisfaction Index and J.D. Power and Associates. Which of these two ISPs, AT&T or Xfinity best fits …

Lectric CEO answers pressing questions about new low-cost e-bike

Lectric CEO answers pressing questions about new low-cost e-bike

Earlier this week, Phoenix-based e-bike maker Lectric Ebikes surprised the industry with the unveiling of a high-end yet low-cost electric bike. The $1,999 Lectric ONE e-bike, which includes components like a Pinion automatic shifting gearbox normally found on models approaching five figures, resulted in a flood of questions. To get to the bottom of the most pressing concerns, we sat down with Lectric’s CEO Levi Conlow to discuss the decisions made in designing and producing the new e-bike. Question 1: Why does the Lectric ONE use a cadence sensor instead of a torque sensor? When testing the Lectric ONE with both cadence and torque sensors, we didn’t really feel like the torque sensor added very much to the experience, and would end up costing the consumer a lot more. We spent a lot of time dialing in the power delivery on this bike with PWR so that the experience comes shockingly close to the experience with a torque sensor. There are several settings users can adjust to dial in the way power gets delivered on …

Testing out a low-cost full-suspension e-bike

Testing out a low-cost full-suspension e-bike

Full-suspension and fat tires are basically the holy grail of comfort when it comes to e-bikes. They’re excessive in many situations, but that doesn’t stop a large swath of new e-bike shoppers looking for both. The only problem is they both tend to add to the cost of an e-bike, often pushing the number into the $2k range or higher. But what if you could get a full-suspension fat tire electric bike for under a thousand bucks? That’s what the Mukkpet Tank offers, and so I was excited to test it out and see how good it could be. To be fair, the e-bike’s actual MSRP is $1,299, but the sale price of $999 seems to be pretty common so I’m comfortable calling it a sub-$1k bike, at least most of the time. To see how the bike rides, watch my review video below. Or for the readers, keep on scrolling. Or check out both – you do you, my friend! Renault and VW may partner on low-cost BEV minicar

Renault and VW may partner on low-cost BEV minicar

Renault confirmed today that it is in talks with Volkswagen to build a BEV minicar for the European market. The French automaker’s CEO, Luca de Meo, said at the Geneva Motor Show that the company is in “good discussions” with VW, according to a report in Automotive News Europe. He also hinted that other partners were in the running, but didn’t name names: “I am open to anybody who wants to jump in. I have production capacity. I have the platform. I know how to do it.” Last week, news hit that Volkswagen, Renault, and Stellantis were weighing possibly joining together to make cheaper electric vehicles – fearing it’s their only option. The urgency is growing as European automakers are being far outdistanced by BYD and Tesla, the latter of which sells more EVs in Europe than any other brand. 2024 has so far served up a series of obstacles impacting EV sales, and automakers have been left scrambling. Among the issues, some governments have reduced or dropped EV incentives, rental companies are scaling back on …
